F ROM T H E A RT I S T IC DI R E CTOR Good Evening and Welcome to Romeo and Juliet. In 1935, Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev completed his score for the ballet Romeo and Juliet. It was originally composed for The Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow but indefinitely postponed because of the controversy over the newly formed Soviet Committee on Arts Affairs’ mandate that the ballet have a happy ending. Meanwhile, the orchestral music was already being well received and recorded around the world. By the time the official ballet production premiered in Brno, Czechoslovakia in late 1938 with Shakespeare’s intended tragic ending, the ballet’s success could not be denied. Finally, In 1940 The Bolshoi produced Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet as originally intended with choreography by Leonid Lavrovsky. On December 2nd 1962, John Cranko, Artistic Director of The Stuttgart Ballet, presented a new version of Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet and it was met with instant and rapturous acclaim. It is to date still considered by many to be the best. It quickly became a benchmark for all productions created since -- including the widely admired version by Sir Kenneth McMillan created for the Royal Ballet in 1965 and Michael Smuin’s wonderfully theatrical production designed for San Francisco Ballet in 1977 and performed by Ballet West throughout the 1980’s and early 90’s. I first became associated with Cranko’s magnificent production in 1984 when I was a young dancer with The Joffrey Ballet. I found depth and profundity in every level of Cranko’s approach, and the experience left an indelible impression on me – one that has colored my entire vision of ballet and theater ever since. Indeed Cranko’s brand of storytelling has helped to illuminate how I approach my own productions of the classics. So what is it about Cranko’s version that strikes such a deep note? The ballet unfolds moment to moment in a fresh and spontaneous way. Cranko has a masterful understanding of Shakespeare’s play and is able to adapt it into dance with clearly drawn and vivid

