Welcome

“Welcome to our house on Maple Avenue, see how we polish, how we shine.” ~Helen, FUN HOME

To produce FUN HOME at SLAC has been a themselves and each other. It’s a deeply dream of mine since I first heard the original moving, wonderfully funny and thoughtBroadway cast recording. provoking family musical for pretty much It’s hard to put into words what I was feeling anyone who has either been a child or a at our first rehearsal. Looking around the parent or a sibling—in other words, for all room, I was able to tell the cast, design team, of us. When we performed it in New York, and staff that dreams do come true and that audiences from every imaginable background they were proof of it. It was a significant and upbringing found deep connections and moment and we all knew we were a part of their own personal relationship to the story in ways no other play I know of can provide. something extremely special. It has no agenda other than compassion, and Michael Cerveris, who won the Tony Award I suppose, that is a radical thing to say these for Best Actor in a Musical for his portrayal of days. I’m delighted it’s going to be presented Bruce Bechdel in FUN HOME, visited Salt Lake for the first time by a local company in Acting Company while he was in town shooting Utah, and even more delighted to learn that a film. At that time, FUN HOME was a pipe company is Salt Lake Acting Company, who dream of mine and while giving him a tour of I know firsthand have the heart and skill to SLAC, I took him to the Upstairs Theatre and bring it to life for the Salt Lake community.” said, “This is where we will produce FUN HOME someday.” I reached out to Michael to let him Thank you, Michael. know that my FUN HOME dream had become Cheers to following your dreams, a reality. I asked him what his thoughts were Cynthia Executive Artistic Director about SLAC producing FUN HOME. He said, “I had the good fortune to be filming in Utah a bit ago, with a bit of free time to explore Salt Lake City. On a friend’s suggestion, I wandered into Salt Lake Acting Company, with admittedly low expectations, and was surprised, impressed and delighted by what I saw and learned. In the midst of Salt Lake, there is an adventurous, thoughtful and progressive theater company that respects its audience, acknowledges its neighbors, yet works to embrace everyone in its community and hopes to bring stories of compassion and different points of view to its curious, passionate and informed audiences. Their work isn’t always easy or comfortable, but it struck me as sincere, serious, and community centered. Their choice of FUN HOME couldn’t be more appropriate. As much as it is the true story of Alison Bechdel’s learning to understand and embrace her own sexual identity, the true heart of the story is the complex relationship between a father and daughter that struggle to understand

Director's Note I am thrilled to be directing the Utah premiere of FUN HOME at Salt Lake Acting Company. This will be the second time I have directed the work of Lisa Kron, having previously directed her play WELL. I became aware of, and a fan of, Lisa through a nonprofit organization I co-founded in New York called the Innovative Theatre Foundation, also known as the IT Awards, which celebrates and honors the history of the Off-Off-Broadway theatrical community. Lisa worked for years in Off-OffBroadway and was a great advocate for the artists and the artistry that came from that indie-theatre community. Because of her support, her integrity as an artist, and her innate talent, I have avidly followed her projects. When I heard that Lisa was working on creating a musical based on the incredible work of Alison Bechdel and partnering with the talented Jeanine Tesori, I jumped at the opportunity to see it. I was so moved by the story, the beautiful music, and the seamless combination of those elements. For me it was the best of what I had grown to love about Lisa’s work, but then completely new in that it was playing in a new theatrical form. And I was also so happy to see the hero of this musical be a lesbian. A groundbreaking Broadway first. FUN HOME owes part of its development legacy to the Sundance Theatre Lab in Utah and so it feels only appropriate that it should be returning to this area and to this community. Lisa has been a mentor for me in understanding how important it is that the communities we serve and exist in be respected and embraced. I hope with this production that all of us who are involved will be able to be of service to the work, to one another, and to the amazing community who comes to experience the show. Jason Bowcutt

