LOVING HANDS AT HOME

The Broadway theatre, as an institution, is quite clearly going through some massive shifts involving COVID recovery, the attraction to tourists, the powerful issues of diversity, and towering expenses on all sides of the curtain line .

Myself, I’m a “home town” guy with 25 years of service to the Old Globe Theatre in my rear view mirror, and a serious dependency on continuity of both staff and audiences ..I’ve spent the majority of my career with the team effort of almost personally selected artists who have chosen living and serving together the needs of a specific community, so when the opportunity to birth our brand-new, country music inspired show here at the Pioneer Theatre in Salt Lake City, I fairly leapt at the opportunity .

It was helpful, I admit, to have known PTC Artistic Director Karen Azenberg for most of her life, as her celebrated father, Emanuel (Manny) Azenberg and I had collided frequently during his legendary partnership with playwright Neil Simon, among others ..Knowing mutual “territory,” as we have experienced, made it easy for me to embrace a personal investment that is the hallmark of most great regional theatrical centers, in which position the Pioneer now finds itself .

For us, to have the luxury of a community proud and creative, like this one, is merely “coming home,” to an environment not only supportive, but which celebrates its local talent with nearly a lifetime commitment to serious, creative continuity ..If theatre-going is a “habit,” and it is, we’re among our peers, safe and enthusiastic .

A brand-new, original American musical is something we, in this country, consider to be our national contribution to the art of theatre ..If you like the broad- shouldered, openly romantic and happy event that is a musical theatre piece, you’ve come to the right place ..With national pride, we assert that nobody does it better .

And with the support and enthusiasm of PTC, we hope, as well as your approval, to add some delight to the world’s collection ..No hands more crucial to us as the “loving hands at a home” like this one ..We’re so truly grateful to be here!

“No coal in the Christmas stocking for this entertaining family show...”

—The Hollywood Reporter

“I was dazzled. You’d have to have a Grinch-size heart not to feel a smile spreading across your face...”

—The New York Times

“A true gift! A sparkling adaptation with a surefire charmer of a score.”

—New York Magazine

2013 Tony Award-nominated for Best Musical, Best Book, and Best Original Score.

Musical

Based on the motion picture A Christmas Story distributed by Warner Bros., written by Jean Shepherd, Leigh Brown and Bob Clark, and upon In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash written by Jean Shepherd. Produced with permission of Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures and Dalfie Entertainment.

The classic 1983 movie was a hit on the screen, and again on stage. Now the song-writing team behind the Tony Award-winning hit Dear Evan Hansen and the Oscar-winning film La La Land do it again in hilarious fashion with A Christmas Story, The Musical. It’s Christmas time in 1940, and all that bespectacled 10-year-old Ralphie wants for Christmas is the official Red Ryder Carbine Action BB gun. But will Santa deliver? Visit PTC this holiday season and travel back to a simpler time in chilly Indiana where little boys dream of BB guns, Santa, and triple-dog-dares, and revisit all your favorite moments from the movie, bunny suits, tongues stuck to flagpoles and leg lamp awards.

What will it take to get Ralphie the gift he truly wants for Christmas?
