DIRECTOR’S NOTE

W

hen I proposed adding our concerts to the PTC season, I wanted to be able to offer something a little different for our musical theatre fans.

I wanted to do bigger shows that were hidden gems and would probably never make it onto the mainstage for a full production. Dirty Rotten Scoundrels fits perfectly into that category. When I saw the original production on Broadway, I loved it and I listened to the cast recording. I actually listened to it a lot. The score is great fun—not really old-fashioned, but with lots of tunes you can hum. I think the title might be familiar because of the 1988 movie with Steve Martin, but maybe you aren’t as familiar with the musical. The plot lends itself to this spontaneous theatrical form. The con men at the center of the story have to be good at improvising, as do all of the actors in our concert productions. They have had a mere ten days of rehearsal, so you never know what is going to happen. Have fun! Karen Azenberg
