COMING NEXT MONTH

MARY STUART AN EPIC POWER STRUGGLE THAT IS FULL OF INTRIGUE AND BETRAYAL, AND HAS THE FEEL OF AN ELIZABETHEAN POLITICAL THRILLER.

By:

JEAN STOCK GOLDSTONE & JOHN REICH

England’s Elizabeth I and Mary Queen of Scots: one queen will win; one must fall. Follow the politically-charged biographical drama and powerplay between two of history’s greatest Monarchs, who happened to be women. With inspiring female roles, and a theme grounded in the struggle between religion, womanhood and statesmanship, this highly-relevant play mirrors, explores and questions these issues present today.

Pioneer Theatre Company’s production of

THE PLAY THAT GOES GNORW is made possible with season support provided by:

DIRECTOR'S NOTE “Dying is easy, comedy is difficult” has never been more true. Comedy is very difficult to direct, to produce, and cast. Yet comedies are the most-requested type of production. I understand. We live in a complex and often overwhelming world, and sometimes it’s great fun to be able to leave that world behind. To escape. To laugh. To satisfy that desire, I am always on the lookout for a good comedy. Just about a year ago, many of you took part in our annual season-selection survey (I hope you will do so today) and weighed in on some of the titles I was considering for 2019– 2020. The Play That Goes Wrong was selected by 90% of the respondents as something they would want to see this season. Ninety percent! No play or musical has ever, in the history of Pioneer Theatre, gotten as strong a response. Yay! We should do that play, I thought to myself. And so we are…doing that play. I should direct that play, I thought to myself. And so I am…. And, as it turns out, it is one of the most complex shows I have ever directed. This comedy requires better acting than the most difficult Shakespearean drama, better timing than any musical, and a design that is both specific and flexible, so as to facilitate the development of the staging. It takes quite a team to put together a comedy: designers, technicians, stage managers, and actors working in concert to get all of the parts just right. In a comedy, timing is everything. The Play That Goes Wrong has been an ideal way to kick off my personal holiday season. It’s an ambitious undertaking, but I’m fortunate to be surrounded by an insanely talented group of artists. For a crazy artistic director, there is nothing more fulfilling. Thank you for supporting live theatre here in Utah. Thank you for joining us for this season. If you’re not a regular here at PTC, thank you for joining us for this production. Have a very wonderful holiday season and a happy, healthy New Year!

Dear Theatre Goers, Thank you, thank you, thank you, for allowing us to present our fantastic production of THE MURDER AT HAVERSHAM MANOR here on our Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society stage. The mystery of THE MURDER AT HAVERSHAM MANOR is the heart of the production. Deceit, love, treachery – it’s all on the page. And right when you think it’s someone – instead it is someone else! Truly this production is written by the hands of Ms. Brideswell – and there could there never be a story quite as tumultuous, loving, incredible, remarkable, questionable, intriguing, wonderous, interesting, stimulating, and exciting as this one. If you ever get confused while watching the production, please know that ‘mystery,’ according to the Oxford Dictionary, means “a hidden or secret thing” so do not be alarmed when you are unclear on the direction of the story. A mystery story is supposed to be solved at the end. The point of mysteries is to also keep you in suspense, which according to the Oxford dictionary means “in a state of mental suspense.” So while you may be baffled by the action on stage, please know that you will leave the theatre knowing exactly what, and how, everything happened. Enjoy the show!

Chris Daniels

MAXWELL BENJAMIN CHESTERWITZ (Cecil Haversham/Arthur the Gardener) Maxwell was born to his two wonderful parents Lisa and Samuel Chesterwitz (Hi Mom!) on a lovely Tuesday in April. He weighed 2,273 grams. His favorite sandwich is ham with extra pickles and spicy mustard. Max has performed by holding his breath for 3 minutes and he has also played the trombone and the triangle with his primary and secondary school bands. Max would like to thank his parents, his physical education teacher, and his corgi, Stephen, for making him feel special.

