FROM THE STAGE DIRECTOR
F
ew moments were more impactful to the history of modern theater than the mid-twentieth century dance musical, with all it’s gilt and finery, its beauty and idealism. The rugged but goodhearted guy wins the independent and under-appreciated girl, while the unquestionably evil bad guy finally gets what’s coming to him. Everyone eventually gets a partner and every show boasts a dream ballet. It’s every hope we’re taught we should have, all wrapped up in a neat two hour package of glitzy costumes, song and dance. We all know them, and deep down part of us loves them, or at least identifies with our shared desires. It’s said that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Mockery is the basest of insults. Parody sits happily somewhere in the middle, without necessarily pushing toward either extreme. Curtains really is a prime example of that balancing act, taking jabs at the cheesy nature of those fancifully lighthearted love stories, and at the same time connecting us to the ideal situations we wish we were allowed to live in...and why not throw in a little murder mystery just for kicks. Theater, ultimately, is educational, emotional, or escapist, but more often a blend of the three in a variety of mixtures. Curtains offers it all. Take home from it what you will. Whether it’s the hope of love, the tears of laughter, or the simple desire to dance like that without breaking something, don’t forget to look back a few decades at what the musicals of the past brought us, all the way up to the imitation, mockery, or parody of tonight, and hopefully decades to come.

SHANNON MCCULLOCK (Costume Design) is extremely excited to be designing for The Grand! A Utah native, Shannon graduated from the U of U Performing Arts Design Program with Costuming Emphasis in 2010. Her recent designs for the Grand Theatre include: A Wall Apart, West Side Story, Rocky Horror, First Date, Marvellous Wonderettes, Spamalot, A View From the Bridge, Perdida, and Hairspray. She has also done costume design and construction work for Salt Lake Acting Company, the Classical Greek Theater Festival, Westminster College Opera Studio, the University of Utah’s Babcock Theatre, Studio 115, and the Utah Museum of Natural History. CHRISTINE MOORE (Choreography) is an Adjunct Asst. Professor in the Theater Department at the U of U. She holds her BFA and MFA from the University’s Department of Ballet. She is excited to be back with Curtains after choreographing West Side Story. Credits include: Cats, Wild Party (Studio 115); Hair, Would Be Gentleman, A Funny Thing Happened… (Babock Theatre); Young Frankenstein, Full Monty (Grand Theatre). Her work has been showcased in the American College Dance Festival, The Mormon Tabernacle Choir Christmas PBS Special 2013-2019, various Dance Showcases and industrial shows. MÁIRE NELLIGAN (Props) received her degrees in theater eons ago and spent some time directing with HerVoice, a feminist theater troupe in Kent, Ohio. Moving west, she worked with local and semi-professional theaters in Arizona. During the Arizona years, she also spent time as a firewatch and a ranchhand, as well as an adjunct professor at Cochise Community College. After moving to Utah, Máire worked for SLCC’s Fine Arts department before coming to work for The Grand. She loves being the propmaster, and generally considers whichever show she’s currently working on to be her favorite. She will admit, however, that the two “most fun ever” were La Cage aux Folles and Spamalot.
