From the Artistic Director Welcome to Giselle. A big part of my mission as Artistic Director has been to revitalize some of the world’s beloved classical ballets. In 2010, I undertook Swan Lake, and in 2011, I tackled The Sleeping Beauty. With each reworking, my goal has been to stay true to the ballet’s original meaning, structure, and much of the original choreography, while bringing out the drama and magic that I find inherent to each one. Of course, there is historical precedent— many directors and choreographers have refashioned these works since their 19th-century premieres. In 2014, with these same goals in mind, I dived into Giselle alongside Principal Ballet Master Pamela Robinson Harris (my collaborator on both earlier ventures as well). I have always loved Giselle and was inspired—and not a little intimidated—by the ballet’s complicated history. Giselle is much older than other works restaged at Ballet West. Swan Lake and The Sleeping Beauty were both born out of 1890s Imperial Russia, and their styles are closer to our contemporary aesthetic for ballet. Giselle, however, hails from an earlier era: that of French Romanticism. French ballet critic Theophile Gautier conceived the ballet’s original libretto in the late 1830s. Inspired by Victor Hugo’s poem “Fantômes,” Gautier also drew upon German folklore to create one of ballet history’s most legendary creatures - the Wili. A Wili is the ghost of an unmarried maiden who, betrayed in love, died before her wedding day. Eternally in pursuit of revenge, Wilis prey upon men, forcing their hapless victims to dance themselves to death. Giselle premiered in Paris in 1841 to great success and different versions soon were being staged around the world. Giselle has the unique distinction of being one of the first ballets with an original score. Previous ballet scores were compilations of existing music written for other purposes. For Giselle, composer Adolphe Adam created a wonderfully dramatic, often undervalued score, filled with leitmotifs and subtle layers. However, like most ballet scores from the period, it is very long. Many ballet companies that staged Giselle following its premiere chose to edit the music to suit their own storytelling and dancers. Thus began a long tradition of reworking full-length ballets, and the reason that we now see so many versions of the great classics. For Ballet West’s Giselle, I particularly wanted to rethink aspects of the original libretto. I wanted the 16
characters in this decidedly 19th-century ballet to speak to a 21st-century audience. I began with questions: Who hasn’t experienced the desperation of heartbreak? Why is the best friend so often passed over for the mysterious bad boy? What groom hasn’t contemplated a romantic tryst before his wedding night? Is the wrath of Myrthe, Queen of the Wilis, who has been condemned to seek an unfulfillable vengeance for eternity, actually all that supernatural? As I explored, I realized that the characters in Giselle could possess multiple motivations behind their actions, maybe more so than the characters in any other great classic. So we moved forward with this, and with a premise of “passion, betrayal, and forgiveness from beyond the grave.” What I found most exciting was, with this premise, each cast was able to bring their unique approaches to characters, thus creating their own individual stories. I also wanted to expand the dancing in Giselle to magnify the scope and scale of the production as a whole. Pamela’s choreography does just that, allowing more dancers even more opportunities. For stylistic and choreographic concepts, Pamela and I turned to a number of sources: the Royal Danish Ballet’s definitive mid-19th-century version, the glamorous early 20th-century La Scala production, and dramatic elements from later Russian and Dutch interpretations. Scouring books, videos, DVDs, and even YouTube, we were able to conceptualize how we wanted the steps to be executed and how the story should unfold. In reconceiving the music, Pamela and I worked closely with Ballet West Music Director Jared Oaks. The three of us pored over the rarely used, complete original score, making cuts and even repeats to move the action along and enhance the drama. Additionally, Ballet West Director of Costume Production David Heuvel brilliantly designed my modifications for the costumes. Ballet West now has a completely new and unique Giselle—one that will illuminate this great classic in new ways while still doing justice to the ballet’s 179-yearold legacy. This year, I also brought in a former premiere danseuse of the Paris Opera Ballet, Karin Averty, to coach our dancers in the ballet. Karin teaches internationally, including recently at the Ballet West Academy, and her empirical knowledge and history with Giselle brings an added level of magic to the production. Since 2007, Adam Sklute has expanded Ballet West’s outlook, repertoire, and visibility with exciting Company and world premieres, increased touring, heightened public exposure, and greater focus on the Ballet West Academy. He began his career with The Joffrey Ballet, rising through the ranks from dancer to Associate Director. His stewardship of Ballet West has been marked by both financial growth and elevated artistry, and was the subject of The CW Network’s docu-drama, Breaking Pointe, which aired for two seasons. From September 2016 to October 2017, Sklute took on the dual position of CEO and Artistic Director overseeing both administrative and artistic operations of Ballet West. An internationally sought after teacher and adjudicator, Sklute has received numerous awards, including Utah’s Enlightened 50 (2014), The Bronze Minuteman Award for Outstanding Service to Utah and The Nation (2015), and most recently Utah Diversity Connection’s Business Award for outstanding commitment to diversity initiatives.

