Welcome Dear Friends: Welcome to OSBA’s 2015–2016 season in the newly remodeled Browning Center! There’s nothing better than seeing one of these concerts or ballets LIVE. For 65 years we have presented these concerts in Ogden for northern Utah audiences. Thank you, thank you to the hundreds of people who have been instrumental in that longevity: the visionaries who saw the need beginning back in 1950; the faithful patrons; the donors who have contributed large and small amounts every year; and the volunteers who have given countless hours of service to OSBA. Look at all that is scheduled for this year: ♫ Utah Symphony Masterworks Series - four inspiring concerts ♫ Utah Symphony Entertainment Series - four diverse concerts sure to entertain ♫ Utah Symphony Family Series - entertainment for the entire family times three ♫ Ballet West - “The Nutcracker” with the entire troupe and “Beauty and the Beast” with Ballet West II dancers ♫ BYU Ballroom Dance Company is back by popular demand ♫ “5 Carols for Christmas and Jingle Jacks” written by Jim Christian and Ken Plain Just a reminder about OSBA: • We are a non-profit organization with a 501(c)(3) tax designation. • We contract with Utah Symphony | Utah Opera, Ballet West, and other groups and pay for their Ogden performances held at Weber State’s Browning Center. We do not receive proceeds of fund raising efforts held by any of those organizations. • Ticket revenue pays about 45% of the cost of the concerts. The balance comes from donations made by individuals, businesses, foundations, and city, state, and local governments, including the RAMP tax initiative. • Besides the concerts, OSBA also supports: Educational and community outreach programs Youth Guild for the Performing Arts “The Ride” for seniors living in Weber County Informal “Conversations” prior to the Classical Series concerts

Help us fill the house at every concert by inviting your neighbors, family, and friends to join you! We look forward to welcoming you to each and every concert. Sincerely, Ogden Symphony Ballet Association Board of Directors and Staff

Artists’ Profiles

GRAMMY Award winner Jeff Tyzik is one of America’s most innovative and sought after pops conductors. Tyzik is recognized for his brilliant arrangements, original programming, and engaging rapport with audiences of all ages. Tyzik holds The Dot and Paul Mason Principal Pops Conductor’s Podium at the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and also serves as Principal Pops Conductor of the Seattle Symphony, the Detroit Symphony, the Oregon Symphony, and The Florida Orchestra. This season, Tyzik will celebrate his 22nd season as Principal Pops Conductor of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra.

Jeff Tyzik Conductor

Frequently invited as a guest conductor, Tyzik has appeared with over fifty orchestras including the Boston Pops, Cincinnati Pops, Milwaukee Symphony, Pittsburgh Symphony, Toronto Symphony, Indianapolis Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte Carlo, Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. In May 2007, the Harmonia Mundi label released a recording of works by Gershwin with Tyzik conducting the RPO and acclaimed pianist Jon Nakamatsu. This recording stayed in the Top 10 on the Billboard classical chart for over three months. Alex Ross of The New Yorker, called it “one of the snappiest Gershwin discs in years.” “His concert is the kind of thing that’s likely to give classical music a good name, perhaps even make it seem, dare I say, relevant,” writes John Pitcher of the Gannett News Service. As an accomplished composer and arranger, Tyzik has had his compositions recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra, Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, the Vancouver Symphony, and Doc Severinsen with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London. He

has also produced and composed theme music for many of the major television networks, including ABC, NBC, HBO, and Cinemax, and released six of his own albums on Capitol, Polygram, and Amherst Records. Tyzik worked closely with Doc Severinsen on many projects including orchestrating many of the great band leader’s symphony orchestra programs. He produced a GRAMMY Award winning album, The Tonight Show Band with Doc Severinsen, Vol. 1. Tyzik’s subsequent recordings with Severinsen garnered three more GRAMMY nominations. In his 22 years with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, Tyzik has written over 200 arrangements, orchestrations, and compositions for orchestra. A consummate musician, Tyzik regularly appears as a guest conductor in the orchestra’s classical subscription series. He has also been commissioned to compose original works for orchestra, including a trombone concerto, which was funded by a grant from the National Endowment of the Arts and subsequently performed at Carnegie Hall. Tyzik conducted the world premiere of his original work New York Cityscapes with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra in 2010. Tyzik composed a timpani concerto, commissioned by the RPO, and also led the RPO in the premiere of his new

