Green Room Gallery
Our green room gallery is a collective endeavor between community and artists. This space allows us to offer a variety of diverse visual perspectives from local artists based on inspiration found from themes raised onstage. In keeping with SLAC’s mission to nurture our local, creative community, we celebrate these reinforcements born between the visual and performing arts. This exhibit's artist has generously chosen to donate 20% of the proceeds to SLAC.
Throughout the run of 4000 MILES we are pleased to present work by long time SLAC subscriber Collin Chandler. Collin sees character and metaphor in intimate, inanimate subjects. His “locked” series, or landscapes, or industrials all imply subtext, and thus he has named this exhibit beneath our stage "Subscript." In 2010, at forty-three, Collin had the notion to start painting while visiting galleries in the French Quarter. He studied under accomplished Utah landscape painter Shanna Kunz, and set out to be an accomplished painter himself. “My wife and I have been subscribers for a long time now and have made a tradition of Crown Burgers and Cabernet in the Green Room before each SLAC offering. We’ve bonded and blathered there with crowds of friends, or another couple, or our kids, or just each other. We’re always excited to see new art and discuss whatever is hanging before taking our seats upstairs. I couldn’t be more pleased to be the topic on those walls during this production.” -Collin Chandler Spring renewals is an exciting time here at SLAC, and Collin’s exhibit is a reminder of the diverse and brave subscribers that allow this theatre to exist.
University Professional Theatre Program SLAC is delighted to partner with local universities to heighten theatre students’ educational experience by taking them out of the classroom and hiring them at a professional theatre. We are excited to welcome Salt Lake Community College student Austin Grant as part of the University Professional Theatre Program. “I’m definitely excited to be making my professional theatre debut at SLAC. It’s been an absolute pleasure thus far. I couldn’t be happier with 4000 MILES, and the team working on the show with me. Before working at SLAC, I’ve only performed plays in high school and at Salt Lake Community College. I’ve loved performing at SLCC Black Box Theatre, and am appreciative of the education and experiences I have gained at SLCC. Director's Notes Amy Herzog has discussed in many interviews the family characters and politics that were the basis for her plays AFTER THE REVOLUTION and its successor 4000 MILES. For those of you who haven’t done the Google search, the fascinating character of Vera, who also appears in AFTER THE REVOLUTION, is based on Herzog’s own grandmother, Leepee, who she describes as “an old New York lefty… funny, dry, sassy and devastating.” In AFTER THE REVOLUTION audiences were introduced to Vera as the widow of Joe Joseph, the patriarch of their Marxist family. It’s now 2007 and Joe has been dead ten years when Vera is visited by her grandson Leo at the end of his cross-country bike ride. Herzog herself completed such a ride and stayed with her grandmother in the West Village for several months. Vera lives on her own, political passions intact but dealing with the frustrations of old age. Herzog has said how much she wanted to write an older character with the dimensions that she observed in her grandmother “because I do think there’s a way that older people can just disappear. I feel, in a very pronounced way, my own grandmother’s fight to remain present and relevant.” To be “present and relevant” while struggling with the frustrations of parts that don’t work so well and words that won’t come, not to mention the attitudes of younger relatives, is a struggle that fascinated me. I guess it’s easier to be fascinated when one is observing rather than partaking, and I have spent lots of time lately thinking about my own elderly relatives. And of course working on a play about this particular intergenerational friendship I am drawn to examine my own relationships with older female relatives; my two utterly different grandmothers and my great grandmother Harriet who lived with us. A first generation New Zealander, she was a farmer’s daughter who married the farm hand and then raised her children in rural New Zealand; profoundly

conservative in her politics she was intent on holding onto her vision of herself as the matriarch through family and financial upheaval and the suicide of one of her sons. I look back on the two us together, the “I know everything that is worth knowing” 16 year old and the 93 year old with very little real power in the world, with some wonder (and a little embarrassment). It’s easy to find dramatic conflict in the confrontation of opposites, but the subtleties of Herzog’s writing and the gentle nuances of the relationship between Vera and Leo result in the exploration of the similarities of outlook and personality despite the generational divide. Not that the divide doesn’t exist, and it’s the source of much frustration between the two, but it doesn’t ultimately define or limit who they are together. Despite its intimacy Herzog’s play gently reminds us that the private individual experience is always part of a larger political and historical process.

