PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
W
elcome to the Grand Theatre! We are delighted to have you join us—whether this visit is your first, second, or beyond—as we continue our 2014-2015 season with the cult classic musical, Little Shop of Horrors. The timeless doo-wop singing, the wonderfully written characters, and the amazing leafy, green plant Audrey II (she made me write that last part as you can see in our picture) bring this musical to the top of many people’s lists, including mine. After a sold out run of Forever Plaid, Little Shop of Horrors is the second show in the Grand’s fantastic season which moves to Thornton Wilder’s The Skin of Our Teeth in March, and then closes with the incomparable Always…Patsy Cline. The Grand Theatre also has a fantastic “Backstage at the Grand” series, a Grand Youth Program, and a to-be-announced new play by an up-and-coming playwright. As you can see, we are in the middle of a full season and I hope you will join us for everything we have to offer here at the Grand Theatre. Salt Lake Community College and the Grand Theatre have experienced tremendous expansion during the past several years. Our stunning new Center for Arts and Media combines the latest technology and resources in digital arts education with the best teachers in the valley and puts them all in one environment—sharing, creating, inspiring, and collaborating throughout its 130,000 square feet. The stage has been set for student success here at SLCC. Thank you again for joining us at the Grand Theatre; we are glad you are here. Please enjoy the show! A NOTE FROM THE GRAND’S DIRECTOR
L
ittle Shop of Horrors is one of my favorite musicals, and I’m very excited to bring it to our stage! This classic features music in 1960s doo-wop style. The characters straight from “Skid Row” are perfectly written to bring together comedy, romance, and suspense. With songs like Suddenly Seymour and Somewhere That’s Green, this award winning musical will have you rocking-out in your seat. David Schmidt (director/choreographer) has given wonderful life to this classic and has put together a great cast. We’re also very pleased to welcome so many new faces to the Grand’s stage, as well as a few of our returning favorites, even though you may not SEE one of them…you’ll certainly hear him. We are so proud to call the Grand Theatre the “Community’s Professional Theatre,” where we bring in local artists, actors, directors and designers to help produce the amazing theatre you are about to see. We hope you will join us for the remainder of our season that includes Thornton Wilder’s The Skin of Our Teeth and Always…Patsy Cline starring Erica Hansen. Enjoy the show and watch out for that leafy, green plant Audrey II – she bites! Sincerely,
Seth Miller Interim Director

DIRECTOR’S NOTE
S
tories: the oldest form of communication. Storytelling predates writing, with the earliest forms being usually oral combined with expressions and gestures. These stories regale success, failure, love and even loss. We use these stories to teach, to learn, to express and to feel. Actors are often referred to as storytellers. They take words and give them the breath of life. They translate punctuation into pause or even suspense. In my own home, we share the stories of our past, the desires of our future and the lessons we have or think we may learn. As adults, we seek to teach our youth through stories and experiences. We simply seek to tell you a story and share a lesson. Our intentions are never to bore, or to scold, or bring fear into your heart. We share with the sincere hope that history shall not repeat the atrocities of the past, but be enhanced for the better through the lessons previously learned. From my most early memory as a very young boy growing up in Lancaster, New York, I have been fascinated with the concept of selling one’s soul to the devil. Being a Catholic Altar Boy, I knew that I needed to stay pure so the devil would not over take me. But, having had many life experiences since then, I have found that I often do the opposite of what many may think is the right or correct thing to do (I shall not bore with the details, but find me after the show for a good laugh). Nature vs Nurture? Faust did it…why can’t I? Our beloved character Seymour appears to share in my plight. He wants to be good, he seeks to be good, but the chance to win over the girl of his dreams proves too much of a temptation. He succumbs, and inevitably loses everything. Sweet, tortured Audrey ends up sacrificing herself for the success of her one true love. Simply the human condition? Or mistaken desires?
We are not telling a tale of redemption in this story (Les Misérables). SPOILER ALERT: Everyone loses everything in this show. What can we as a troupe of actors aspire to teach you? 1. Don’t feed the plants. 2. Don’t seek to be poor and live on Skid Row. 3. Love is life’s greatest joy and pain. Today these lessons will be taught through the profound music of Alan Menken and the words of Howard Ashman. Thank you, to a great cast and creative team. FEED ME!!!!! David Schmidt Director