From the Executive Director As an arts administrator, I am often inspired by the people I work with. It is a perk of the job. Many of these stories the public will never hear about: dancers performing for sick children, an incarcerated woman taking her first dance class as part of our Forward Steps program, or professional dancers volunteering to work with children with disabilities to help them experience the joy of dance. Ballet West does amazing things… onstage and off. The reversal is also true--our patrons do amazing acts for Ballet West. Recently, a trust attorney for Donna L. Dell contacted me. Donna was born in 1927, went to the University of Utah, and became a nurse. She was a veteran of the Army and had been stationed in Germany in 1950, followed by serving at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Salt Lake for her entire career. She led a full life, golfing, line dancing, traveling, and volunteering. Her family said she made friends wherever she went and leaves a legacy of unselfish service. Donna passed away in June at the age on 91 and gifted her life savings of millions of dollars to Salt Lake City’s nonprofit community. She never informed any of the organizations of her estate plans or the enormity of her legacy and its impact on several nonprofit organizations. In fact, Donna’s own friends and family had no idea she had amassed a small fortune, let alone that she would be giving it all away. I never got to meet Donna, but she is truly an inspiration to me. Her act of selflessness will help stage more ballets, fund scholarships in our Academy, and support programs like Senior Steps that teach movement to elderly people. Her gift will honor her own legacy of altruistic generosity. A bequest to Ballet West can ensure the artistic excellence you enjoy today will thrive in our community for years to come. Michael Scolamiero
Michael Scolamiero joined Ballet West in 2017 after an extensive international search led by Michael Kaiser, President Emeritus of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Mr. Scolamiero previously served as Executive Director of Miami City Ballet for three years, during which time the organization achieved a significant reduction in debt, as well as robust growth in ticket revenue, contributions, and touring income. Prior to Miami City Ballet, Mr. Scolamiero was Pennsylvania Ballet’s Executive Director for 17 years, the longest tenure in the Company’s history and among the longest of any leader of a major ballet company. During his tenure, Mr. Scolamiero led the organization’s first capital campaign that raised $11.9 million (against a $10 million goal) to build an endowment and fund repertoire expansion. At Ballet West, Mr. Scolamiero is set to implement a newly completed strategic plan and excited to guide a growing and robust Company.

