Welcome

New solar panels made possible by a Rocky Mountain Power Blue Sky Funding Grant and installed by Creative Energies. Welcome! We can’t think of a better way to finish our season than with SATURDAY'S VOYEUR 2014 and all of our stellar subscribers and fantastic friends. This play belongs to you, our audience. It is written for you and you own it. As a theatre company it is a gift to watch our audience become so engaged and laugh so so hard. Our season subscription campaign is in high gear, with a goal of 2,800 subscribers for next season. We thank all of you who have renewed and welcome our new subscribers. In 2011 SLAC's Board recognized how this beautiful historic building is a huge part of the SLAC experience. SLAC's volunteer Board loves this theatre and is passionate and committed to ensure that this 'jewel in our community' continues to thrive. We are forever grateful. Acting on their vision, the past season has included many upgrades to ensure that our Marmalade Hills Building, the Historic 19th Ward, is a sustainable home for SLAC. With a design donated from NJRA Architects, we remodeled our lobby, adding an ADA accessible restroom. Each theatre now has new seats – which we were able to install due to the generous support of our audience members – and new stage lights which were funded by Fidelity Investments. The upstairs theatre has a new heating, ventilation and air conditioning system thanks to Salt Lake County’s Cultural Facilities Program. We can now offer a brand-new assisted-listening system as well. Our newest addition is the large solar panel array on our roof. With the support of Rocky Mountain Power’s Blue Sky Program, Mike Walton and the Creative Energies team were able to install these panels. We hope to set an example for our community about what can be accomplished to support and sustain our environment. This season has been an amazing success. Sold-out shows. Expanded outreach. New partnerships. The words 'thank you' aren't enough to express how much we appreciate you. Our very best! Cynthia and Keven Executive Producers

SLAC’s New Play Sounding Series presents a free reading of

BANG-BANG (PAUSE) BANG By Larry West Monday, August 11 at 7:00 PM There’s a menacing bang-bang (pause) bang coming from Sheriff Rikki Gonzales’ Tuff Shed...she desperately needs help! So, who does she turn to? Why, the Farmdale Arts Committee (F-ARTS)...isn’t that who you would call in a time of community crisis? Duh! Ill-prepared and woefully inept, F-ARTS soldiers on amid harrowing obstacles – handpuppets, shopping carts and aliens (the UFO kind) – to resolve the mystery of the ‘bangbang (pause) bang.’ WE thank the Jarvis and Constance Doctorow Family Foundation for their support of this vital program.

and in Plan-B’s productions MAMA, A VERSION OF EVENTS, and RUFF. A special thank you to: SLAC for letting me be a part of this historic show this year. My very supportive family who shows me love no matter what I do or who I am. My close friends (SCTJAKKN) who inspire, accept, and challenge me. To Andra, Jerry, Matt, Dave, Chris, and Brad who remind me that theater/ music/art does change lives and can change the world. And last, but not least, to my incredible cast, band, and crew who are people I respect and learn so much from. “All my love, peace, and light to you all.”

HAYDEN WARZEK

is beyond excited to make his SLAC debut in SATURDAY’S VOYEUR! Hayden was born and raised in Austin, Texas and is currently a junior in the Musical Theatre Program at the University of Utah. You might have seen him locally in SHE LOVES ME (Babcock Theatre), FAME! (The Grand Theatre) or in ONCE UPON A MATTRESS (Salt Lake Shakespeare). Last summer he played Lewis in The Long Center’s production of PIPPIN, in Austin, Texas. He would like to thank his friends, family and teachers for their continued support in each and every production he has been involved with through the years, and hopes everyone enjoys SATURDAY’S VOYEUR!

