DIRECTOR’S NOTES

S

ome people call The Music Man the practically-perfect musical. And I must confess, I subscribe to that way of thinking.

Why? Well, there are so many barometers for why we like or dislike a show. Ways of measuring why a musical written in 1958 can stand the test of time and still resonate. You could write a thesis on this subject, but here are a few thoughts as you wait for the curtain to go up. In terms of its practically-perfect-ness, The Music Man hits every checkbox on the What-Do-You-LookFor-In-A-Musical list. A memorable score—check; an accessible but not-too-over-told story—check; great characters—check; dancing—check; singing—check, check, check, check, check! How many musicals can you name that have so many not only recognizable, but iconic songs? Is there anyone who doesn’t know Seventy-Six Trombones? Trouble? Plus, for a musical set in 1912, it’s thematically as relevant in 2015 as any show I know. The change-resistant, stubborn Iowans depicted in The Music Man can still be found in every one of us. And the lighthearted reminder that, sometimes, something wonderful can happen if you open yourself up to a new thought, a new idea, or a new way of doing things, is a message as vital today as it ever was. Practically. Perfect. Karen Azenberg, Artistic Director

CELLULAR PHONES, CAMERAS AND PAGERS ARE NOT ALLOWED IN THE THEATRE. Even if set to silent or vibrate, they may disrupt wireless sound equipment. Please either leave your phone in your car or check it at the coat check. “TEXTING is disturbing to the actors, and your fellow audience members. Please refrain from use. If you might need to be reached during a performance, leave your exact seat location with the box office. The number for emergency calls is 801-581-6963. We have a hearing assistance system that allows our hard-ofhearing patrons to sit in any seat in the house. Deposit required; inquire at the coat check. We welcome disabled persons. Those with special requirements should request assistance in advance. Refreshments are not permitted in the auditorium, but are available in the main floor lobby during intermission and pre-show.

Smoking is not permitted in University buildings. Please ask ushers for smoking locations. Evening performances are at 7:30 p.m. Monday thru Thursday, 8:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday; Saturday matinees at 2:00 p.m. Please avoid arriving after curtain time. To avoid disturbing other patrons, latecomers will not be seated until a scene or act change. This policy has been instituted at the request of many of our patrons. Season ticket holders may exchange their tickets for another performance of the same play. Return tickets to the box office at least 48 hours prior to the performance date. Tickets are nonrefundable. You may donate your tickets, helping yourself and Pioneer Theatre Company. If you are unable to attend a production, make a tax-deductible gift of your tickets to the Theatre so that we may re-sell them. Call the box office 48 hours prior to the performance date. The Patron Services staff will serve you from 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. During the run of a show, the box office is open Monday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until 8:30 p.m. No children under age 5 admitted to performances.

AS ORIGINAL AS YOU When artists make exclusive print runs of their work, they sign and number each piece. A 1⁄1 mark represents a total original, something unlike anything else. This singular approach is evident in the exclusive relationships O.C. Tanner Jewelers maintains with the world’s most exceptional makers of jewelry and in the one-of-a-kind pieces that our master craftsman creates to honor the stories of people like you. You’re an original. Celebrate your 1⁄1 story at O.C. Tanner Jewelers.
