Partnering with the University of Utah School of Music for the fourth year in a row, we are excited to once again share these two charming operas that echo the value of community. is limited engagement follows the story of Amahl as he learns the importance of compassion and generosity, and the Dickens masterpiece of A Christmas Carol, which beautifully captures what happens when a community comes together with love and support. You’re sure to leave feeling inspired with these celebrations of the holiday season. Salt Lake Community College and the Grand eatre are proud to serve as the community’s home for compelling artistic experiences, including theatrical, musical and dance performances, captivating lectures, engaging screenings, and culturally-significant offerings. he Grand eatre works to engage, inspire and connect with our community through exceptional and accessible productions. Housed in Salt Lake Community College’s unique Center for Arts and Media, the Grand utilizes professional and local talent to create theatre that excites our audiences year a er year.

e Grand’s shows are just some of the many artistic and cultural events you’ll find here at the Center for Arts and Media. Our talented students participate in a wide variety of offerings, including concerts and performances by our band, choir, and dance ensembles, engrossing art displays, screenings for thought-provoking films and documentaries, and powerful productions in our Black Box eatre. We’re thrilled to serve as the largest venue in Salt Lake City for the annual Sundance Film Festival, where you can join fellow film lovers to appreciate the very best cinema from around the world. You’ll also find professional exhibits in our Eccles Art Gallery, free screenings and discussions with our professors on classic films, and stimulating lectures and presentations. Our Grand Youth program provides numerous avenues for junior high and high school students from around the state to explore, perform, and develop a life-long connection to theatre and the arts. is program includes exhilarating summer camps, accessible a erschool programs, and free tickets for students to Grand eatre productions. is is the fourth year we’ve had the pleasure of partnering with the University of Utah School of Music to bring you the beloved score by Gian Carlo Menotti, followed by an adaptation of Dickens by Utah locals Mike Leavitt and Anthony Buck. We’re also excited to once again work with the incredible Salt Lake Symphony, who is providing the delightful music throughout both shows. Many patrons have grown to expect Amahl/A Christmas Carol as a part of their holiday tradition – and we can see why! THE SYMPHONY

F

ounded in 1976, the Salt Lake Symphony is one of the area’s most highly respected volunteer driven orchestras. e Salt Lake Symphony is a non-profit organization dedicated to performing quality classical music concerts for the Wasatch Front community. e Symphony performs around 15 concerts per year.

e approximately seventy-five hard-working musicians of the SLS volunteer roughly 10,000 hours annually to accomplish this goal. Although the members of the Salt Lake Symphony come from all walks of life and frequently work full-time in other professions, they hold one thing in common: ey play for the love and passion of music. eir dedication as volunteers sets them apart and creates a unique bond. WHO’S WHO ON THE CREATIVE STAFF ROBERT BALDWIN (Conductor: Amahl) is a performing musician and a music professor at the University of Utah, Music Director for the Salt Lake Symphony, and the founding conductor for Sinfonia Salt Lake, a professional chamber orchestra that debuted in 2015. He has appeared across the United States, Europe and Asia, as a conductor and performer on viola and viola d’amore. His performances have received international attention and have been featured on New York’s WQXR Classical Radio, and nationally syndicated public radio programs such as Performance Today, Highway 89 and Weekend Edition. In his spare time, he enjoys writing, reading and spending time outdoors in Utah’s wild places. EMILY BEATSE (Asst. Stage Manager) is excited to be working on this production as one of the ASMs. She is currently a Junior in the Stage Management program at the U of U. Her previous ASM credits include: e Lifespan of a Fact (PTC), e Lion in Winter (PTC), Men on Boats (Studio 115), Our Country’s Good (Babcock). She is a proud recipient of the Lee & Audrey Hollaar Technical Scholarship. ROBERT BREAULT (Director) has a career featuring an extraordinary breadth of repertoire. Opera highlights include numerous appearances with New York City Opera, Utah Opera, Chautauqua Opera, Atlanta Opera, and Arizona Opera. He’s also appeared with companies such as Portland Opera, Opera New Orleans, and Florentine Opera. He appeared with Edmonton Opera in recent productions of Rigoletto and Tosca. Robert Breault’s concert career includes performances with orchestras that include the Philadelphia Orchestra, Cleveland Symphony, San Francisco Symphony, Milwaukee Symphony, Toronto Symphony, Atlanta Symphony, and Montreal Symphony, to name but a few. Robert has served as Director of Opera at the

University of Utah since 1992 and enjoys cooking, photography, and spending time in the garden with his wife, Julia and their 8 dachshund fur babies. ANTHONY T. BUCK (Lyricist: C. Carol) has over a hundred credits to his name as stage director, music director, actor, singer, stage manager and composer on stages in Utah, Ohio, New York and Italy. Favorite credits include Cosí fan tutte, e Magic Flute, Rigoletto, Faust, Don Giovanni, L’Elisir d’amore, Amahl and the Night Visitors, e Cabaret Girl, e Mikado, Ruddigore, e Pirates of Penzance, HMS Pinafore, Princess Ida, My Big Fat Utah Wedding, Not the Messiah, A Christmas Carol, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Into the Woods, Forever Plaid, Father of the Bride, and It’s a Wonderful Life. He sits on the board of Next Stage Productions and has been a contributing writer to their original pieces Epic: An Audience Participation Fantasy Adventure and Arabian Nights. ADAM DAY (Sound Design) has a BFA in Performing Arts Design from the U of U. Some of his recent credits include sound design for Spamalot, Hairspray, A Streetcar Named Desire, Jekyll & Hyde, Young Frankenstein, and Little Shop of Horrors (Grand

