About Ballet West From Balanchine to Bournonville, and Petipa to Tharp, Ballet West boasts a rich and varied repertoire, elegant and versatile artists, and an American style and legacy that is as dynamic, expansive, and unexpected as the Rocky Mountain region it represents. Ballet West has toured the world several times over, presenting the very best in American classical ballet.

willam christensen

Ballet West was established in Salt Lake City in 1963. Willam F. Christensen was the company’s first artistic director, co-founding the company together with Utah’s “First Lady of the Arts,” Glenn Walker Wallace. In 1951, Christensen had established the first ballet department in an American university at The University of Utah, and with the tireless assistance of Mrs. Enid Cosgriff, this program grew into the Utah Civic Ballet, Ballet West’s first incarnation. But this was not the first ballet company Willam Christensen founded. Along with his brothers, Lew and Harold, Christensen made history by establishing the oldest ballet company in the western United States, the San Francisco Ballet. There, he went on to create the first full-length American productions of Coppélia, Swan Lake, and his evergreen production of The Nutcracker, which remains in Ballet West’s repertoire to this day. With 38 company members, 16 second company members, and a thriving academy that trains dancers of all ages, many of whom have gone on to professional careers with Ballet West and companies around the world, Ballet West ranks among the top professional ballet companies in America. Since its inception, the Company has had five artistic directors—its founder Willam Christensen, Bruce Marks, John Hart, Jonas Kage, and currently Adam Sklute, each of whom has helped to build Ballet West’s unique and expansive profile. For more than 50 years, Willam Christensen and Ballet West have developed and influenced innumerable great artists in the ballet world. Some notable figures include Bart Cook, Finis Jhung, Jay Jolley, Victoria Morgan, Tomm Ruud, Michael Smuin, Richard Tanner, and Kent Stowell. With an eclectic and ever expanding outlook, Ballet West is truly an American pioneer in the world of dance.

From the Artistic Director Welcome to the 75th Anniversary of Willam Christensen’s renowned and magical ballet, The Nutcracker. On Christmas Eve in 1944, Ballet West’s founder, “Mr. C,” presented the first full-length American production of this holiday treat in San Francisco, thus beginning a national phenomenon. Shortly thereafter, The Nutcracker began to crop up around the country and there are now hundreds of versions performed across America annually by ballet, modern, and even hip-hop companies. Notably, Ballet West continues to perform Mr. C’s version to this day, making it perhaps the longest-running Nutcracker production in the world. So, what is the great appeal of The Nutcracker, particularly here in America? Why is Mr. C’s production so enduring? The Nutcracker first premiered in 1892 in St. Petersburg, Russia, featuring a score by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and choreography by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov. Despite its popularity today, the ballet was not an immediate success. Petipa wrote the libretto himself, which he based on the Alexandre Dumas adaptation of E.T.A. Hoffmann’s story, The Nutcracker and the Mouse King. Critics at the time considered Petipa’s plot to be an over-simplistic rethinking of the cumbersome Hoffmann/Dumas story. Additionally, they did not appreciate the extensive use of children in the leading roles and were bothered by the fact that the principal ballerinas had only short featured opportunities. Tchaikovsky’s score also received mixed reviews initially, but when it was rearranged and shortened to become The Nutcracker Suite, its infinitely hummable music found its way into the hearts of many. Between 1919 and 1934, multiple revisions of The Nutcracker were presented throughout Europe. During this time, the ballet’s lead roles were given to adults so that Clara, her Prince, and others had more extensive dancing opportunities and greater character development. The Nutcracker was first seen in America in 1940, as a one-act, abridged version choreographed by Alexandra Fedorova for the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. An offshoot of Diaghilev’s famed Paris company, the Monte Carlo troupe toured the United States, from large cities to small towns. Their Nutcracker Suite became a popular presentation, as Americans had already become familiar with the ballet’s music. (In 1940, Disney incorporated 20

