TITLE I ARTS EDUCATION PROGRAM One of the most rewarding aspects of our season is our annual children’s show and Title I Arts Education Program. This invaluable program allows over 1,700 underprivileged schoolchildren to experience the magic of live theatre at no cost to them or their schools. With arts education receiving less and less attention and funding, this program plays a vital role in providing a more wellrounded education to Utah students. Every children’s play that SLAC produces is based on a literary work. SLAC creates a study guide to accompany each play and distributes it to every class that attends the Title I Arts Education Program. The guide includes learning activities to be completed before and after the children see the play, reinforcing the connection between literacy and the arts. After the children watch the show, they are treated to a Q&A with the actors, providing the opportunity to ask about theatre, acting, the story, and the elements of the performance. Tiya Karaus, a second-grade teacher from Washington Elementary said of SLAC’s Title I Arts Education Program, “We look forward to seeing a play at SLAC each year. My students have little or no experience with live theatre before attending a performance. We love every moment of the experience, especially being able to ask questions after the show.”

Penelope Caywood & her daughter Presley, SLAC'S Kid Connection

Penny (Mom): Presley, would you please introduce yourself for the program? PJ: Mom, how am I going to top what I said last year? Mom: Last year you were nine. Lots has happened. Give it a try. PJ: Hi! I’m Presley. I’m 10 years old. My favorite school subject is math. When I grow up I want to be a news reporter. I think Salt Lake Acting Company is great and my mom has been working on the children’s show for nine years. I think that’s awesome. She spends a lot of time with her shows even before rehearsals and it’s pretty cool how committed she is. My mom is also a director at Youth Theatre at the U. It’s kinda cool how this job intermingles with the other job in a great way. Mom: How is that? PJ: Well, you are either working with kids or for kids. Mom: So, you know the show I’m working on is based on The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs, right? Do you believe the wolf’s plea? PJ: No, I don’t actually believe that he’s being truthful in what he’s saying. Mom: Do you think it’s fair that the wolf had to go to a pig court and not a wolf court? PJ: Yeah, I don’t think that part is very fair. I feel like it’s kind of discriminating against him. But, it was already unfair because his story wasn’t true. And then, super unfair because the pigs were like, “You’re a wolf and we’re not going to listen to you, dude.” Y’know? Mom: How do you know which story

is true and who to believe? The pigs' version or the wolf's version? PJ: Um … I don’t KNOW what story is true. I’m just going off my opinions of what I think, personally. My opinion is that the wolf is probably lying through most of this about what he’s done. Mom: So, with that in mind do you have suggestions for me in the direction of the show? PJ: I think you should cast the show in such a way in which the wolf is a loveable guy so that people really like him - so they will fall in love with him, then when they realize what he’s done they’re like .... BOOM … that sucked. Not like your show sucked - um … like the wolf was not cool and they were tricked, y’know? Mom: Why do you want me to trick the audience that way? Do you think that actually happens in real court cases? PJ: Um … it really depends. If someone did something wrong and they hire a lawyer to help them in court then they’re probably going to lie about something. But does the wolf even have a lawyer in your show? Mom: He doesn’t. PJ: Yeah, so, I’m pretty sure he’s lying … well, if the wolf turns out not guilty, that’s totally great, too. I guess it could go either way from whatever point of view you have. Um … but in my personal opinion I don’t believe the wolf. Mom: Okay, I see what you’re saying. Any other suggestions? PJ: You need levels in the courtroom. The judge, yeah, that’s what they’re called, should be higher than the rest

of the cast. I mean, do they all have to sing and dance? A staircase might be a good idea for the judge. And it could be cool if you had like an actual courtroom podium for the judge. Mom: The judge’s bench. PJ: Yeah, like a real courtroom. It would make it look much more official and fun for the people watching it, I think. Um … and maybe just have chairs for the other actors that they can quickly move when they have to dance. Mom: Any advice for the actors? PJ: Um … like in general? Mom: Yeah. You’ve been to my rehearsals and in my youth theatre productions. PJ: DON’T DEFY MY MOTHER BECAUSE YOU’LL BE SORRY. Mom: Woah. (laughing) You make me sound super mean. PJ: Well, your actors have probably done other professional shows but they should think about your show like going back to school. Follow directions first time asked - and if you’re not good then it’s going to be hard for them. Mom: (still in shock and laughing) PJ: So, basically, your actors shouldn’t have a bad attitude. Mom: (still laughing) Wow. Just wow. I love my actors! How about something positive? PJ: Um … well, have these actors done shows for kids before? Because if they haven’t they need to know to please not make big faces and gasp a lot. I know that happens on little kid tv shows and they may see that and think, “Oh, this is what kids like,” but there are going to be elementary school kids in the audience and that’s just not very entertaining. Even some of the little kids who come won’t like the fake gasping

