As one does during the holiday season, Onstage Ogden is again welcoming family from just down the road to come visit. In this case, our visitors happen to be the world-class artists of Ballet West and the Utah Symphony. From even closer to home, we are featuring Ogden’s very own Chamber Orchestra Ogden alongside international recording artists The Swingles.
For some of our younger audience members, this may actually be their first time at the theater. The Nutcracker and Here Comes Santa Claus are amazing opportunities to introduce the next generation to the power of performing arts. If you’ve brought a young person with you to this performance, I hope you’ll take a moment to reflect on the profound experience you’ve afforded them.
Discover Cache Valley Bank
Personally, I am thankful this holiday season for all of you—donors, subscribers, and ticket buyers—who have made possible in 2022 a wide variety of performances that would not have come to Ogden otherwise. I hope you take great pride in knowing you live in a community where live performing arts play a meaningful role.
Thanks for making today’s performance a part of your holiday plans. We look forward to seeing you again in 2023.

Since 2007, Adam Sklute has expanded Ballet West’s outlook, repertoire, and visibility with exciting Company and world premieres, increased touring, heightened public exposure, and greater focus on the Ballet West Academy. He began his career with The Joffrey Ballet, rising through the ranks from dancer to Associate Director. His stewardship of Ballet West has been marked by both financial growth and elevated artistry, and was the subject of The CW Network’s docu-drama, Breaking Pointe, which aired for two seasons. From September 2016 to October 2017, Sklute took on the dual position of CEO and Artistic Director overseeing both administrative and artistic operations of Ballet West. An internationally sought-after teacher and adjudicator, Sklute has received numerous awards, including Utah’s Enlightened 50 (2014), The Bronze Minuteman Award for Outstanding Service to Utah and The Nation (2015), and, most recently, Utah Diversity Connection’s Business Award for outstanding commitment to diversity initiatives.
Michael Scolamiero joined Ballet West in 2017 after an extensive international search led by Michael Kaiser, President Emeritus of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Mr. Scolamiero previously served as Executive Director of Miami City Ballet for three years, during which time the organization achieved a significant reduction in debt, as well as robust growth in ticket revenue, contributions, and touring income. Prior to Miami City Ballet, Mr. Scolamiero was Pennsylvania Ballet’s Executive Director for 17 years, the longest tenure in the Company’s history and among the longest of any leader of a major ballet company. During that time, Mr. Scolamiero led the organization’s first capital campaign that raised $11.9 million (against a $10 million goal) to build an endowment and fund repertoire expansion. At Ballet West, Mr. Scolamiero is set to implement a newly-completed strategic plan and is excited to guide a growing and robust Company.

The Nutcracker begins at the Stahlbaum home on Christmas Eve. Mr. and Mrs. Stahlbaum and their children, Clara and Fritz, are busy preparing for the evening festivities. The guests arrive, including Clara’s godfather, Dr. Drosselmeyer. Dr. Drosselmeyer has fashioned a special gift for Clara, a Nutcracker designed in the form of a small soldier. Clara falls in love with her Nutcracker at once.
That night, Clara is unable to sleep without one more look at her beloved Nutcracker. She tiptoes back into the living room and cradles it once more before falling asleep. She is not sure whether she is dreaming, but before her eyes are huge mice playing in front of the Christmas tree that has grown to a tremendous size. The Nutcracker fights with the Mouse King and, in the heat of the battle, Clara takes off her slipper and throws it at the Mouse King. While he is distracted, the Nutcracker stabs him with his saber.
After the battle, the Nutcracker is magically transformed into a handsome prince and, grateful to Clara for saving his life, invites her to accompany him on a journey to the fabled Kingdom of the Sugar Plum Fairy. En route, they pass through the exquisite land of the Snow Queen and her Cavalier.
Act II begins in the land of the Sugar Plum Fairy, where Clara is entertained by an array of divertissements, including Spanish, Arabian, and Chinese dancers, as well as Mother Buffoon, with her many children who appear from under her gigantic skirt. The evening concludes with the grand pas de deux performed by the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier. Following the pas de deux, Clara is whisked away with her prince in a sleigh, while waving goodbye to the Sugar Plum Fairy and her magical kingdom.