Who’s Who AUSTIN GRANT
(Leo) is excited to be making his debut at SLAC. Austin auditioned for his first play junior year in high school out of pure curiosity, got the part and instantly became addicted. After that, Austin did a feature film and then trained for a solid year with some local acting coaches, and has been auditioning ever since. Other credits include: Jason Willet in RABBIT HOLE, Jabez Stone in SCRATCH, Romeo in ROMEO AND JULIET, and Titus Savage in THE CURIOUS SAVAGE, at Salt Lake Community College. Although Austin has a passion for theatre, most of his work has been in film. He had the honor of working in the Sundance Labs with the next wave of top notch film directors this last summer. Austin looks forward to this opportunity and working with the wonderful people at Salt Lake Acting Company.
JOYCE COHEN*
(Vera) is happy to return to SLAC after last performing in (A MAN ENTERS). Other favorite productions include: SWIMMING IN THE SHALLOWS, BEAUTY QUEEN OF LEENANE, THE CLEAN HOUSE, and THE MEMORY OF WATER. Joyce has appeared on Broadway, off-Broadway, and on regional stages across the country. Most recent credits: the NEW PLAY SUMMIT at the Denver Center Theatre (BENEDICTION) and OTHER DESERT CITIES at Pioneer Theatre Co. (Amanda) is excited to be making her debut at Salt Lake Acting Company in 4000 MILES. She most recently was seen in AVENUE Q as Christmas Eve at the University of Utah. Previous credits include Lady Macduff in MACBETH and Lady Percy in HENRY IV PART I with The Grassroots Shakespeare Company. She graduated with her BFA in Classical Acting from Southern Utah University. Currently she teaches Theatre at Alianza Academy. Hye Soo would like to thank her family and friends for their constant support and most importantly her son Lennon.

Streetlight Woodpecker by Shawn Fisher Monday, April 28 at 7:00 PM STREETLIGHT WOODPECKER follows the story of Benji, an undersized Marine who has returned to his Irish-Catholic neighborhood in Philadelphia after being critically injured during battle. He bears not only the medals he earned but also the scars, and now that he has come home he must face the emotional wounds he avoided by going to war. When his father’s suicide renders him homeless just days after his return, Benji moves in with his childhood friend Sam. Soon questions that threatened Benji throughout his youth resurface, questions about his manhood and his relationship with Sam, and he distracts himself with booze, pills, and reckless fighting. Meanwhile, as Sam tries to protect him from self-destruction, Benji plots to kill a woodpecker that loudly bangs the metal streetlights in the neighborhood. (Executive Producer) has been in the world of dance and theatre professionally for over 35 years, during which time she performed in the Broadway, national and International companies with A CHORUS LINE. In 1978 as a U of U Theatre student, her performing relationship with SLAC began. Since 1995 she has worn many hats at SLAC, including Choreographer, Director, Box Office Manager and Director of Audience Services. She conceived and created the position of Director of Communication and Audience Development and assembled the communication team to generate a renewed energy and excitement about the theatre before taking on her current position as Executive Producer. Cynthia remains a working artist in the theatre and has choreographed SATURDAY’S VOYEUR for 16 years and directed the musical for five years. She has choreographed many SLAC productions including THE PERSIAN QUARTER; GO, DOG. GO!; BAT BOY THE MUSICAL; AND WATER LILIES from CABBIES; COWBOYS; and THE TREE OF THE WEEPING VIRGIN.