and big eyes. So they should try to avoid that. But otherwise, try and have a lot of fun. If you haven’t done theatre for kids before and it’s a whole new experience for you, then try to enjoy it. I like watching actors who look like they like what they do. Mom: What are your thoughts about SLAC? PJ: So, SLAC is a very nice theatre. I love the kind of vibe it gives off. I’ve been going there for a long time. Obviously, I haven’t seen all the shows there, but all the people who work there are very lovely. And when you go to SLAC it’s different from other theatres because it feels more like a community. Kind of like a family. The casts and the people who work there all have a bond. So when you go into SLAC it’s a very welcoming environment. And they do sell concessions so if you get peckish then you can go right down to get a treat. Mom: Peckish, huh? PJ: Yes. I love your shows at SLAC during the holidays.

WHO’S WHO ALI BENNETT (Lillian

Magill) is excited to return to SLAC after over 10 years. Ali was last seen here at SLAC in SATURDAY’S VOYEUR 2006. She is a graduate of the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York City. Ali has been seen on many stages in the area including: Egyptian Theatre Co., Silver Summit Theatre Co., Pioneer Co., Hale Center Theatre, and The Grand Theatre. Some of her favorite credits include: BETTY BLUE EYES (Joyce), COMPANY(Amy), CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG(Baroness), THE WEDDING SINGER(Julia), BRIGADOON(Meg), RAGTIME(Evelyn), XANADU(Calliope), and The MARVELOUS WONDERETTES(Cindy Lou). By day, Ali teaches preschool at Dancing Moose Montessori School. A big thanks to all the friends and family who watched her sweet Benny so she could swine it up.

Becky has performed in almost 40 productions at several community and professional theaters across the Wasatch Front; this being her third with SLAC. A few of her most memorable roles have been The Drowsy Chaperone in THE DROWSY CHAPERONE, Elizabeth Benning in YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN, and as The Housekeeper in Utah Opera’s 2017 production of THE MAN OF LA MANCHA. Becky can also be seen at the Natural History Museum of Utah where she portrays the Viking witch, Rúndis Elidottir, and works as the public programs show manager. Becky is thrilled to be a piggy part of this piggy production and wishes you all a squealing good time!!

ROBERT KAUZLARIC (Author) is a

Chicago-based playwright, actor, and director. He has written more than a dozen theatrical adaptations which have been performed in nearly forty U.S. states, as well as in England, Ireland, and Canada. His adaptations include THE ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU (NonEquity Joseph Jefferson Awards: Best Production-Play and New Adaptation), THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY (Non-Equity Jeff Nomination: New Adaptation), NEIL GAIMAN’S NEVERWHERE (Non-Equity Jeff Award: New Adaptation), THE THREE MUSKETEERS (commissioned for the Illinois Shakespeare Festival), WILKIE COLLINS’S THE MOONSTONE and THE WOMAN IN WHITE, and a musical version of Jane Austen’s NORTHANGER ABBEY. For children, Mr. Kauzlaric has written musical adaptations of Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith’s THE TRUE STORY OF THE 3 LITTLE PIGS! composed original music for numerous shows at Lifeline Theatre in Chicago, including CROSSING CALIFORNIA, CAT’S CRADLE, MRS. PIGGLE-WIGGLE, PUSS IN BOOTS, BONGO LARRY AND TWO BAD BEARS, and THE TRUE STORY OF THE 3 LITTLE PIGS! By day, Paul is an elementary school music teacher. By night, he plays fiddle and keyboards for the country band Buck Cheaper and the Bargain Hunters.

WILLIAM RUSH (Author) A

bandmate to co-composer Paul Gilvary, and a student of the mystic arts, William Rush channels musical guides through the ether. A self-described “rhythmic sculptor,” his musical training started with the gift of an AM clock radio and ended with violin lessons at age 8.

