Welcome to Ballet West’s 59th annual production of Willam Christensen’s The Nutcracker! Mr. “C” originally created this Nutcracker in 1944 and to date it remains the oldest and longest running full American production of this holiday classic. The Nutcracker is filled with charm, verve, humor, and pure beauty – all the stuff of great theater – and no matter how many performances I see, I never get bored. It is perfect for ballet aficionados, children, and newcomers to our art form alike. I have to say, though, that a big part of this is thanks to the absolute commitment and care that our Company Artists, Young Performers, Staff, Crew, and Orchestra give to the work in order to share with you the highest level of performance you deserve. For this run of The Nutcracker, I am putting eight different casts of principals and soloists on the stage! The depth of talent in our beautiful Ballet West is that deep! By rotating casts it allows many of our artists the opportunity to take on challenging roles that they might not get to in other ballets. And it allows our audiences to see a wide variety of great performers any time they come to the theater. So, if you enjoyed this performance of The Nutcracker, perhaps you will consider coming back for another show to see another of your favorite artists. Additionally this year, we have been asked back to Washington, D.C. to present Mr. C’s Nutcracker once again at The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts – running December 10th through the 14th. What an honor it is for Ballet West to represent the arts in Utah at our nation’s capital. From our Thanksgiving run in Ogden to our opening weekend here in Salt Lake City to Washington D.C. and back again, Ballet West is committed to being cultural ambassadors to our community, the capital of the United States, and the world. Thank you, Mr. C, for this wonderful production. We always perform it in your honor! I wish you the happiest of holidays. Thank you for your patronage, and God bless you, one and all!

F ROM TH E E X ECU TI V E DIR ECTOR

Part of the joy this time of year is the tradition of families coming together and having a moment to pause, reflect, and consider all we have to be thankful for. This season is especially magical for the Ballet West family as we have much to be grateful for this year. The Jessie Eccles Quinney Ballet Centre opening this month will be a modern monument to ballet – and the arts – in Utah. With the most sophisticated environmental construction techniques, the building will open with LEED Gold certification and the facade will glow like a beacon to the street below. The expansive 55,000 square feet offers a costume shop, state of the art technical facilities and five studios (one is larger than the Capitol Theatre stage)! This crown jewel will allow artists and staff to elevate ballet to a new level in Utah and beyond. Like the new Ballet Centre, The Nutcracker is full of whimsical features that will delight us all. Ballet West Founder, Willam Christensen choreographed The Nutcracker more than 70 years ago and what you’ll see today is the longest running full-length Nutcracker in the nation! For many of us, it has become the hallmark of the holiday season, joyfully handed down and shared from generation to generation. This masterpiece has delighted tens of thousands of children and has been performed in front of ambassadors, presidents and royalty across the country. In fact, Ballet West is honored to be returning, once again to the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington D.C. to represent the finest in Utah arts with The Nutcracker from December 10 through December 14. During this very busy time of year it is especially important for me to give thanks to our spectacular patrons and donors. You enable Ballet West to continue to present holiday favorites, historic masterpieces, and cutting-edge world premieres. We are eternally grateful for your support, and together, Ballet West’s future is bright. Happy Holidays from our Ballet West family to yours!

T H E S TO RY THE NUTCRACKER begins at the Stahlbaum home on Christmas Eve. Mr. and Mrs. Stahlbaum and their children Clara and Fritz are busy preparing for the evening festivities. The guests arrive, including Clara’s Godfather, Herr Drosselmeyer. Herr Drosselmeyer has fashioned a special gift for Clara, a Nutcracker designed in the form of a small soldier. Clara falls in love with her Nutcracker at once. That night, Clara is unable to sleep without one more look at her beloved Nutcracker. She tiptoes back into the living room and cradles her soldier once more before falling asleep. She is not sure if she is dreaming or not, but before her eyes are huge mice playing in front of the Christmas tree that has grown to a tremendous size. The Nutcracker fights with the Mouse King and, in the heat of the battle, Clara takes off her slipper and throws it at the Mouse King. While he is distracted, the Nutcracker stabs him with his saber. After the battle, the Nutcracker is magically transformed into a handsome prince and, grateful to Clara for saving his life, invites her to accompany him on a journey to the fabled Kingdom of the Sugar Plum Fairy. En route, they pass through the exquisite land of the Snow Queen and her Prince. Artists of Ballet West in the Act I Battle Scene of The Nutcracker. Photo by Luke Isley.

Act II begins in the land of the Sugar Plum Fairy, where Clara is entertained by an array of divertissements, including Spanish, Arabian and Chinese dancers, as well as Mother Buffoon, with her many children who appear from under her gigantic skirt. The evening concludes with the grand pas de deux performed by the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier. Following the pas de deux, Clara is whisked away with her prince in a flying sled, while waving goodbye to the Sugar Plum Fairy and her magical kingdom.

Under Sklute’s leadership BW has toured extensively, appearing three times at Washington DC’s Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts (2008 Ballet Across America – Serenade, and two week-long runs of The Nutcracker in 2012 and 2014); a 2013 engagement at Chicago’s famed Auditorium Theater with his The Sleeping Beauty and a mixed repertory program; twice at New York City Center’s Fall for Dance Festival (Les Biches, 2009; Grand Pas Paquita, 2012); and twice at the Chicago Dancing Festival (Serenade 2010; Sinfonietta 2011). In the past five years, the company has also appeared at Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts in 2011; The Laguna Dance Festival in 2010; Las Vegas with Nevada Ballet Theater in both 2010 (Sinfonietta) and 2012 (Jewels in collaboration with NBT and PNB); and Aspen, CO., New York, NY, Victoria, BC and Dallas, TX all during the 2014/15 season. In 2009, BW graced the cover of Dance Magazine for the first time in 25 years and again was on the cover in 2013. Since 2007, the company has garnered numerous reviews and articles in such publications as The New York Times, The Washington Post, Dance Magazine, Ballet Review, and Pointe to name a few. In 2012 and 2013 Ballet West was the subject of the BBC Worldwide Production’s docudrama television series Breaking Pointe which aired on The CW channel. Sklute has introduced BW to renowned, contemporary choreographers such as Nicolo Fonte, Jiri Kylián, Mark Morris, and Twyla Tharp, among others, while expanding the company’s Balanchine repertoire and adding early 20th century Diaghilev-era masterpieces. In addition to reintroducing lost elements of Christensen’s production of The Nutcracker and reconstructing his The Firebird, Sklute conceived and produced new versions of Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty and Giselle. He developed BW’s wildly successful annual Family Series and Innovations programs . A native of Berkeley, California, Sklute began dancing at the age of 16. His early training was at the Oakland Ballet and San Francisco Ballet schools. After only two years of formal study he joined The Joffrey II Dancers (The Joffrey’s apprentice company). Two years later he was asked to join The Joffrey Ballet. Sklute was one of the last two artists personally chosen by Robert Joffrey. He danced with The Joffrey from 1985 to 2000 and then rose through the ranks to Associate Director in 2005. Sklute became Artistic Director of BW in 2007. He has extensive television and film credits and is an Adjunct Professor at The University of Utah and is an internationally sought after a teacher, lecturer, coach and judge for ballet worldwide.