801.399.9214 [ symphonyballet.org ]

orchestral suite, Images: Musical Impressions of an Art Gallery to rave reviews. In the 2015–16 season, Tyzik will premiere his new work Jazz Concerto for Violin and Orchestra on his Philharmonic Series performance with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. A native of Hyde Park, New York, Tyzik began his life in music when he first picked up a cornet at age nine. He studied both classical and jazz throughout high school and went on to earn both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the Eastman School of Music. While there, he studied composition/arranging with Radio City Music Hall’s Ray Wright and jazz with Chuck Mangione. Tyzik subsequently toured with Mangione as lead trumpet and worked on five Mangione recordings as a producer and performer from 1976–81. Committed to performing music of all genres, Tyzik has collaborated with such diverse artists as Chris Botti, Matthew Morrison, Wynonna Judd, Tony Bennett, Art Garfunkel, Dawn Upshaw, Marilyn Horne, Arturo Sandoval, The Chieftains, Mark O’Connor, Doc Severinsen, and John Pizzarelli. Tyzik has created numerous original programs that include the greatest music from jazz, classical, Motown, Broadway, film, dance, Latin, and swing. Artists’ Profiles Stephen Sayer and Chandrae Roettig are dancers/instructors who specialize in smooth style lindy and collegiate shag. While they have a love for all things that swing, their primary influences and inspirations come from the Los Angeles Jitterbugs of the 1940’s and 1950’s. Their partnership began in late 2010 and together Steve and Chanzie have taken First Place titles in several national swing competitions. In 2011 they won 1st place in the Lindy Hop divisions at the National Jitterbug Championships and US Open Swing Dance Championships. In 2012 they also took 1st Place at Camp Jitterbug and again at the US Open. In addition to those titles, Steve is also the 2010, 2011, and 2012 National Collegiate Shag Champion and in 2012 Steve was inducted into the California Swing Dance Hall of Fame. Stephen Sayer Chandrae Roettig Dancers

Steve and Chanzie are based out of Los Angeles where they teach weekly in North Hollywood, but you can find them teaching and performing all over the United States, Europe, and Australia. They are committed to improving and pushing the limits of their own dancing as well as those who take their classes. Eva and Patricio have danced together since 2001. Both of them started dancing at a very young age. Eva started ballet training at age 7. Patricio was 10 years old when he took his first folk dance class. They both have more than 20 years of experience as professional dancers. In the most recent years Eva and Patricio starred in different major productions, the most notorious include Luis Bravo’s Forever Tango; and ZAIA, the first show staged by “Cirque du Soleil” in Macau. Besides being passionate about dancing, Eva and Patricio have a great reputation as dance instructors. They have taught in Argentina and traveled many times around the world to teach special workshops to students of all levels.

Artists’ Profiles Inspiring others through dance and performance is a gift and passion that is part of his mission in life. Forrest appeared in The Ugly Truth, Disney’s Haunted Mansion, and commercials for Jack-in-the-Box and Pepsi—just to name a few adventures, including three performances at the Hollywood Bowl. He has also been a guest dancer on Dancing With The Stars. He also danced Lindy Hop and Foxtrot in The Gangster Squad with Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, and Sean Penn.

Forrest Walsh Melissa Shahin Dancers

Forrest has had the privilege to perform at many awesome locations, including the Alex Theater in Glendale, the beautiful Cicada Club in Los Angeles, and the Ford Amphitheater with Barbara Morrison. He recently realized part of his mission statement to help create a world where everyone would greet each other as they walked down the street with smiles and joy, when he participated in the 2014 Rose Parade walking and dancing the cakewalk for 5 ½ miles! Proud of his competition record, as well, he is a two-time Open Professional American Smooth Champion and an Open Professional International Latin Champion. He’s also won competitions in Lindy Hop, Argentine Tango and Salsa as well. He is close to completing a screenplay featuring Ballroom and Social dancing. He also has a Masters Degree in Opera: Solo Voice Performance. It is truly satisfying to teach and entertain others, and he greatly enjoys hearing both an audience’s and student’s compliments and appreciation at his performances and lessons. Melissa Shahin is a certified and professionally trained American and International Ballroom Dancer. Her love for dancing began at a very young age and has never stopped. She has performed in countless productions and continues to compete in various dance competitions. She is also known for her contributions to stage and theatrical choreography. Nothing brings Melissa more joy than to share her love of dance with people and only hopes it will bring them as much enjoyment as it has brought her throughout her life.