InMeet ThetheRoom child actors of Fun Home Jack started taking classes with Youth Theatre at the U at the age of 6 after watching his sister take classes. His first show was Fiddler on the Roof. Matthew’s first show was at Terrace Plaza Playhouse in Ogden. At the age of 7 he played Tiny Tim in a Christmas Carol. Ava loved putting on plays for her family. Her first show was Fiddler on the Roof at Pioneer Theatre Company (2015). Oliver’s mother is a theatre historian at Weber State University. Oliver has often been seen on the Weber stage whenever the university needs a child actor. As a toddler, Natalia loved to run around the theatre while her mother was in rehearsals. She’s been enchanted by the theatre ever since. Presley was inspired to do theatre after watching her mother, Penny Caywood, teach her conservatory group with the Youth Theatre at the U. She wanted to be just like those actors and at the age of 6 she auditioned for Thumbelina. Merry: Why is this show important to you? Ava: It’s such a real story. I felt so connected to the story and Alison, she’s amazing. I love her so much. Presley: The way I connect to the show is I feel there’s a little bit of Alison that everybody can relate to. Oliver: When I was in New York with my mom, we actually saw the Broadway version. It was an actual house, with the audience all around it. It was almost more believable because you were more immersed into the world. Matthew: I think what really gets me every time is “Days and Days” where Helen’s talking about how she’s wasted her life because she knows Bruce has had all these affairs… This show strikes me so much on a personal level. I think this show will spread a lot of good messages. Merry: What kind of good messages are you hoping people will come away with? Matthew: I hope people leave being more open to the LGBTQ+ community. Natalia: It’s a really touching show. It showed my family that you can just be who you are. Presley: This show is really great because it’s finally a show in Utah that has a gay female starring as the lead. I hope people are more open to the LGBTQ+ community after seeing this. We’re all humans. Just love is different.

FUN HOME

Matthew: Oh and one more thing! I hope that people who are closeted can leave this show and feel more comfortable in their sexuality. Ava: It makes people more aware of what’s happening in other people’s lives. That some people are going through this stress and all this pain – Matthew: – that Bruce is going through. Merry: You don’t always see what’s on the surface. Especially with Bruce, no one knew what he was hiding inside. Presley: And this is a real story. This isn’t something that someone decided to make a musical about. Jack: Alison Bechdel, it’s her real story. Presley: I feel like if it was made up, people wouldn’t be as connected to the story. There’s an authentic heart to it. Merry: What is your favorite part of this process, and why? Ava: My favorite song is “Ring of Keys” because Young Alison is realizing that she is like this random person walking into a café. She doesn’t know what it is, she just knows that she’s somehow attached to her. Jack: I really like “Fun Home”, the choreography is fun. Matthew: Another really cool thing in the show, after the opening number, “Welcome to our House”, you find out that Alison’s dad killed himself. And this whole show, you see him, and you know he killed himself. And then at the end, when Alison says that this is their last conversation… There it is, the last time that she’s ever going to see him and neither of them know it, but the audience does. And that’s just so hard to watch. Jack: I just don’t think that Bruce has ever been happy. Ava: He’s basically been living a lie. Matthew: I think that being closeted eats him up. Presley: He doesn’t want to accept who he actually is. And that is the reason he’s so unhappy. Merry: Anything else you want to add? Jack: Let’s just keep talking about this show for another hour, I love this! Natalia: We should have our own talk show. Matthew: A podcast!

University Professional Theatre Program SLAC is delighted to partner with local universities to heighten theatre students’ educational experience by taking them out of the classroom and hiring them at a professional theatre. During FUN HOME we would like to welcome Ally Thieme, Gerard Black, Wilson Hicken, Stirling Brenna, and Mary-Helen Pitman as a part of the University Professional Theatre Program (UPTP).

I will gain a better understanding of the expectations of working in a professional theatre so that I can feel more confident designing my own shows in the future. It will also help me to improve my organization and time management skills as well as network with a variety of different people in my prospective field. - Ally Thieme | Assistant Costume Design | USU

I will get to tech outside of a school setting for the first time, which will give me a better idea of how the rest of my career will be like after I graduate. I will expand my knowledge of lighting instruments, become a better troubleshooter, and gain collaboration skills with other designers. - Gerard Black | Assistant Light Design | U of U

UPTP gives me insight into what aspects of my piano playing can be further developed, as well as the opportunity to observe an experienced music director. This allows me to develop my skills as a pianist and music director that I have been learning through my program and become more informed about my craft and art form overall. - Wilson Hicken | Rehearsal Pianist/Piano 1 | U of U

Through UPTP I will gain contacts, experience, and encounter new problems that I know will help me later in my career. I will gain a greater skill in model and set building, and be able to communicate my ideas in a concise manner. This also gives me an opportunity to gain critical experience needed for my field that I am not getting in school. -Stirling Brenna | Assistant Set Design | USU

There is nothing like the UPTP in Salt Lake! Being able to work and learn in a professional theatre company is a completely different experience from working in educational theatre. I’ve been training for years to work in professional theatre as an actor, and I’m so excited to put into practice what I’m learning in school. -Mary-Helen Pitman | Actor | U of U