ARTISTS’ PROFILES
Principal Bassist of the Utah Symphony since 1988, David Yavornitzky has performed as concerto soloist, participated in U.S. and International tours, and has collaborated with many of the world’s finest conductors and guest artists. Yavornitzky also holds the position of Professor of Double Bass at the University of Utah, where he maintains an active teaching studio. Several of his students have won statewide and national solo double bass competitions. He is a tireless proponent of contemporary music, having had compositions written for him, as well as having given important premieres of contemporary works. As a conductor, Yavornitzky has led many diverse ensembles, including area youth, collegiate, and professional orchestras, and he has conducted several Utah premieres of contemporary works with the Nova Chamber Music Series.
David Yavornitzky attended Baldwin-Wallace College and Conservatory, where he earned degrees in both musical performance and in theoretical physics. His double bass teachers include the late Anthony Knight of the Cleveland Orchestra and Edwin Barker, Principal Bass of the Boston Symphony. He is an alumnus of the Tanglewood Music Center Fellowship program and was awarded its C.D. Jackson prize for outstanding achievement.
Ellesse Hargreaves is humbled to share the stage with such incredible artists and musicians. Hargreaves’ work is mainly behind the scenes as she has been involved with Utah Symphony | Utah Opera for the last ten years. She studied Theatre at Southern Utah University and her past collaborative works include Mopey Wrecks (Riot Act Theatre), Love’s Labour’s Lost (New World Shakespeare Co.) and Everyman (Meat & Potatoes Theatre Co). A special ‘thank you’ goes out to any in this audience who brought with them a child, for a lifelong love of music can begin at an early age. Ellesse Hargreaves would like to thank her mother for her part in thisfor playing such hits as Beethoven Lives Upstairs and Vivaldi’s Ring of Mystery while she listened as a young girl from the backseat of the family Aerostar.
Kaitlin Mills is a woman who wears many “hats”: actor, visual artist, makeup artist, arts administrator, and mother. Previous acting credits include Utah Shakespeare Festival’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Hermia), Sense and Sensibility (Anne Steele), and Amadeus (Katherina Cavalieri), as well as Taming of the Shrew (Bianca) for the Shakespeare in the Schools Tour. She is thrilled to be returning to the stage for the Utah Symphony this holiday season.

THE SWINGLES
The Swingles are one of the world’s most admired and loved vocal groups. With a natural flair as entertainers, their stylish, classy shows take them to venues and festival stages across the world. They have earned 5 Grammy® Awards and are recipients of multiple prestigious international accolades. With generations of fans from their live performances and appearances on film and TV soundtracks, The Swingles’ musical evolution and creative drive makes them as relevant today as when Ward Swingle started the group nearly six decades ago.
With their trademark vocal dexterity and innate musicality, The Swingles are reimagining jazz, classical, folk and pop from their ever-growing repertoire of arrangements alongside a rich vein of new original material. The group’s secret ingredient is the ability of the seven singers, soloists, songwriters and storytellers to combine as one seamlessly blended and timeless sound. The Swingles have always
made creative use of close-mic amplification, and in the last decade, they have added unique live audio looping techniques to their stage performances—an immersive layering up of vocals to mesmerise the audience.
American-born Ward Swingle first assembled a group of Parisian session singers (originally named Les Swingle Singers) to sing Bach’s music for the keyboard in 1962. The resulting album ‘Jazz Sebastian Bach’ was a huge hit, breaking new musical ground and launching The Swingles to fame. Since then, the group has released more than 50 albums encompassing a huge variety of music, fuelled by Ward Swingle’s pioneering spirit and wide-ranging musical tastes.
Collaborations with artists from Labrinth to The King’s Singers, Peter Hollens and Jamie Cullum add to The Swingles creative output. The Swingles founded and curated the hugely successful London A Cappella Festival for 10 wonderful years from 2010–2020.

ONSTAGE OGDEN
In 1949, Beverly Lund and Ginny Mathei decided they wanted to add even more culture to Weber County. So, for the small fee of $400, they brought the Utah Symphony to Ogden for a single performance. Three hundred people attended the concert. This 1949 concert was a big success, so the women decided to present even more concerts in Ogden. They organized a committee within the Welfare League (later the Junior League) to raise funds for the Symphony Concerts. Then, in 1957, this committee reformed and incorporated as the Ogden Guild. After a few more name changes and the addition of Ballet West performances in 1982, the organization became the Ogden Symphony Ballet Association.
Under the direction of numerous board members and long-serving Executive Directors like Jean Pell (27 years), and Sharon Macfarlane (14 years), Onstage Ogden has expanded our programming to include internationally renowned classical dance, vocal, and chamber music. Since our inception, we have presented over 800 performances to tens of thousands of Utahns.
In addition, Onstage Ogden actively works to engage and educate younger patrons. For example, our Youth Guild has provided generations of high school students with opportunities to serve. We also offer a variety of education classes, from Masterworks Music Detectives to Music and Dance Explorers. And we are partnering with several local community organizations to expand these programs to reach even more children and students. Onstage Ogden is proud to celebrate 70 years sponsoring only the finest music and dance in the Greater Ogden area. We are honored participate in the enrichment of our community by presenting professional classical performance.