DENNIS TIMBERTOP (Perkins) is thrilled to be back at CPDS, after most recently, appearing in the title role in last summer’s production of CAT. Other favorite credits include A View from the Crosswalk and A Doll’s Apartment. A mushroom farmer in the eastern tip of Nottinghamshire, Timbertop is a two-time winner of the Cornley Mycology Club’s prestigious honor The Fun-gi Award. He can also be found hosting trivia and karaoke every Thursday/Friday night at local hot spot, The Rusty Pipe. Many thanks to his fellow cast-mates and to his mom for sewing his costume.

CHRIS DANIELS (Inspector Carter) Chris is the newly elected head of the Drama Society. For tonight’s show, he served as the voice coach, dialect coach, fight choreographer, casting director, and costume designer. He also plays the lead role and, of course, directed. The Society would like to thank Chris for his remarkable passion and efforts. Credits within the University: Hamlet in Hamlet, Macbeth in Macbeth, and Othello in Othello.

SANDRA WILKINSON (Florence Colleymoore) It has been said by many that Sandra Wilkinson was destined for stardom. Her debut performance was at 6 days old as the lead in The Nativity (Church Of The Holy Rood Cornley). Sandra sharpened her skills in pantos playing Egg #1 in Mother Goose; Chair #1 in Goldilocks; and Pumpkin #1, Mouse #1, and Shoe #2 in Cinderella (Acorn Theatre Guild). When Sandra stumbled upon The Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society she found her artistic home, and last year’s performance as Masha/ Irina US Olga was heralded as “Unthinkable.” She has also auditioned seven times for Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber’s upcoming reality television talent show “GRIZ! (The Search for Grizabella).” Sandra would like to thank each and every one of you for letting her touch you deeply with her performance.

JONATHAN HARRIS (Charles Haversham) is super dee duper thrilled and honored to have a speaking role in The Murder at Haversham Manor. A big thank you to the director, his idol/ mentor (and hopefully soon-to-be Best Friend) Chris for giving him his first speaking role this season after 23 shows with the company. Recent roles include: Waiting for Godot (Standby Godot), The Lion and The Wardrobe (Coat #4), Hamilton (Lobby Merch Seller), and his favorite, The Little Mermaid (Ariel Body Double). In his spare time Jonathan is always looking for a connection. He’s a Pisces with a Sagittarius Rising. He loves root beer floats, small hills with leaves on them, and videos of Huskies trying to say “I love you.” You can find him on Tinder, Match.com, Bumble, and OkCupid. He’s available for theatrical endeavors/ romantic inquires/catering starting December 22nd.

ANNIE MACDONALD (Stage Manager) has been Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society’s stage manager for three seasons. She also serves as wardrobe supervisor, set painter, spotlight operator, assistant to the assistant director, head usher, web site designer and progarmme typist. She dedicates her work on this show to her two turtles, David Tennant and Matt Smith. TREVOR SANTOS (Sound and Lighting Technician/Set Designer) has worked on numerous productions for Cornley Polytechnic. His participation is through special arrangement with Cornley Polytechnic’s Academic Probation/Disciplinary Council. The University would like to apologize on Mr. Santos’ behalf for his behavior during numerous productions, namely Dramatic Society productions of The Lion and The Wardrobe and the unfortunate circumstances surrounding the production of CAT. Trevor supports Manchester United FC and is also president of the University’s English New Wave Music Society.

ROBERT JOHN PARRY III (Thomas Colleymoore) This will mark Robert’s fifth production with the Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society, after appearing as The Lion in last year’s production of The Lion and The Wardrobe, for which he received multiple Olivier nominations. Past credits include: every role in Hamlet - twice, Coriolanus Takes a Shower (Westminster Players), STILL Waiting for Godot (Portsmith Playhouse), and his now famous one-man One Man, Two Governors. Robert is the author of multiple books on acting including, “Pretending to Listen,” “Everyone Is Looking At YOU,” “Incredibly Loud and Ferociously Funny,” “Acting In Dressing Gowns,” and most notably, “Respect for Backting: How to Act With Your Back.” Robert would like to thank his mother and father for conceiving such a prolific artist.