Artists’ Profiles Michael Lynche’s life has been defined by two things: love and second chances. The Florida native and devoted family man’s rise from obscurity was well documented through his riveting appearance on American Idol. Known to America as “Big Mike,” he was famously “saved” by the judges, giving him a second chance to continue through the prized competition. After wowing millions of fans on American Idol with his comforting and powerful voice and performing throughout the United States as part of the American Idol LIVE! tour, Michael has created his sonically rich and lyrically inviting debut album. The first single, “Who’s Gonna Love You More” has been rising steadily on the Urban Adult Contemporary charts. The second single, “Today” has impacted Adult Contemporary and Smooth Jazz radio this summer.

Michael Lynche Vocalist

Mike’s heartfelt music has been virtually a lifetime in the making. He got his first guitar when he was three and would take his axe to church, where he would mimic the moves of the band’s guitar player. Beyond church, Michael’s mother shared her love of music with Mike and introduced him to a wide range of artistic sounds and styles, including 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Michael Jackson, Earth, Wind & Fire, Bonnie Raitt and Jimi Hendrix. None of Michael’s remarkable journey would have been possible without the love of his wife and the second chances he has enjoyed throughout his life. Now, with Mike’s new album, signed by Big3 Records and CEO Bill Edwards, Mike gets to live out his dreams, both as a family man and musically. Julie Jo Hughes is a charismatic and fiery vocal powerhouse. Her adept versatility shines with the sweetness of Karen Carpenter, the grit of Axl Rose, and the power of Celine Dion. Her voice has been heard across many genres of performance, from musical theatre and radio show to theme park and revue shows. She was the lead female production singer for a major cruise line, where she performed nightly with the 11-piece orchestra. She has appeared in numerous theatrical productions, as well as two regional television commercials and an independent film. She holds a dual degree from The University of Iowa in Theatre Arts and Performing Arts Entrepreneurship. She currently sings with the Arthur Stuart Band of Hank Lane Music & Productions, located in New York City. She is also loving her new role as mom to son, Eliot! When she isn’t performing, Julie Jo spends her time coaching others on nutrition and healthy lifestyle. www.facebook.com/juliejohughesactress.

A Tribute to Sharon Macfarlane

Thank You for 15 Years! After fifteen years of devoted service, Sharon Macfarlane is retiring from her position as Executive Director of the Ogden Symphony Ballet Association. Her dedication to the community and her love for the arts has been remarkable, and she will be greatly missed. Under Sharon’s careful direction, the OSBA has thrived, presenting 184 Utah Symphony performances, 70 Ballet West shows, 10 performances by BYU groups, 7 Jim Christian productions and 4 Utah Opera productions. She secured crucial grants, sponsorships and individual donations to ensure the viability of the organization during the recession. She also oversaw numerous summer garden parties, golf tournaments, galas, fundraising drives, and committee meetings. Through it all, Sharon exemplified grace and professionalism. Her colleagues describe her as “kind,” “attentive,” “community-minded,” and someone who consistently goes above and beyond. As a recent feature in Focus magazine relayed, Sharon “embodies personal humility while tenaciously holding on to her professional will for the OSBA. She understands and values her teammates, the board of directors, the sponsors and the donors.” In addition to her work at OSBA, Sharon has volunteered for the McKay-Dee Foundation and the American Red Cross. She has also been active in the Ogden chapter of the Rotary Club. In 2007, she received the Spirit of the American Woman Award by Your Community Connection; in 2011, she was awarded the Mayor’s Award in Arts for the Humanities, and in 2015, she was honored by the Friends of Telitha E. Lindquist College of Arts and Humanities with the Arts and Humanities Association Award. Therefore, it is no surprise that Sharon is loved by all who know her: in fact, her young granddaughter once asked if she was famous because she had noticed that everyone recognized and spoke to Sharon wherever they went in Ogden. Sharon, thank you for your committed service. We love you. We will miss you at OSBA. And we wish you all the best for your future!