Synopsis Act I – Harvest time in a village in the German Rhineland. Giselle, a young peasant girl, is being courted by a young man known to her as Loys. He is in fact Albrecht, Duke of Silesia, disguised as a peasant. Loys vows his eternal love for Giselle, but they are interrupted by Hilarion, a woodsman who has been in love with Giselle since they were children. Giselle kindly tells Hilarion of her feelings for Loys. Hilarion is hurt, but he is also suspicious of Loys, suspecting that he is not who he claims to be. Hilarion vows to uncover the identity of this mystery man and regain Giselle’s love. The villagers return from the harvest and all join in a dance. Berthe, Giselle’s mother, admonishes the girl for dancing so much. Berthe is afraid for her daughter’s fragile health and wants no ill to befall her. At that moment, Berthe has a startling premonition. It is of the legend of the Wilis, young women who have been betrayed and died before their wedding day, and who must now spend eternity on earth haunting men. This, Berthe fears, will be Giselle’s fate. Berthe leads a reluctant Giselle indoors, and Loys takes his leave. Horns sound in the distance, signaling the imminent arrival of a hunting party. Hilarion returns, and breaks into Loys’ hut as the horns sound again. The hunting party arrives, led by the Duke of Courland and his daughter Bathilde, who are seeking sustenance. As Giselle sees to her guests, Bathilde engages her in conversation. The noblewoman asks if Giselle has a beau, and Giselle explains that she is engaged. Bathilde responds that she too is engaged, and inquires after Giselle’s fiancé. Giselle looks for him, but cannot find him. Bathilde is charmed by Giselle and requests the Duke’s permission to present the girl with her necklace. The Duke and Bathilde take their leave, and the hunting party disperses. Hilarion emerges from Loys’ hut with his rival’s sword, which is branded with an elaborate crest signifying nobility. He catches sight of the departing noble hunting party and connects it with the sword. He feels vindicated and triumphant. However, before he can expose Loys’ deception to Giselle, the villagers return. Hilarion hides the sword and leads them in a dance. Giselle’s friends crown her Queen of the Village. Everyone dances in celebration of the harvest, including Giselle and Loys, but their revelry is interrupted by Hilarion, who rushes toward Giselle and denounces Loys as a deceiver. He presents the sword as proof. Giselle does not want to believe him. Hilarion summons the hunting party with a horn, and Loys can no longer conceal his identity. Not only is he a nobleman, but he is engaged to Bathilde! Giselle becomes distraught beyond measure. She realizes that she has been deceived and, in her shock, goes mad. Having abandoned all hope of happiness, Giselle takes her own life, thus bringing to fruition her mother’s premonition. Act II – In the forest at Giselle’s grave. Giselle has been buried in the forest. Hilarion visits her grave to grieve, but senses the presence of the Wilis and runs away to hide. Myrthe, Queen of the Wilis, summons her subjects to appear for the initiation of Giselle into their sisterhood. Myrthe wields branches of myrtle, a symbol of death, to begin their ritual. The Wilis hide throughout the forest as Albrecht, full of remorse, also comes to mourn at Giselle’s grave, seeking her forgiveness. The ghost of Giselle appears before Albrecht and comforts him, but she cannot forgive him and rejects his offering of lilies. She disappears, like the wind, into the woods. Albrecht pursues her. 26
Meanwhile, Hilarion has been found by the Wilis. On Myrthe’s orders, they surround him and drive him to dance until he dies. Hilarion begs for their forgiveness but, as they are vengeful spirits, they show him no mercy. Now Albrecht’s presence is discovered by the Wilis and Myrthe commands that he too must die. Giselle intervenes to protect him from the angry ghosts. However, she is too new a spirit to overcome Myrthe’s power. Together, Giselle and Albrecht must both dance until he dies. A weary Albrecht pleads to stop dancing. His entreaty is refused. Giselle again appeals for his life, but she cannot sway Myrthe. Albrecht continues to dance until he collapses from exhaustion and at that moment, Giselle comes forward and forgives him for all his transgressions. The purity of her heart frees Albrecht from the spell, and the Wilis are banished by the first light of dawn. Giselle returns to her grave, her soul now lightened by the generosity of her act. Albrecht is left to weep and ponder his actions.
La Historia Acto I – Es tiempo de cosecha en una aldea Renania alemana. Giselle, una joven campesina, es cortejada por un joven quien ella conoce como Loys. Pero en realidad el joven es Albrecht, Duque de Silesia, disfrazado como campesino. Loys le jura amor eterno a Giselle, pero Hilarion los interrumpe, un hombre del bosque que ha estado enamorado de Giselle desde que eran niños. Giselle amablemente le dice lo que ella siente por Loys. Hilarion se siente herido, y cree que hay algo sospechoso en Loys, algo le dice que quizá Loys no es quien el dice ser. Hilarion sale de la choza con la espada de su rival, la cual lleva una elaborada cresta que indica pertenece a la nobleza. Hilarion alcanza a ver el grupo de cacería aristócrata a lo lejos y se da cuenta del significado de la espada. Se siente vindicado y triunfante. Pero antes de demostrarle la mentira de Loys a Giselle, la gente de la aldea regresa. Hilarion esconde la espada e invita a todos a danzar. Los amigos de Giselle la coronan Reina de la Aldea. Todos danzan, celebrando la cosecha, incluyendo Giselle y Loys, pero Hilarion interrumpe el festejo. Hilarion corre hacia Giselle y le dice sobre la mentira de Loys, presentándole la espada como prueba. Giselle no quiere creerle. Although from a musical background (his father taught piano at Paris Conservatoire), French composer Adolphe Adam was not encouraged to become a musician. However, at an early age he began to compose, specifically theatre music, and entered Paris Conservatoire at the age of 17. By the age of 20 he was already writing songs for Paris vaudeville theatres and played in the orchestra at the Gymnase, later becoming Chorus Master there. Adam wrote numerous works during his lifetime, many of which achieved great success. He also scored several ballets at the Paris Opera where the composition by which he is probably best known, Giselle, was first performed. During the final years of his life, Adam composed prolifically as ever, producing one of his finest ballets, Le Corsaire, at the Paris Opera. His last work, Les Pantins de Violette, received its premiere just four days before he died.
PAMELA ROBINSON HARRIS
Principal Ballet Master, Staging and Additional Choreography
Born in Landstuhl, Germany, Pamela received her formative training at Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet, Joffrey School of Ballet Summer Intensive, and National Academy of the Arts. Graduating early from high school at 17, she received her first job as an apprentice with Cleveland Ballet, followed by the State of Alabama Ballet in 1982 and Ballet Mississippi in 1984. Pamela joined Ballet West in 1985, advancing to the rank of Principal in 1988. In 1997, Pamela joined the Ballet West artistic staff as a Ballet Master. She served from 2006-2007 as Ballet West’s Interim Artistic Director. She has collaboratively choreographed four ballets for Ballet West’s Family Classics series - The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, and Beauty and the Beast, with previous Associate Director of Ballet West II Peggy Dolkas, and Snow White with Christopher Sellars. She has also reworked major sections of Ballet West’s productions of The Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake, and Giselle, and has choreographed for Ballet West II and the Ballet West Academy Professional Training Division. Pamela has now been with Ballet West for over 33 years, and continues to serve as the company’s Principal Ballet Master. 38

