WELCOME Welcome to Salt Lake Acting Company’s 11th professional children’s play. We are very excited to have PETE THE CAT perform on our stage. Since SLAC Cat is Pete’s biggest fan, I thought I’d check in with her. What exactly is your position at Salt Lake Acting Company? Thank you, Cynthia. As SLAC’s Resident Theatre Cat, I take my job very seriously. My duties include greeting patrons before and after the show, prowling the walkway at night, keeping watch from my balcony, looking cute and cuddly in my house… just to name a few. What are your thoughts about Pete The Cat performing on SLAC’s stage? I’ve known Pete for years. He’s a cool cat with a great story to tell. I’m thrilled he gets to make his Utah theatre debut at *my* theatre! What’s your favorite part of PETE THE CAT? I love how Pete gives Jimmy Biddle confidence. He helps him realize that it’s okay to step out of your comfort zone, and that trying new things is fun. Do you have a favorite Pete The Cat book? The Perfect Pizza Party. One word: pizza. Is there anything else you’d like to add? I think it’s wonderful that SLAC is partnering with Salt Lake County Animal Services. It’s important to me to support my fellow furry friends. I’ve got a fabulous life here as a theatre cat. Food, water, a heated house, and the best patrons in the world. It’s my wish that everyone brings canned cat food to donate to the cats that are less fortunate than I. Oh, yes! Follow me on Instagram @slac_cat. Thank you SLAC Cat! Oh, and if you see SLAC Cat, give her a fancy wave from afar. She does not like to be touched, as her bright white fur is her best accessory. Wishing you love and light for the holidays, Cynthia Executive Artistic Director

Title I Arts Education Program Now entering its second decade, SLAC’s Title I Arts Education Program invites over 2,000 underserved K-2 students from Title I schools to attend our annual children’s show free of charge. Children between the ages of 5 and 7 are at a critical developmental stage to absorb arts experiences. They are endlessly forging new connections- reading the book in anticipation of the show, sitting in the chairs as the lights go down, clapping and cheering with the crowd, processing the experience with their friends, teachers, and families- each step expands their thinking, brings what they are learning in school to life in dynamic and stimulating ways, and ultimately promotes deep engagement in the learning process. In his response to PINKALICIOUS, a Kindergarten teacher pointed out the program’s educational value: “This kind of experience contributes to my students’ desire and capacity to pay purposeful attention, observe carefully and mindfully, envision what can’t be observed, to be brave and take risks, and to understand others viewpoints and respect differences. Arts education fosters habits of mind that lead to success.” –Jeremy Reynoso, Meadowlark Elementary.

IN THE ROOM WITH
DIRECTOR PENELOPE CAYWOOD
PENNY: So, you’ve been to a couple of PETE THE CAT rehearsals. What do you think? PRESLEY: I like the show. I think it’s very interesting. PENNY: “Interesting” is what you say when you can’t think of something nice. You hate it. PRESLEY: No! I like it. I just don’t have the words to describe it. It’s really … upbeat. PENNY: That’s the same thing you said about PINKALICIOUS last year. PRESLEY: Well, PINKALICIOUS was a different kind of upbeat. Every kid show you do is different so I can’t compare them. PENNY: Can you try? PRESLEY: Okay. I think that every song in PETE THE CAT has a lot of energy and you can tell that the actors put their all into it. The person playing Pete (Jacob) is so cool … I mean, really, and Cameron (who plays Olive) is so funny … the whole cast is great. I can think of other words to describe them. PENNY: So what would you say the show is about? PRESLEY: It’s about a stray cat who likes to play the guitar and learns how to love. PENNY: That’s how you see it? PRESLEY: Yes. It’s my simplified version of the story. It’s pretty cheesy if you think about it. Hey! I got 100% on my math test. PENNY: That’s great, but it’s late. Can we finish this interview? PRESLEY: Sorry. PENNY: Why do you think kids should go to the theatre? PRESLEY: Going to the theatre makes them fundamentally better humans. Did I use that word correctly? PENNY: When something is fundamental it’s like a building block - something that’s essential -

& HER DAUGHTER, PRESLEY PRESLEY: I was right. It fundamentally makes kids better. Kids learn manners when they go to the theatre and have to watch other people perform in front of them. It’s not just parents telling kids to be quiet. The room makes you want to listen. PENNY: What should people look out for when they come to see the show? PRESLEY: The props are very detailed. It looks like the properties designer spent a lot of time making each one. In the choreography, there are a few moves from old shows that you threw in for the adults. Like from that Gold Show. PENNY: You mean, Solid Gold? PRESLEY: Yeah. And then that other show about Magic? PENNY: You’re talking about Magic to Do from PIPPIN. PRESLEY: That’s it. PIPPIN. PENNY: I do simplify a recognizable move from that show’s original choreographer, Bob Fosse. PRESLEY: (sings) We’ve got magic to do just for you. We’ve got miracle plays to play. PENNY: What’s your favorite musical number? PRESLEY: My favorite number is VW Bus. It’s so funny and I like that it’s a long number. Cameron and Shelby kill that number. It’s hilarious. (sings) Pete, Pete, talking bout Pete. Oh, yeah, that’s it. That’s all I can say. (sings) We’ve got magic to do just for you. We’ve got miracle plays to play. We’ve got parts to perform. Hearts to warm …

FEBRUARY 5 – MARCH 8, 2020 Nora Helmer leaving her husband at the end of Ibsen’s 1879 masterpiece was the “door slam heard ‘round the world.” Fifteen years later, there’s a knock at that same door. Nora’s back. But why? And where has she been? Lucas Hnath’s scintillating answer to Ibsen’s classic was nominated for 8 Tony Awards and now it’s coming to SLAC.

UNIVERSITY PROFESSIONAL THEATRE PROGRAM This industry thrives on eager people working as interns. It’s always beneficial to work in a new venue and meet new people. I’m excited to learn from everyone and establish new professional relationships. – Jess Wallace, UPTP Assistant Costume Designer
I want to learn about the depth of an artistic process and what goes into the world of a show/play, as well as the kind of work and research directors do. I envision it helping my career to network and gain more connections in the Salt Lake theatre community. The skills I will learn will help me be a better actor, artist, and future director in the professional industry. – Sydney Stephan, UPTP Assistant Director I will be gaining hands-on experience at one of the top regional theaters in the state. Working on this caliber of production is a phenomenal addition to my resume, and being able to gain this experience while still in school is a great head start. – Jacob Weitlauf, Actor
I will gain knowledge that will further my professional acting career and a better understanding of real world theatre surrounded by professionals. – Cameron Aragon, Actor

Green Room Gallery For the tenth year running, we welcome students of all ages from the Visual Art Institute in Salt Lake City to exhibit in the Green Room Gallery during our children’s production — inspired by the school’s efforts to plant the seed of creative curiosity early in life. Established in 1978, VAI encourages students to integrate their creativity into every aspect of their thinking, education and life, and provides exceptional visual art programs to elementary through high school students, including year-round classes and an intensive figurative workshop in the summer. VAI provides high-quality instruction and classes in a wide range of media focusing on essential applied skills, working largely from life, as well as conceptual thinking. Many VAI students go on to earn local, state, and national awards as well as entrance and scholarships to top universities and art schools throughout the country. You’ll find literature about the Visual Art Institute in the Gallery. Please stop in to enjoy the exhibition.