He has a specific and dynamic musicality, and an astounding choreographic diversity (especially apparent in his pas de deux and ensemble work), that make up his unique style. Cranko wanted dance to be a “representation of life itself” as he put it, so every aspect of life is delved into, creating moments of broad theatricality that have an instant effect on our senses and moments that are so subtle they last in our memory forever. Cranko brings to life every character on the stage. In his work there are no small parts – everyone is a unique and vital part of the whole. John Cranko died in 1973 – tragically and much too young – on a transatlantic flight back from a triumphant run of performances in the United States where he and his Stuttgart Ballet had been named “the Stuttgart Miracle”. But he left a wealth of brilliant choreography and a legacy that has touched all of us in the dance world forever. And much like Shakespeare’s star-crossed lovers, his story and art never cease to fascinate. F ROM TH E E X ECU TI V E DIR ECTOR There is no greater example of the timeless feeling of falling in love than William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, written in the 1590’s and based on a fairytale told a century before that. Romeo and Juliet share a love that–at its purest level—is no different than the heartache and joy we all experience early in our life. This particular story has been updated numerous times for stage, film, opera, television, and yes, ballet. And, of any of Shakespeare’s resplendent works, Romeo and Juliet begs to be adapted for ballet. No other art form can convey the universal feelings of the human condition – full of beauty and bitterness—like ballet. No matter the language you speak, what country you come from, Romeo and Juliet, danced by Ballet West will transport your soul. I suspect the timelessness of themes and stories are what keeps many of our patrons returning. Whether it be the current production, or The Nutcracker, Swan Lake, or even Almost Tango, ballet has an immortal soul. Our just announced 2016-17 Season will be no different. Full of drama as well as a bit of frivolity, the year holds something for everyone. From the searing drama of Madame Butterfly to the triumph of good over evil in the enduring The Sleeping Beauty. And in the middle of the season, a very special farewell to our current production of The Nutcracker. Thanks to a generous gift from The George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation, The Nutcracker will receive a much-deserved facelift with fantastical sets, props, costumes, and special effects, while entirely maintaining the magical and historic choreography of Ballet West’s founder, Willam Christensen, along with Tchaikovsky’s famous score. You won’t want to miss the final season of the current production of The Nutcracker. While the stories we tell are timeless, ballet is ephemeral; it lasts mere moments on stage, but those memories can leap through our minds for a lifetime. It is with gratitude to our patrons and donors for your generosity that allow our art form to be eternal, both on stage and in our hearts. To you devoted fans, the balletomanes, and aficionados, we sincerely thank you. It is only fitting to be writing this before Valentine’s Day, a day celebrated around the world. Young or old, wealthy or poor, Valentine’s Day holds promise that the tide will turn, that our fortunes in love and friendship will swell and blossom. T H E S TO RY ACT I
Scene One: The Market Place As day breaks, Romeo, son of Montague, is found declaring his love to the fair Rosaline. With the sunrise the market place fills with townspeople among whom are members of two rival families, the Capulets and the Montagues. Tempers flare and a quarrel develops. The Duke of Verona appears and warns the two factions that death will be the ultimate punishment if the feud does not stop. Romeo and his friends, Benvolio and Mercutio, make reluctant peace with Tybalt, a kinsman of the Capulets. Scene Two: Juliet’s ante-room in the Capulets’ house Juliet receives her first ball dress from her mother, Lady Capulet, and learns that she is to meet the nobleman Paris to whom she will be betrothed on the following day. Now she must bid farewell to her childhood. Scene Three: Outside the Capulets’ house Guests appear for the Capulets’ ball, among them Rosaline. Romeo and his friends, masked, follow her to the ball. Scene Four: The Ballroom Juliet is introduced to the guests and to Paris. While dancing with Paris, she and Romeo behold one another. It is love at first sight. Tybalt, suspecting Romeo’s identity, tries to incite a quarrel, but is prevented by Juliet’s father who abides by the laws of hospitality. Scene Five: Juliet’s balcony On the balcony outside her bedroom Juliet dreams of Romeo. He appears below in the garden. They declare their eternal love. ACT II
Scene One - The Market Place A carnival is in progress in the town square. Romeo, daydreaming, is indifferent to the gaiety around him. Juliet’s nurse brings him a letter from Juliet asking him to meet her in the chapel of Friar Laurence. Scene Two - The Chapel In his cloister, Friar Laurence joins the young lovers in marriage. Scene Three - The Market Place At the height of the carnival, Romeo returns to the square. Tybalt accosts him, but Romeo declines to fight. Scene One: The Bedroom In Juliet’s bedroom the lovers are awakened by the sunrise, and Romeo, who has been exiled, must leave Juliet and Verona. Lord and Lady Capulet enter with Paris, but Juliet rejects him. Scene Two: The Chapel Juliet, appealing for help to Friar Laurence, receives a potion from him that will place her in a death-like sleep. He explains that Romeo will find her in the family tomb and from there they can escape together. Scene Three: The Bedroom Juliet’s parents return and Juliet agrees to the marriage with Paris. Left alone, Juliet takes the sleeping potion and is thought to be dead when her family and friends discover her. Scene Four: The Capulet family crypt Romeo, who has not received Friar Laurence’s message revealing the plan, believes Juliet to be dead and rushes to her tomb. There he finds the mourning Paris and kills him. Embracing Juliet for the last time, he plunges his dagger into his heart. Juliet awakens to find Romeo dead. Griefstricken, she kills herself.

Adam Sklute ARTISTIC DIRECTOR, BALLET WEST & BALLET WEST ACADEMY
Since 2007, Adam Sklute has expanded Ballet West’s repertoire, visibility, and overall outlook with exciting Company premieres, increased touring and public exposure, and greater focus on Ballet West Academy and Ballet West II. Under Sklute’s leadership Ballet West has toured extensively, appearing three times at Washington DC’s Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts to sold out audiences; a weeklong engagement at New York City’s Joyce Theater; Chicago’s Auditorium Theater with two separate programs; twice at New York City Center’s Fall for Dance Festival; and twice at the Chicago Dancing Festival. The Company has also appeared at Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts, The Laguna Dance Festival, Aspen, CO, Dallas, TX, twice in Las Vegas, NV, Minneapolis, MN, and Victoria, BC. In 2009, Ballet West graced the cover of Dance Magazine for the first time in 25 years and again was on the cover in 2013. Under Sklute, the Company has garnered numerous reviews and articles in such publications as The New York Times, The Washington Post, Dance Magazine, Ballet Review, and Pointe to name a few. Ballet West was the subject of the BBC Worldwide Production’s docu-drama television series Breaking Pointe which aired for two seasons on The CW channel. Sklute has introduced Ballet West audiences to such renowned contemporary choreographers as Nicolo Fonte, Jiri Kylián, Mark Morris, and Twyla Tharp, among others, all while expanding the company’s Balanchine repertoire and adding early 20th century Diaghilev-era masterpieces. In addition to reintroducing lost elements of Christensen’s production of The Nutcracker and reconstructing his The Firebird, Sklute conceived and produced his own new versions of Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty and Giselle. Sklute has created wildly successful annual programmatic additions to the Season, including a Family Series and Innovations programs. All in all, in his eight years as Artistic Director, Sklute has introduced over thirty new works and nearly forty world premieres to Ballet West. A native of Berkeley, California, Sklute began dancing at the age of 16. His early training was at the Oakland Ballet and San Francisco Ballet schools. After only two years of formal study Sklute became one of the last two artists personally chosen by Robert Joffrey for The Joffrey Ballet. He danced with The Joffrey from 1985 to 2000 and then rose through the ranks to Associate Director in 2005. He became Artistic Director for Ballet West in 2007. Sklute has served on the boards of Chicago’s Dance for Life, Salt Lake Community College, School of the Arts Advisory Board; and the Salt Lake County Cultural Facilities Master Plan Advisory Board. He currently serves on the Board of the Gerald Arpino/Robert Joffrey Foundation. A finalist judge and international representative for numerous ballet competitions including the Youth America Grand Prix, Los Angeles’ Spotlight Awards, The International Ballet Competition, The Japan Grand Prix, and an adjudicator for the American College Dance Festival Association, Sklute was listed as one of the 25 Movers and Shakers of the Utah Arts Scene in 2007. In 2014 he was named one of Utah’s Enlightened 50 and he received the Utah National Guard’s Bronze Minuteman Award for outstanding service to Utah and the nation.