eatre); Steel Pier, Bring It On, American Idiot (U of U eatre Department); Climbing With Tigers (SLAC); Lost in the Woods (Flying Bobcat eatrical Laboratory); and Exodus (NOW-ID). He also works as the Technical Coordinator at the Draper City Amphitheater where he has been for the last eight seasons. KIERSTEN NICOLE FARLEY (Stage Manager) is a Senior in the U of U BFA Stage Management Program. She served as the Stage Manager for Dracula at the U and the Assistant Stage Manager for Chess (MCD), Company (Babcock), Amahl and the Night Visitors ( e Grand), A Christmas Carol ( e Grand), Dialogues of the Carmelites

WHO’S WHO ON THE CREATIVE STAFF (Kingsbury Hall), and Our Country’s Good (Babcock). She is a Utahna B Meilstrup Scholarship recipient. AARON HOENIG (Asst. Stage Manager) is a 5th year student double majoring in eatrical Sound Design and Biology. Previously, he was the ASM for Die Fledermaus and Dialogues des Carmelites (Kingsbury Hall). Aaron has also been the sound engineer for Saturday’s Voyeur 2018 and 2019, Pinkalicious, and the True Story of the ree Little Pigs (SLAC), as well as Dogfight (Babcock). MICHAEL G. LEAVITT (Composer, Conductor & Director: C. Carol) is a doctoral student in Orchestral Conducting and graduate of the Collaborative Piano Masters at the University of Utah. He is a vocal coach, accompanist as well as musical director for opera, choral, and musical theater. Recently, Michael composed a new one-act opera setting of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol which premiered at the Grand eatre performed by the University of Utah Lyric Opera Ensemble and Sinfonia Salt Lake. As associate conductor, Michael worked with Tony award winning soprano Audra McDonald for the Hale Center eater Orem’s production of 110 In e Shade. In addition, Michael has been the pianist, music director, and/or conductor for many musical theater and opera productions including: Saturday’s Voyeur, First Date, Spamalot, Perdita, Candide, L’elisir D’amore, Trouble In Tahiti, Die Fledermaus, Amahl And e Night Visitors, and many more. LANEY MARSELLA (Props Coordinator) is a senior in the BFA Stage Management program and a Junior in the BFA Performing Arts Design Program with a Props emphasis at the University of Utah. Past SM credits include: e Odyssey (Babcock), the 2018 Fall and 2019 Spring Musical eatre Ensemble Showcases (Studio 115). Past ASM credits include: Company and Big Love (Babcock); and Twel¡h Night (PTC). Past as18

sistant prop design credits include Dracula, the Musical (Marriott Center for Dance). CHLOE MASON (Costume Coordinator) is a senior in both stage management and PADP with a costume design emphasis at the UofU. SETH MILLER (Lighting Design) started out working in the Local 99 stage hands union, a er which he attended the University of Utah for a degree in theatrical design. Seth began working at Lagoon Amusement Park in 1997 for their Entertainment Department as Staff Lighting Designer, holding that position for a number of years. He has worked as a free-lance Lighting Designer for a variety of local theatre companies, as well as many corporate events around the country, including Walt Disney World for Disney Event Group, Harley Davidson’s Annual National Dealer’s Convention, and many others. Seth has been the Artistic/ Executive Director for the Grand eatre in Salt Lake City for the past five seasons. HALEE RASMUSSEN (Set Design) received her BFA from the University of Utah’s Performing Arts and Design Program with a double emphasis in technical direction and set design. She is currently the Assistant Technical Director and Scenic Charge Artist for the UofU Department of eatre, and a resident set designer for the Grand

eatre. Other design credits include Lyric Opera Ensemble, Plan B eatre Company, Salt Lake Shakespeare Company, Alligator Press Productions, and Lagoon Entertainment; with assistant design credits from Idaho Shakespeare Festival, Great Lakes

PATRON INFORMATION

AUDIO ENHANCEMENT EQUIPMENT is available for theatre patrons who are hearing-impaired. e concession stand has Comtex wireless personal receivers which allow a patron to sit anywhere in the theatre and receive high fidelity audio. Because there is no charge for this service, you will be requested to leave your driver’s license with the cashier until the equipment is returned. BABIES AND SMALL CHILDREN o en make it uncomfortable for other theatre patrons. erefore, no children under 5 are allowed. Small children must have their own seat. DISABLED PATRONS may use wheelchair seating areas in the theatre. Each area can accommodate four wheelchair patrons and companion chairs. Ticket prices vary for each section. Aisle seats may be requested by patrons who can be assisted in the transfer from wheelchairs to theatre seats. BOX OFFICE HOURS are 12:00PM to 5:00PM Monday through Friday and 12:00PM to 8:00PM on the night of a performance, including Saturdays.

LATECOMERS will not be seated in their reserved seats until the end of a scene. Latecomers will be seated in available seating that will not disturb punctual theatre patrons. LOST AND FOUND will be held by the head usher until the end of the performance.