GAR ASHBY (Guitar) has been a key member of the VOYEUR Band for the past 4 summers. Gar is a lifelong musician specializing in rock, country and blues. Learn more about Gar atgarashby.com. 22 saltlakeactingcompany.org

Who’s Who DAVID EVANOFF (Drums) was previously Musical Director for BLOODY BLOODY ANDREW JACKSON, GO DOG GO and BAT BOY THE MUSICAL here at SLAC as well as ten years with SATURDAY’S VOYEUR as Musical Director and cast member. Other rocking musical direction credits include HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH, Plan B Theatre. HAIR, TOMMY, JESUS CHRIST SUPER STAR & THE FULL MONTY for The Egyptian Theatre and A SNOW WHITE MUSICAL, for Lythgoe Family Productions. David owns and operates David Evanoff Sound Designs Studios where he records and produces music for albums, film, TV and special events. ALLEN NEVINS (Playwright, Lyricist)

has been writing for SATURDAY’S VOYEUR the last 24 years. He came to the Salt Lake Acting Company in 1989 as the Literary Manager and in 1990 he formed a writing and business partnership with Nancy Borgenicht. In 1993, their partnership, Saturday’s Voyeur, Inc., became the management company and the Executive Producers of the Salt Lake Acting Company, for which they received the UAF Mayors Award for the Performing Arts and also the Governor’s Award for the Arts. As Executive Producers they expanded and re-built the Upstairs Theatre, designed and built the Chapel Theatre as an alternative performing space, unionized SLAC’s acting pool and re-instituted SATURDAY’S VOYEUR as the annual summer fundraiser for the Salt Lake Acting Company. After 35 years Saturday’s Voyeur remains an outlet for discourse, dissent, irreverent humor, cheap shots at elected officials; and of course, political incorrectness in all its forms.

NANCY BORGENICHT (Lyricist) has been part of Salt Lake Acting Company since 1974. She served as Co-Executive Producer with Allen Nevins from

University Professional Theatre Program SLAC is delighted to partner with local universities to heighten theatre students’ educational experience by taking them out of the classroom and hiring them at a professional theatre. We are excited to welcome University of Utah students Jaron Barney, Olivia Custodio, Leah Hassett, Connor Norton and Hayden Warzek, as part of the University Professional Theatre Program.

“It’s such an amazing experience to work at a professional theatre company and learn what it really means to be a professional actor while still in school. There’s no better training than the real deal! I love working at SLAC and am so thankful for the opportunity!” -Leah Hassett “I have found during my time in school that there is nothing that teaches me more than real world experience in theatre. The skills that we pick up in rehearsals and performances with professional acting companies are ones that we will carry with us throughout our careers. Being able to put classroom skills into practice in a professional setting is an amazing opportunity for us. As we prepare to make a living in this competitive fi eld, we are grateful for the advantage we are given from working with this company.” -Jaron Barney UPTP Sudents Leah Hassett, Jaron Barney, Olivia Custodio,

Hayden Warzek and Connor Norton

“Voyeur is my debut into the Salt Lake City theater community and let me tell you, this debutante wouldn't have it any other way. Being a part of the SLAC family is absolutely incredible. Coming from an operatic world I was a little nervous to dip a toe into the musical theater side of things, but SLAC welcomed me with open arms. The School of Music at the University of Utah, where I'm pursuing my Masters in Vocal Performance, has prepared me well for my adventures as a performer and I'm so lucky to be able to continue to learn from my fantastic colleagues in Voyeur throughout the summer. Every person at SLAC is such an incredible colleague and I think it's pretty safe to say that I am head-over-heels in love with this company!” -Olivia Custodio “I personally could not be more thrilled to be working at SLAC. It’s one thing to take classes and learn about the industry, but nothing in the classroom can compare to professional rehearsals, work weeks and shows. I’m a person who “learns by doing,” so I am very grateful to be in an acting position in this company as a junior.” -Hayden Warzek “I’m very excited to be working with SLAC again. They have given me so many opportunities and expanded my theatre education far beyond the classroom. They not only create a professional environment, but also one that is tons of fun!” -Connor Norton