Scott Altman BALLET WEST EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR THE ELIZABETH SOLOMON EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR CHAIR
Scott Altman joined Ballet West as Executive Director in 2013, bringing with him nearly three decades of experience in nonprofit administration and performing arts. A respected industry leader, Altman has worked most of his career to advance the arts through entrepreneurial growth, fiscal sustainability, and by maximizing organizational achievements. Under Altman’s skilled leadership, Ballet West has experienced phenomenal expansion. With a concentrated focus on Ballet West Academy, the attendance of the school has grown 75 percent. The physical footprint has also increased significantly, with a new satellite location in Lehi, Utah at Thanksgiving Point, which opened in August, 2014. The Company is witnessing a true renaissance, unique for an organization in its 52nd year. In the last two years, under Altman, Ballet West has witnessed a 21 percent growth in ticket sales, vastly expanded touring schedule, robust growth in donor development, and a renewed and energized Board of Directors. In that time, Altman has been a guardian of the fiscal health of the organization, balancing the operational budget while establishing a robust cash reserve. Most recently, he facilitated a watershed campaign, the 12-month long “Million Dollar Challenge,” which completely eliminated $2.2 million in operational debt; the first time the Company had achieved the eradication of operational debt in 33 years. Upon his arrival at Ballet West, Altman helped negotiate financing and oversaw the construction of the Jessie Eccles Quinney Ballet Centre, which was completed in December of 2014. This beautiful new 55,000 square foot home for Ballet West, which is LEED-certified, provides space for studios, costume and administrative space, and is a beacon to the arts community in Utah, and beyond. Previous to Ballet West, Altman was the General Director of Phoenix-based Arizona Opera where, under his leadership, the company experienced unprecedented patron and audience development, and achieved financial stability by launching – and completing – an $8.5 million capital campaign. Altman also oversaw the design and construction of a spectacular new Opera Center in central Phoenix, which incorporated administrative, performance, production, education, and community space. Recently, Altman attended Stanford University’s Executive Program for Nonprofit Leaders, an elite certificate program for nonprofit administrators. Altman is also the recipient of the New Jersey State Council on the Arts Citation of Excellence Awards for 2007, 2008, and 2009. Professional activities include, among many others, serving as Regional and District Adjudicator for the Metropolitan Opera National Council, Altman has embedded himself in the community, and is a member of the Salt Lake Rotary, Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce, Utah Nonprofits Association, and is a founder of the Ballet West Ballers, the official softball team of the Company. Prior to his roles in administration, Altman had a successful 20-year career as a professional singer and performed 37 opera roles internationally. Along his path to administration, he was also an adjunct professor of opera at Princeton University. Altman completed his Masters of Music degree at Manhattan School of Music in New York after receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the State University College at Purchase in Purchase, New York. He lives in Salt Lake with his wife and two sons.

