For many of you, this will be the first time experiencing this delightful confection... after all it’s not the ubiquitous Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
That being said, this little gem is the winner of the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Musical and 5 Tony Awards including Best Book of a Musical and Best Score...and it has one of the most intriguing backstories of any Broadway musical.
It began in Canada as a 40-minute spoof of 1920s American musical comedies and was presented at the author’s bachelor party as a wedding present to his bride. The writer’s name is Bob (Robert) Martin and his fiancée’s is Janet Van De Graaff. Remember those names. They’ll be popping up frequently. Also, the groom’s best “man” was Lisa Lambert who not only composed the music but played the title character in this original version. It was then expanded for presentation at Toronto’s Fringe Festival where its success led to a professional premiere at The Winter Garden Theater in Toronto. After a subsequent out-of-town tryout at Los Angeles’s Ahmanson Theater, it premiered on Broadway at the Marquis Theater on May 1, 2006 garnering rave reviews.
Once seen, it’s easy to understand why this show has become more than a cult classic. It’s daffy characters, lilting melodies, raucous comedy, and snappy wit have made it a favorite with musical theatre devotees and general audiences alike.
And, its heartwarming message is a much-welcome panacea in these challenging times. Bring on that bluebird!