Guest Coach
Karin Averty was born in France on February 25, 1963. Her ballet training began in 1972, at age 9, with Yvonne GoubĂŠ at the Centre de Danse de Paris. One year later, in 1973, she was admitted to the Paris Opera Ballet School and joined the company in September 1979 at age 16. In July 1980, she received international recognition early in her career when she won the Grand Prix, junior category, at the International Ballet Competition in Varna. In June 1983, at the Paris Opera Ballet, she rose to premiere danseuse. In August 1987, Karin took a one-year leave of absence from the Paris Opera Ballet to become a principal dancer with the San Francisco Ballet under Artistic Director Helgi Tomasson. She returned to the Paris Opera Ballet the following year, but remained a guest artist with the San Francisco Ballet for its 1988-1989 season. Since 2009, Karin has been a freelance ballet teacher and coach for ballet companies, universities, and ballet schools. In August 2019 , Karin was named Ballet Mistress of American Ballet Theatre Studio Company under Artistic Director Sascha Radetsky.

Sets and Costumes
Peter Cazalet was born in Zambia, Central Africa, and obtained a Bachelor of Architecture degree at the University of Cape Town. He later moved to London and spent 15 years with Scottish Ballet. After attaining principal dancer status, his career was suddenly shifted due to a back injury. Peter then returned to Cape Town and designed ballets, operas, and plays as Head of Design for the Opera House. He also worked on projects in the United States, Europe, and the East. Ballet West holds a special significance for Peter as his first American assignment many years ago.

Guest Artist from Scottish Ballet
From Paris, France, Marge Hendrick graduated from the Conservatoire National Superieur of Paris in 2012. Shortly after, she joined Scottish Ballet and was promoted to soloist in 2016, and principal in 2019. She has performed leading roles in classical ballets such as The Nutcracker, The Snow Queen, and Cinderella. She has also been featured in neoclassical and contemporary works by Helen Pickett, David Dawson, Crystal Pite, Christopher Bruce, Bryan Arias, and Matthew Bourne. Marge joins Ballet West this month as part of an ongoing partnership with Scottish Ballet. Earlier this season First Soloist Katlyn Addison joined Scottish Ballet for performances of The Crucible and The Snow Queen. She also appeared with the company in the BBC documentary Five Wishes, which documents the Scottish Ballet’s 50th anniversary celebrations.