A RT I S T IC S TA F F Pamela Robinson Harris PRINCIPAL BALLET MISTRESS /CHOREOGRAPHER
Pamela Robinson Harris has served as Ballet Mistress for Ballet West for over 15 years as well as the Company’s Interim Artistic Director from 2006-2007. Her career began with the Cleveland Ballet, followed by the State of Alabama Ballet in 1982 and Ballet Mississippi in 1984. Pamela joined Ballet West in 1985, advancing to Principal in 1988. During her career, Pamela performed in some of the most prestigious theatres in America, performing principal roles in most major classical works, including those of George Balanchine, Val Caniparoli, Sir Frederick Ashton, and Ben Stevenson. Pamela, together with Associate Director of Ballet West II, Peggy Dolkas, co-choreographed two ballets for Ballet West’s Family Series – The Little Mermaid and Aladdin. She also reworked major sections of Ballet West’s productions of The Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake, and has choreographed for Ballet West II and the Ballet West Academy Professional Trainee Division.
Jane Victorine Wood BALLET MISTRESS
Born in Washington, D.C., Jane received her early training at the Washington School of Ballet. At 15, she was invited to perform with the Grand Theatre de Genève in Switzerland. Jane joined Ballet West in 1979, rising to the rank of Principal Dancer, performing the title roles in Romeo and Juliet, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, Giselle, Swan Lake, Coppelia, and Lady of the Camelias, as well as a full range of contemporary ballets created by world-renowned choreographers. She holds a B.F.A. in ballet from the University of Utah and has taught at Florida State University. Jane joined the Ballet West Artistic Staff in 2011.
Bruce Caldwell BALLET MASTER/COMPANY ARCHIVIST
Bruce Caldwell began his ballet career in 1961 in the children’s roles of Willam Christensen’s The Nutcracker. He joined Ballet West as an apprentice in 1968 and rose through the ranks to become a Principal in 1972, a position he held for 18 years before joining the artistic staff in 1990. In 1989 he received the Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce Excellence in the Arts Award, and a year later, the Governor’s Award, presented by the Utah Arts Council. Caldwell was appointed to his present position of Ballet Master in 1997 and assumed the additional role of Company Archivist in 2007.

A R T I S T I C S TA F F Heather Thackeray ASSISTANT TO THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
Prior to her appointment as Assistant to the Artistic Director, Adam Sklute, Heather enjoyed a 20-year career as a dancer with Ballet West. A Utah native, Heather began taking ballet and tap lessons from her mother at age 3. She continued her studies at the Ballet West Conservatory and joined Ballet West in 1991. Her performance highlights include Ceres in Michael Smuin’s The Tempest, Songbird Fairy in The Sleeping Beauty, Spring Fairy in Ben Stevenson’s Cinderella, Suzuki in Stanton Welch’s Madame Butterfly, and the Doll and Lead Mirliton in Willam Christensen’s The Nutcracker. Heather holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from The University of Utah. She is a well respected teacher, assisting in company rehearsals and overseeing the children’s roles in Ballet West productions.
Calvin Kitten DIRECTOR OF BALLET WEST II
Calvin Kitten began his dance training at the California Ballet School in San Diego, and continued training at the State Ballet School in Tbilisi, Republic of Georgia and also at the Joffrey Ballet School in New York. Calvin joined the Joffrey Ballet in 1991. During his 19 years with The Joffrey, Calvin performed many principal and soloist roles while touring the United States and internationally. Calvin has received two Ruth Page Awards, has been featured on the cover of Dance Magazine, and has appeared in numerous films. In 2010, Calvin joined the teaching faculty of the University of Utah’s Ballet Department. Calvin joined the Ballet West staff as Director of Ballet West II in 2015.
Peggy Dolkas ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF BALLET WEST II
Ms. Dolkas trained under Sheila Humphreys and graduated from the National Ballet School in Toronto, Canada, earning the Peter Dwyer Scholarship award and the Christopher Ondaatjie Ballet Prize. She joined Ballet West in 2003 under the direction of Jonas Kage and was promoted to Soloist in 2005. Ms. Dolkas’ principal roles include Aurora, Giselle, Odette/Odile, and Juliet. Dolkas was Ballet Mistress for Nevada Ballet Theatre from 2013 to 2015. She co-choreographed The Little Mermaid (2012), and Aladdin (2013) with Pamela Robinson-Harris for Ballet West’s Family Series, and Beauty and the Beast will premiere in March of 2016. Peggy joined Ballet West Artistic Staff in July of 2015.

