From the Executive Director

Dear Ballet West Family,

This spring, with flowers blooming, skies clearing, and people returning to live venues, it seems like an appropriate time for optimism. We have weathered a year that was unpredictable for most and difficult for too many. As we enter the Janet Quinney Lawson Capitol Theatre, I find myself filled with hope and joy. Personally, I have been in awe of our community in the last year. We have experienced an earthquake, inland hurricane, and of course, the pandemic. Through it all, we cared for our neighbors, heeded local mandates, and are emerging buoyant.

The performing arts around the country have also suffered and Ballet West has faced uncertainty, but thanks to the generosity of our community, we are navigating the rough waters. In November, faced with the cancellation of the 65th annual Nutcracker production, KSL-TV promptly stepped in. Not only did they offer the company free airtime with no commercials, they broadcasted The Nutcracker three times--extraordinary! KSL-TV also allowed Ballet West to embed appeals into the ‘intermission’ of the broadcast and I am happy to report that our community heard our pleas and responded with a wonderful outpouring of support for the company. City and county officials have also been remarkably helpful, keeping us informed at every step, relaying directives, providing urgently needed financial support, and working with us to reopen safely. Moreover, the federal government has provided grants to help minimize personnel reductions. While our online content and KSL-TV broadcast of The Nutcracker were very successful, I think most would agree that ballet is best viewed live. Ballet is both ephemeral and ethereal. There is no substitute for being in the theatre and witnessing the athleticism of our amazing dancers in person, and among audiences who share the electricity that only

comes from live performances. That is why I’m happy to welcome you back to our home. I hope you enjoy these Precious Gems! Sincerely,

Michael Scolamiero Executive Director

Michael Scolamiero joined Ballet West in 2017 after an extensive international search led by Michael Kaiser, President Emeritus of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Mr. Scolamiero previously served as Executive Director of Miami City Ballet for three years, during which time the organization achieved a significant reduction in debt, as well as robust growth in ticket revenue, contributions, and touring income. Prior to Miami City Ballet, Mr. Scolamiero was Pennsylvania Ballet’s Executive Director for 17 years, the longest tenure in the Company’s history and among the longest of any leader of a major ballet company. During his tenure, Mr. Scolamiero led the organization’s first capital campaign that raised $11.9 million (against a $10 million goal) to build an endowment and fund repertoire expansion. At Ballet West, Mr. Scolamiero is set to implement a newly completed strategic plan and excited to guide a growing and robust Company.