About Ballet West From Balanchine to Bournonville, and Petipa to Tharp, Ballet West boasts a rich and varied repertoire, elegant and versatile artists, and an American style and legacy that is as dynamic, expansive, and unexpected as the Rocky Mountain region it represents. Ballet West has toured the world several times over, presenting the very best in American classical ballet.

Ballet West was established in Salt Lake City in 1963. Willam F. Christensen was the company’s first artistic director, co-founding the company together with Utah’s “First Lady of the Arts,” Glenn Walker Wallace. In 1951, Christensen had established the first ballet department in an American university at The University of Utah, and with the tireless assistance of Mrs. Enid Cosgriff, this program grew into the Utah Civic Ballet, Ballet West’s first incarnation. But this was not the first ballet company Willam Christensen founded. Along with his brothers, Lew and Harold, Christensen made history by establishing the oldest ballet company in the western United States, the San Francisco Ballet. There, he went on to create the first full-length American productions of Coppélia, Swan Lake, and his evergreen production of The Nutcracker, which remains in Ballet West’s repertoire to this day. With 38 company members, 16 second company members, and a thriving academy that trains dancers of all ages, many of whom have gone on to professional careers with Ballet West and companies around the world, Ballet West ranks among the top professional ballet companies in America. Since its inception, the Company has had five artistic directors—its founder Willam Christensen, Bruce Marks, John Hart, Jonas Kage, and currently Adam Sklute, each of whom has helped to build Ballet West’s unique and expansive profile. For more than 50 years, Willam Christensen and Ballet West have developed and influenced innumerable great artists in the ballet world. Some notable figures include Bart Cook, Finis Jhung, Jay Jolley, Victoria Morgan, Tomm Ruud, Michael Smuin, Richard Tanner, and Kent Stowell. With an eclectic and ever expanding outlook, Ballet West is truly an American pioneer in the world of dance.

Meet the Hounds PRINCESS POPPY Princess Poppy is an 8 month old Irish Wolfhound. She lives in Salt Lake City with her two big dog brothers and her humans. She loves people and is working hard to finish her training classes for Canine Good Citizen certification. In her free time she enjoys walks, play time and taking naps. This is her stage debut. Princess Poppy is always ready to meet her adoring public, as any true princess should be, with a polite handshake and a slobbery kiss on the cheek.
RIVER River originally hails from the state of Washington and came to us as a young pup in 2014. Born the son of a champion, his family has always believed he could do great things. Truly, he shares that belief, along with the notion that all people and animals adore him. This majestic lad’s keen eye can spot a crumb falling to the floor from quite a distance. He’s always eager to please, but even more eager to have you scratch all the places he can’t reach. He is 37 inches at the withers and weighs 157 pounds. The stage debut for this gentle giant falls just shy of his 6th birthday.
CAUSEWAY Giants “Causeway” is a 2 ½ year old 180 lb Irish Wolfhound who spends much of his time drawing a crowd and bringing smiles to the people who meet him. In his spare time he likes to frequent off-leash dog parks, take walks in the mountains, and loves to run on the beach. Causeway is excited to make his stage debut with his brother Aengus and is thrilled to bring his talents to the great performers of Ballet West.
AENGUS Aengus is a two and a half year old 150 pound Irish Wolfhound, and is excited to make his stage debut. When he isn’t performing, he loves to play with his 8 pound Chihuahua sister, clean up any food left on the kitchen counters, and snuggle with his family on the couch. Aengus loves making new friends at Tanner dog park and on the trails in Millcreek Canyon—say hi if you see him!

During some productions, this pause may not occur until the end of the first act. • All casting is subject to change. • For your own safety and the safety of other patrons, please do not exit the Theatre before the house lights are up.
• Please silence all electronic time pieces and cell phones for the period of the performance.
EMERGENCY EVACUATION INFORMATION
• Any use of cameras and recording equipment in the Theatre, which is not authorized by the management, is strictly prohibited.
In the event of an emergency, please REMAIN SEATED and listen to information given by management and ushers.