Band Kevin Mathie and The All Gentile Band Local Boys with attitude. Dead Docent One of the walking wounded, a mumpsimus Judgmental, bristling with middle class Mormon moral indignation. She was pronounced dead after confusing her stun gun with her cell phone, whereupon, her heart was removed and donated to Dick Cheney. As a ghost, she wanders in the bowels of Temple Square with Moroni and Joseph Smith. She has taken it upon herself to rehabilitate Moroni who she perceives as having a substance abuse problem. The last thing she saw before her unfortunate demise was the Disney movie Frozen. Gayle “God-zicka” An unpleasant woman Her day job, president of the Utah Eagle Quorum, allows her to control everything in the Legislature that the LDS Church doesn’t. Moroni A golden statue hit by lightning, a cross between Robert Kirby and Ferris Bueller A man with a paunch and a burnt spot over his heart, and a selfmedicating, stoned musician who wanted to play saxophone but was told by his mother that a man with a sax wouldn’t look good on top of a temple. Mike Lee Arrogant, entitled, asshole politician Interns Chorus boys from BOOK OF MORMON: THE MUSICAL A gay couple, ex-members, who were literally chorus boys from BOOK OF MORMON: THE MUSICAL. They were hired because of their sexual orientation and because they would work for health insurance. They are issued egregious fat pads as participants in Elder M’s and Brother Fletch’s Let’s Get It Straight! social engineering program. Docents Blue haired, conservative, volunteer worker bees Very pleasant grey haired tour guides and sweet old bigots who accept their “Sister roles” in the Church. Generally, they spew the “Church” Republican line, often blurring the distinction between the two as is so common in Utah. Sister Babes [Interns] Girls who are earnest but not very bright. After some misadventure with Nephi in his font they rededicate their lives to the three M’s, modesty, mission and marriage. Lesbian Sisters Girls with very unfortunate shoes Recruited as brides for gay chorus boys and part of the work-study experiment, Let’s Get It Straight! Elder Marriott The ‘Big Gulp’ and Scout Czar A large man, who wears a black suit and is on the down low with his personal assistant, Fletch. He also sponsors his own social engineering program Let’s Get It Straight! A pathetic attempt to make gay people straight, which not surprisingly hasn’t worked on himself. After his mission, Scouting was the best two years of his life.

Sister Marriott Elder Marriott’s Wife A vibrant, liberated woman who won’t wear a skirt to church for political reasons. She hates the culture of obedience, tries to get even with the patriarchal power structure whenever possible and never misses a chance to define the Church as “The Corporation...” of Jesus Christ. A sustaining member of the Ordain Women Organization. Fletch Elder M’s Personal Assistant The gatekeeper for Elder Marriott and an underling of the Correlations Committee, a semi-secretive body that decides doctrine and policy for everything “Church,” he hides behind intimidating dark glasses and has hair like former Olympic skater, Johnny Weir. An example of what we become if not allowed to be who we really are. Nephi Jensen Weekend Proxy Baptism Co-ordinator for Youth A nerd nicknamed The Bapteezer who uses the baptismal font as his personal dating tool and, if allowed to, would wear his baptismal ‘white wear’, like they do scrubs on ER. Otherwise, he wears the C.O.B. uniform with big, black-framed glasses that he constantly has to push up. Elder Elder A “liberal” member of the 1st Presidency An ancient democrat with no filters and no patience for stupidity. Joseph Smith The young man who started it all and now lives only in a forgotten diorama somewhere in the basement of Temple Square. MoPhilia Daughter of Elder and Sister Marriott A black woman, coming to grips with her dissembling father, her own ethnicity and the discovery of the Church’s racist past. Kendra Miss Riverton, a Beauty Queen A feminista, who does forced community service at the C.O.B. for making bombs with household chemicals. She has enormous fake breasts and wears the kind of heavy black shoes that are meant to scare men.

Green Room Gallery

O

ur Green Room Gallery is a collective endeavor between community and artists. This space allows us to offer a variety of diverse visual perspectives from local artists based on inspiration found from themes raised onstage. In keeping with SLAC’s mission to nurture our local, creative community, we celebrate these reinforcements born between the visual and performing arts. All sales go directly to the exhibiting artist. Throughout the run of SATURDAY’S VOYEUR 2014 we are beyond thrilled to present work by painter Brad Slaugh. Brad Slaugh earned an MFA from Boston University, where he graduated with honors and received the Kahn Fellowship in 1995. He has taught at various colleges and universities and currently teaches at Salt Lake Community College. Brad is the founder and Director of Poor Yorick Studios, a community of over 50 working artists in South Salt Lake, which opens its doors to the public only twice a year for the Equinox Open Studios, an event he has spearheaded since 2002. He has also taken several groups to France, and was recently voted one of Utah’s 15 Most Influential Artists by The Utah Division of Arts & Museums.

Saturday’s Voyeur 2014

“I work in several ways, all of them representational but not strictly realist. My work focuses on immediate response and tactile exploration of form and color, as well as on exploring the cluttered tragicomedy that is an enduring feature of modernity.”