A Salt Lake City native, Cati began her professional career with Ballet West. At the age of 15, she performed The Sleeping Beauty at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. and then continued dancing professionally with the company, later attending BYU and then pursuing a professional ballet and theater career. Since 2008, Cati has been the Ballet West Children’s Ballet Mistress and a principal teacher for the Ballet West Academy. She is also an adjunct professor at The University of Utah, a choreographer and producer for NFL, NHL and NCAA halftime entertainment, producer for various awards shows and has received an Emmy for her choreographic achievements.

David Heuvel has been associated with Ballet West since 1979. Apart from his work for Ballet West, he has designed and built costumes nationally and internationally, including Ballet Du Nord (France), Singapore Ballet, Washington Ballet, Carolina Ballet, North Carolina School of the Arts, Atlanta Ballet and Richmond Ballet.

M U S IC S TA F F Tara Simoncic MUSIC DIRECTOR, PRINCIPAL CONDUCTOR
Tara Simoncic is thrilled to start the 2015-16 Season as the new Music Director of Ballet West. Having collaborated with Ballet West since 2012 on productions of Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, The Rite of Spring, Bolero, and The Lottery, Ms. Simoncic has enjoyed a long standing relationship with the company and is excited to continue that relationship as Music Director. Equally at home with all genres, Ms. Simoncic recently conducted performances of Don Giovanni in Trieste at the Piccolo Festival del Friuli Venezia Giulia (Italy), The Barber of Seville with Slovenian National Opera Ballet Theatre (Maribor), and a symphonic concert at the International Music Festival in Maribor, Slovenia. She has worked with the American Ballet Theatre, Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet, Rioult Dance Theatre Company, the Martha Graham Dance Company, the Chuvash State Opera Ballet Theatre (Russia), and the Slovenia National Opera Ballet Theatre. Ms. Simoncic is a frequent guest conductor with the Louisville Ballet. Ms. Simoncic holds the post of Conductor for the Greenwich Symphony’s Young People’s Concerts Series (Connecticut) and Conductor of the Flexible Orchestra, a contemporary music ensemble based in New York City where she is able to champion new works specifically written for the ensemble each season. She earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Trumpet Performance from the New England Conservatory, a Master of Music degree in Orchestral Conducting from Northwestern University, and received a full scholarship to study at the Manhattan School of Music where she holds a Professional Studies Diploma in Orchestral Conducting.
Jared Oaks ASSOCIATE MUSIC DIRECTOR, PRINCIPAL PIANIST
Jared Oaks, a native of Tacoma, Washington, is Associate Music Director of Ballet West. Since joining the company in 2008, Jared has conducted numerous performances at the Capitol Theatre and Kingsbury Hall in Salt Lake City, the Kennedy Center, and Chicago's Auditorium Theatre. Beyond his active conducting and rehearsal schedule, Jared has played for ballet classes at the Royal Danish Ballet, Balettakademian Stockholm, the Pacific Northwest Ballet Summer Intensive, the University of Utah, Regional Dance America, Burklyn Ballet Theatre, and the Barlow Arts Conservatory. Jared holds degrees in piano performance and choral conducting from Brigham Young University. In addition to conducting studies with Ballet West Music Director Emeritus Terence Kern, his chief teachers and mentors include Richard Anderson, Ronald Staheli, Rosalind Hall, Duane Hulbert, and Marjorie Skreen-Dickerson. Jared is a composer and avid researcher, particularly engaged in Scandinavian and Utah music history.

