DIRECTOR'S NOTE
A
play surrounding two powerful and legendary women held immediate appeal for me. As I dove further into Mary Stuart and the story of two women pitted against each other, I was struck by the echoes of modern politics that ring loudly throughout the tale. When we turn on the television or click onto social media today, we’re subjected to constant attempts to sway opinion and hold power by controlling the narrative—essentially telling it your way, before someone else gets to tell it (and risk them telling it better). Though slick camera footage and high-powered marketing consultants may not aid them, there is no mistaking the efforts of our rival queens to control the narrative—and through that, perhaps control whole nations. Equally recognizable to a modern audience is the role of optics in the play. Both queens and their advisors employ moments of pageantry and theatricality to influence perception and time, and again, choices are weighed not only based on what is right or wrong, but also on how the public will perceive an event or course of action. Much has been written and many stories have been told about the contest of power and personality between these two famous queens. While great dramatic license is taken with these historical figures, Fredrich Schiller takes great care to not choose a clear side—I suspect harnessing his background as a lawyer, he ensures that both arguments are compelling and strong. But what I find most enticing is the play’s interest in exploring what makes both these leaders human and therefore fallible; beyond the strength of this dialectic, we uncover a personal portrait of two dynamic women and how they were shaped by the burden of a shared desire to unify nations sharply divided by warring ideologies.

DRAMATURGICAL NOTES
S
chiller’s Mary Stuart begins in the fevered wake of the Babington Plot, a Catholic conspiracy which sought to rescue Mary from her long imprisonment in England, depose the Protestant Queen Elizabeth with the aid of Spanish forces, and to place Mary on the English throne. Upon the discovery of the plot, Elizabeth’s spymaster Sir Francis Walsingham used the ciphered letters sent between Anthony Babington and Mary Stuart to implicate the Queen of Scots in the plot to assassinate Elizabeth. Ultimately, Babington and the other Catholic noblemen who had conspired in the plan were tried and brutally executed. When Mary was brought to trial before a tribunal of forty-two judges, her covert correspondence with Babington was brought forward as evidence of her complicity. The Babington Plot was the final domino to fall in a series of plots and conspiracies which pitched the two queens against one another as her allies sought to bring Mary the throne. Nineteen years earlier, Mary Stuart came to England seeking sanctuary and aid from her royal cousin after years of civil war in Scotland saw her defeated by the Protestant Scottish nobles opposing her rule. Mary also desired to be recognized as Elizabeth’s successor. Although Elizabeth initially offered sanctuary, she and her advisors soon saw the threat Mary posed as a catalyst for rebellion. Elizabeth sought to contain the threat Mary Stuart posed to her own claim on the English throne, refusing to meet her and keeping her a prisoner of the Crown. When Elizabeth first became queen, she restored the Protestant Church of England and was proclaimed its Supreme Governor. Anyone taking public or church office was required to swear allegiance to the Queen as head of both Church and State. This rendered Catholicism effectively illegal in England, although Elizabeth had little interest in prosecuting Catholics as long as they remained loyal to her. But in 1570, Pope Pius V issued a Papal bull from Rome, excommunicating Elizabeth and weaponizing the division of the faiths. Believing Elizabeth to be illegitimate and Mary Stuart the true queen, the Pope designated Elizabeth the pretended Queen of England, a heretic and a favorer of heretics. He absolved her subjects from any allegiance to her and her laws and effectively authorized plots against her. Parliament retaliated with the passage of the Treasons Act in 1571, declaring it high treason to call the queen a heretic, to affirm any particular person as her successor, or to publish any bull from the pope. Further plots to depose Elizabeth and bring Mary to the throne followed. Each conspiracy had some tacit if not actual backing from the Catholic Church, and strategized the invasion of England by foreign powers and the uprising of English Catholics. In 1584, Parliament passed The Bond of Association, which proclaimed that anyone within the line of succession on whose behalf a plot was undertaken would be excluded from the line and prosecuted “to the death”. The statute ensured that it was only a matter of time before Queen Elizabeth would have to take decisive and irrevocable action against her cousin Mary Stuart. Dramaturg Alexandra Harbold