From the Artistic Director The Nutcracker Suite into a segment of Fantasia, allowing Tchaikovsky’s score to gain household recognition.) In the early 1940’s, Mr. C made history by founding the first devoted ballet company in America – the San Francisco Ballet. (Prior to that, ballet in the United States was seen only as a “side-show,” and often connected to opera companies.) Mr. C presented America’s first productions of Swan Lake (1939) and Coppélia (1940) before beginning work on America’s first full-length production of The Nutcracker. Mr. C likely had seen the abridged production by the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo; in fact, that company’s leading ballerina and main choreographer at the time were none other than Alexandra Danilova and George Balanchine, respectively. As children, both had been a part of the full-length Nutcracker back in St. Petersburg, Russia. Now, decades later, the two Ballet Russe alumni advised Mr. C on details about the story, the breakdown of scenes, casting, and more. As the legend goes, on one such visit, the three had been talking into all hours of the night when the ever-elegant Danilova kicked off her shoes to show Mr. C some steps. However, Balanchine intervened, saying, “Oh, no, Choura [the traditional Russian diminutive for Alexandra], he must find his own way.” ...And find his way he did. Taking what he had learned from Balanchine and Danilova, along with his own research, vision, and ingenuity, Mr. C created a Nutcracker that is both faithful to the original concept and lively in a uniquely American way. First, Mr. C gave back all the leading roles to children. Perhaps this was out of practical need – amidst World War II, he may not have had enough trained adult dancers to fill the multitude of roles originally created for children. However, by reinstating so many children into the production, he brilliantly created not just a charming family show but also a built-in audience for it, as parents, grandparents, siblings, and whole families would come to see their relative perform on a major stage in a professional production. Mr. C, along with his brothers and their wives, began his career in Vaudeville and he therefore understood how the second act of The Nutcracker, with its series of vignettes, or divertissements, could also play like a Vaudeville show. He insisted that the battle scene in the first act be funny, almost like a cartoon, and he kept the proceedings throughout moving along. This, in my opinion, is part of the ballet’s appeal. (Continued on page 64) Since 2007, Adam Sklute has expanded Ballet West’s outlook, repertoire, and visibility with exciting Company and world premieres, increased touring, heightened public exposure, and greater focus on the Ballet West Academy. He began his career with The Joffrey Ballet, rising through the ranks from dancer to Associate Director. His stewardship of Ballet West has been marked by both financial growth and elevated artistry, and was the subject of The CW Network’s docu-drama, Breaking Pointe, which aired for two seasons. From September 2016 to October 2017, Sklute took on the dual position of CEO and Artistic Director overseeing both administrative and artistic operations of Ballet West. An internationally sought after teacher and adjudicator, Sklute has received numerous awards, including Utah’s Enlightened 50 (2014), The Bronze Minuteman Award for Outstanding Service to Utah and The Nation (2015), and most recently Utah Diversity Connection’s Business Award for outstanding commitment to diversity initiatives.

THE NUTCRACKER 19–20 SEASON

21

From the Executive Director Welcome to America’s First Nutcracker! Seventy-five years after its historic premiere at the War Memorial Opera House in San Francisco, this production continues to be as magical and engaging as it was when our beloved founder, Mr. C, choreographed it on his first company, the San Francisco Ballet. Following a complete makeover three years ago, the production shines like never before with new sets, costumes, and dazzling special effects. It continues to have Mr. C’s fingerprint with his iconic and critically acclaimed choreography. This $3-million renovation was the reason The Nutcracker was invited to return to the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts last year, where it was greeted with sold-out performances and rave reviews from The Washington Post. The milestone anniversary of America’s first Nutcracker was the driving force behind BYUtv’s embracing the concept of a film to share this important story with audiences around the world. From those first conversations, this has become a pet project I have both chaperoned and championed for the past year. On the artistic side, Adam oversaw the camera work, editing, and recording of the Ballet West Orchestra, with music director Jared Oaks conducting. Simultaneously, the administrative team secured the rights from the dancers, musicians, designers, and production personal, while also working with Chief Development Officer Sarah West to secure funding. Filming took place last February during our run of Swan Lake at the Capitol Theatre, a logistical feat of herculean proportions that required moving one production out while moving another in. In the end, I am proud of this presentation. It will be the first national broadcast of a Ballet West production since PBS filmed and broadcast The Nutcracker in the late 1970’s! With BYUtv’s 60-million worldwide viewers, Ballet West’s Nutcracker will once again have an international audience. Michael Scolamiero joined Ballet West in 2017 after an extensive international search led by Michael Kaiser, President Emeritus of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Mr. Scolamiero previously served as Executive Director of Miami City Ballet for three years, during which time the organization achieved a significant reduction in debt, as well as robust growth in ticket revenue, contributions, and touring income. Prior to Miami City Ballet, Mr. Scolamiero was Pennsylvania Ballet’s Executive Director for 17 years, the longest tenure in the Company’s history and among the longest of any leader of a major ballet company. During his tenure, Mr. Scolamiero led the organization’s first capital campaign that raised $11.9 million (against a $10 million goal) to build an endowment and fund repertoire expansion. At Ballet West, Mr. Scolamiero is set to implement a newly completed strategic plan and excited to guide a growing and robust Company.