CHOREOGRAPHER John Cranko CHOREOGRAPHER, ROMEO AND JULIET
John Cranko was born on August 15, 1927 in Rustenburg, South Africa. He received his dance education mainly at the University of Cape Town, where he also choreographed his first ballet to Stravinsky’s Suite from The Soldier’s Tale. In 1946, he continued his studies at the Sadler’s Wells School in London and shortly afterwards became a member of the Sadler’s Wells Ballet (subsequently The Royal Ballet). In 1947, Cranko made a sensational choreography to Debussy’s Children’s Corner for the Sadler’s Wells Ballet; from 1949 on he devoted himself exclusively to choreography, producing extremely successful ballets - mostly for the Sadler’s Wells Ballet. In 1955, he choreographed La Belle Hélène for the Paris Opera Ballet and in 1957 he created his first full-length ballet, The Prince of the Pagodas, for The Royal Ballet. In 1961, John Cranko was appointed ballet director in Stuttgart by Walter Erich Schaefer, the General Director of the Wuerttemberg State Theatre (today’s Stuttgart State Theater). At the beginning of his time in Stuttgart, Cranko created short ballets and gathered together a group of dancers, among whom were Egon Madsen, Richard Cragun, Birgit Keil and, most importantly, a young Brazilian dancer named Marcia Haydée who was to become his prime muse and inspiration. The breakthrough for Cranko came in December 1962 with the world premiere of Romeo and Juliet, which was highly praised by critics and audience alike. In Stuttgart Cranko created many small choreographic jewels such as Jeu de cartes and Opus I, as well as his symphonic ballet Initials R.B.M.E., but it was with his dramatic story ballets such as Onegin, The Taming of the Shrew, Carmen, Poéme de l’Extase and Traces that Cranko secured his place in the pantheon of great choreographers. In addition, he encouraged young dancers in his company - including Jiri Kylian and John Neumeier - to try their hand at choreography. Cranko’s gift for nuanced story-telling, clear dramatic structure and his exquisite mastery of the art of the pas de deux conquered New York audiences during a triumphant season at the Metropolitan Opera in 1969. World wide acclaim soon followed, as Cranko and his young company toured the globe. John Cranko died unexpectedly at age 45 on June 26, 1973, on a return flight from a successful U.S.A. tour.

Born in Lincoln, England, Jane Bourne trained at the Benesh Institute of Choreology in London and worked with Leonide Massine notating La Tricorne for the London Festival Ballet (now the English National Ballet). Following her graduation, Bourne spent some time with The Royal Ballet’s educational touring unit, Ballet for All, notating Birth of The Royal Ballet and Harliquinade. In 1974, Bourne joined the Stuttgart Ballet as Choreologist to assist in the completion of the notation scores of the John Cranko repertoire. While at Stuttgart, she also notated new productions, working with choreographers Sir Kenneth MacMillan, John Neumeier, Glen Tetley, William Forsythe, and Uwe Scholz. Bourne has staged Cranko’s ballets (Onegin, The Taming of the Shrew, Romeo and Juliet, The Lady and the Fool, Jeu de Cartes, Brouillards) for companies around the world, including the Royal Swedish Ballet, Royal Danish Ballet, The National Ballet of Canada, Australian Ballet, Teatro Colon Buenos Aires, Bolshoi Ballet, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Teatro dell’Opera Rome, Teatro Municipale Chile, Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Paris Opera Ballet, National Ballet of China and The Royal Ballet. In 1991, Bourne was awarded a fellowship of the Benesh Institute.

LIGHTING Robert Thomson LIGHTING DESIGNER
Robert Thomson is widely recognized as one of Canada’s most versatile and active theater, opera and dance lighting designers. His distinguished design career has taken him on numerous international design assignments and has led him to receive many prestigious awards. Mr. Thomson served as Resident Lighting Designer for The National Ballet of Canada for twelve seasons. His numerous company projects include Swan Lake, Romeo and Juliet, Spring Awakening, The Taming of the Shrew, and Manon. During his 24 seasons at Canada’s renowned repertory theatre the Shaw Festival, he is credited on more than 55 productions. He has worked with a diverse range of Canadian companies, including the National Arts Centre, Canadian Stage, Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre, Citadel Theatre, Pacific Opera Victoria, Montreal’s Segal Theatre, Centaur Theatre and L’Opéra de Montréal. Mr. Thomson is an Associate Professor at Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Drama.
Kevin Dreyer LIGHTING RECREATION
Kevin Dreyer is on the faculty of the Department of Film, Television, and Theatre at the University of Notre Dame where he serves as Director of Theatre, teaches and designs Lighting. During the late 1970s he served as Production Stage Manager for the Nikolais Dance Theatre where he was responsible for recreating all of Alwin Nikolais designs while literally touring the world. He left the company in 1984 to launch a free-lance design career which took him all across the U.S. and overseas. He joined Joffrey Ballet of Chicago as Lighting Director during its 40th anniversary season. During his almost 10 years with the company he oversaw all of the lighting, including the Robert Altman film The Company and designed Gerald Arpino’s last works. Most recently he has designed for Notre Dame Theatre, the Notre Dame Shakespeare Festival, Chicago Shakespeare and Giordano Dance in Chicago. He last worked with Ballet West during their performances at Wolf Trap, VA. Kevin lives in northern Indiana with his wife and three daughters.