PENELOPE CAYWOOD (Director/

Building better websites to help build a better community

Musical Director/Choreographer) has been the Artistic Director of University of Utah’s Youth Theatre program since 2006. Youth Theatre is a successful year-round performing arts training program for youth ages 4 to 18. Over 650 students train in drama annually and over 3500 elementary school students are bussed to see one of their production at Kingsbury Hall each year. She also directs the Youth Theatre Conservatory program for teens. This group of advanced students have been recognized for their original work in Utah, nationally and internationally. Through her Partners in Education collaboration (Salt Lake City School District and Kingsbury Hall) she has created a unique theatre-arts programs at multiple SLC Schools (Wasatch Elementary, Beacon Heights Elementary and Mountain View Elementary) in which she demonstrates drama strategies in the classroom, presents

WHO’S WHO scaffolded workshops to teachers, and assists in the implementation of drama as a teaching method. As this program has grown, Penelope has presented at numerous arts integration and teacher training workshops throughout Utah and other parts of the country. Because of her unique position at the University of Utah, Penelope also teaches integrated arts courses for pre-service teachers. She is also a Professional Development Partner for the Westminster College Region of the Beverly Taylor Sorenson Arts Learning Program. As a director and choreographer, Penelope has been involved with over forty productions along the Wasatch Front, including work with Rogers Memorial Theatre, Weber State, The Grand Theatre, Plan-B, the Egyptian Theatre, and SLAC. www.youththeatre.utah.edu www.teacherinthewings.com

THOMAS GEORGE (Scenic Design)

is a scenic designer and artist based in Salt Lake City. He currently teaches set design at the University of Utah and works on productions locally and around the world. He holds an MFA from UC San Diego and a BFA from the University of Utah. STEVEN GLENN BROWN (Puppet Design/Construction) is thrilled to be

working with SLAC for a fifth time. His most recent endeavor was as co-creator of the really really great big bear in MERCURY. Previously he co-created the puppets for HAND TO GOD, and designed, constructed the shadow puppets, and was one of the master puppeteers for BLACKBERRY WINTER. Additionally, he was the set designer for ART DOG. Glenn received his MFA from the University of Utah in Theatre, and a BA from Westminster College in Art. When he isn’t creating art, he is designing and building puppets, writing plays, and the Co-Artistic Director of the Theatre of Perpetual Non-Reality. Glenn works for the Granite School District as a BTS Arts Integration Coach. He is also a board member of the Great Salt Lake Fringe Festival.

LINDA L. BROWN (Puppet Design/

Construction) is excited to be working with Salt Lake Acting Company for the fifth time! Previously, Janice has worked at Park City’s Egyptian Theatre, Dark Horse Company Theatre, Plan-B, and Tuacahn Center for the Arts. In 2008 Janice was selected as a USITT Stage Management Mentee, where she stage managed THE HISTORY OF DRAG. JESSICA RUBIN (Assistant Costume

Design) is a senior at Westminster College pursuing her BA in Arts Administration with a focus in theatre. She’s excited to be working as a part of the University Professional Theatre Program. This past summer, she worked as the wardrobe supervisor at The Lyric Repertory Theatre in Logan, Utah. At Westminster College, she has had the opportunity to work backstage as a dresser in addition to costume designing multiple productions.

CYNTHIA FLEMING (Executive Artistic

Director) has been in the world of dance and theatre professionally since she was 18 years old, during which time she performed in the Broadway, National and International companies with A CHORUS LINE. Since 1995 she has worn many hats at SLAC, including Choreographer, Director, Box Office Manager and Director of Audience Services. She developed SLAC’s high quality customer service, which is the foundation for the record breaking number of subscribers. She conceived and created the position of Director of Communication and Audience Development which generated a renewed energy and excitement. In 2010 she became Co-Executive Producer and is honored to be SLAC’s Executive Artistic Director since 2015.

WHO’S WHO Cynthia remains a working artist in the theatre and has choreographed many SLAC productions including SATURDAY’S VOYEUR since 1995 and became the director/choreographer of SATURDAY’S VOYEUR in 2010. Cynthia was selected to be one of the directors at the MFA Playwrights’ Workshop at the Kennedy Center and is currently a visiting professor in the Musical Theatre Department at University of Utah. Cynthia was thrilled to serve as the honorary co-chair of The American Cancer Society Gala and is especially proud to serve SLAC and its mission to engage and enrich community through brave contemporary theatre.

For the eighth year running, we welcome students of all ages from the Visual Art Institute in Salt Lake City to exhibit in the Green Room Gallery during our children’s production — inspired by the school’s efforts to plant the seed of creative curiosity early in life.

Established in 1978, VAI encourages students to integrate their creativity into every aspect of their thinking, education and life, and provides exceptional visual art programs to elementary through high school students, including year-round classes and an intensive figurative workshop in the summer. VAI provides high-quality instruction and classes in a wide range of media focusing on essential applied skills, working largely from life, as well as conceptual thinking. Many VAI students go on to earn local, state, and national awards as well as entrance and scholarships to top universities and art schools throughout the country. You’ll find literature about the Visual Art Institute in the Gallery. Please stop in to enjoy the exhibition.