22

From the Executive Director Throughout December, there will be several opportunities to watch the production, which will be accompanied by a supplemental feature, Willam Christensen’s The Nutcracker: A 75th Anniversary Celebration, an immersive, comprehensive documentary. (Check your listings for both broadcasts.) Ballet West fans will be especially excited to know the digital version will be available to stream in high definition, free of charge, on BYUtv’s app, or on their website, byutv.org. Thank you for coming to Mr. C’s Nutcracker, thank you for your support of the arts. While this production is a spectacle and crown jewel for Ballet West, I hope you will consider returning for Giselle this February, and even more adventurous programming like our Choreographic Festival in May. Ballet West’s programming represents the diversity of our state--always majestic and beautiful. Sincerely,

Michael Scolamiero

THE STORY THE NUTCRACKER begins at the Stahlbaum home on Christmas Eve. Mr. and Mrs. Stahlbaum and their children, Clara and Fritz, are busy preparing for the evening festivities. The guests arrive, including Clara’s Godfather, Dr. Drosselmeyer. Dr. Drosselmeyer has fashioned a special gift for Clara, a Nutcracker designed in the form of a small soldier. Clara falls in love with her Nutcracker at once. That night, Clara is unable to sleep without one more look at her beloved Nutcracker. She tiptoes back into the living room and cradles it once more before falling asleep. She is not sure if she is dreaming or not, but before her eyes are huge mice playing in front of the Christmas tree that has grown to a tremendous size. The Nutcracker fights with the Mouse King and, in the heat of the battle, Clara takes off her slipper and throws it at the Mouse King. While he is distracted, the Nutcracker stabs him with his saber. After the battle, the Nutcracker is magically transformed into a handsome prince and, grateful to Clara for saving his life, invites her to accompany him on a journey to the fabled Kingdom of the Sugar Plum Fairy. En route, they pass through the exquisite land of the Snow Queen and King. Act II begins in the land of the Sugar Plum Fairy, where Clara is entertained by an array of divertissements, including Spanish, Arabian, and Chinese dancers, as well as Mother Buffoon, with her many children who appear from under her gigantic skirt. The evening concludes with the grand pas de deux performed by the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier. Following the pas de deux, Clara is whisked away with her prince in a sleigh, while waving goodbye to the Sugar Plum Fairy and her magical kingdom.

Profiles Willam F. Christensen Choreographer, The Nutcracker

Recognized as one of the leading pioneers in American dance, Willam Christensen, known affectionately as “Mr. C,” played a key role in the artistic contributions to Utah and to the United States. Along with brothers Lew and Harold, Willam began his career with dance lessons from his uncle at the Christensen Academy in Brigham City, Utah. Together the brothers went on to a professional career in vaudeville, and then in 1937, established the oldest ballet company in the United States, the San Francisco Ballet. While with the San Francisco Ballet, Mr. C choreographed the first fulllength version of The Nutcracker ever performed in the United States. Christensen moved his family to Utah to nurse his wife’s ill health. In 1951, he founded the first ballet department at an American university, the University of Utah. Shortly thereafter, in 1953, he formed the University Ballet Theatre, the first ballet company ever incorporated into a university. Mr. C’s contributions to dance also include producing the first full-length version of Coppélia ever to be mounted by an American choreographer and producing the first full-length Swan Lake in the United States. In addition, Mr. C produced the first American Cinderella and his version of Stravinsky’s The Firebird. In 1963, Willam Christensen, in conjuction with Glenn Walker Wallace, founded Ballet West under the name Utah Civic Ballet. Willam served as Artistic Director for Ballet West, and, both under and following his direction, Ballet West has grown to become one of America’s leading ballet companies. After retiring as Artistic Director in 1978, Mr. C founded the Christensen Academy and continued teaching well into his 90’s. He served as special artistic advisor for Ballet West’s annual performances of The Nutcracker up until his death on October 14, 2001. Reporting on his death at the age of 99, the San Francisco Chronicle called him “the grandfather of American ballet.”

Profiles Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky Composer, The Nutcracker

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) studied at the Conservatory in St. Petersburg, where George Balanchine later studied piano in addition to his studies in dance. Tchaikovsky is one of the most popular and influential of all romantic composers. His work is expressive, melodic, and grand in scale, with rich orchestrations. His output was prodigious and included chamber works, symphonies, and concerti for various instruments, as well as operas and works for the piano. His creations for ballet, composed in close partnership with Marius Petipa, include Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, and The Sleeping Beauty.

From the Artistic Director (Continued from page 21) The Nutcracker became the perfect vehicle for introducing a wider American audience to the art form of ballet. George Balanchine choreographed his own version in 1954 and, by the late 1960’s, The Nutcracker had become the literal bread and butter for most companies. Some choreographers chose to have the leading roles played by adults, for a deeper, darker psychological exploration of the story, but most chose to go in the direction of Mr. C’s model for pure family entertainment. In the early 1950’s, Mr. C first presented his Nutcracker in Salt Lake City, with the Utah Civic Ballet (which would later become Ballet West). As a true testament to its popularity, the production has enjoyed an uninterrupted run ever since. While Mr. C himself tinkered with his original work over the years, changing sets and costumes four times and even authorizing his successors to modify aspects of the choreography, he never lost sight of what made his ballet magical. Now, on The Nutcracker’s 75th Anniversary, we honor Mr. C and his pioneering efforts to build a charming and uniquely American vision of classical ballet. We wish you the happiest of holidays.
