Welcome Welcome to the world premiere of SILENT DANCER! This production exemplifies the risk-taking theatrical spirit that SLAC is known for. It truly is a creation born out of SLAC and I hope it will have a continued life. I couldn’t be more proud to be part of a theatre company that fosters the development of a new artform such as this. Believe me when I say, you’re about to witness something you’ve never seen before. And why are we able to take a risk with theatre such as this? You. Every time I visit other theatres across the nation, I find myself missing SLAC’s audience. It is YOU who empower us to do the work we do and the spirit in which we do it. It is you who have entrusted us to bring you theatre that inspires, captivates, challenges, and empowers. Since being brought on staff in 1998, I have had the honor of serving SLAC’s subscriber base. As my role has evolved over the years, I have operated under one constant motto: our subscribers are the lifeblood of this theatre. As we celebrate the magic of SILENT DANCER and the excitement of our upcoming 49th season, we look forward to you renewing your subscription—or welcoming you as a subscriber for the first time. My staff and I are honored to serve you. We hope you enjoy this performance. Thank you for making it possible. Cynthia Executive Artistic Director

IN THE ROOM

Kathleen Cahill & Cynthia Fleming You two have wanted to collaborate for some time. How and when did SILENT DANCER come about? CF: That’s right! I adore Kathleen and her play CHARM, which we produced at Salt Lake Acting Company in 2010. A few years after that, I found myself in New York seeing SLEEP NO MORE--an immersive retelling of MACBETH at the McKittrick Hotel. As I saw this wildly popular theatre piece, I realized that it was actually a work of modern dance. I found myself loving it, but at the same time, I wanted more words! That was the seed of the idea, but the creation of this world should really be credited to Kathleen. Once we had more of a concept, we approached Christopher Ruud to choreograph. I was a huge fan of his father’s and I followed Christopher’s career at Ballet West very closely. When I heard that he was retiring, I had what—at the time—I thought was a far-fetched idea to bring him on board. I didn’t expect him to say yes, but when he did, I was floored. He was the missing piece we needed to make this Jazz Age world move. KC: I wanted to work with Cynthia from the moment I met her. I don’t have a dance background, but I’m one of those people with my nose pressed up against the window of the dance studio watching and thinking wow, it’s all so wonderful. Then about four years ago I started thinking about New York City in the 1920s, a period of great social change in America, quite like our time. Issues around women, immigration, and marginalized groups were prominent. Then of course you had Zelda and Scott Fitzgerald with whom America has always had this fascination. I read Beautiful and the Damned, Fitzgerald’s second novel–which was not a success–but it was there I found the inspiration to write a play about their maid. Around the same time, I saw this choreographed piece at Ballet West in which dancers and people from the audience were walking across the stage at the same time. When the dancers started to dance, the audience continued walking and I was struck by the stark difference between the two movements. When you’re dancing your body is moving in this completely different way than when you’re walking; it’s expressing so much more. I have a master’s degree in writing musical theatre and we were always taught when a character sings it’s because the emotion is at its highest intensity. So, I thought what if instead of singing the characters were to dance? What if the dialogue was communicated through a heightened state of physical expression instead of words?

Kathleen, were there specific challenges you faced in writing this play that you haven’t faced with other scripts? KC: There were so many challenges. It’s sort of like doing something like signing up for the military where you think yes, I’ll do that, and it turns out to be really scary and difficult. Then Cynthia and I went to dinner with Christopher Ruud, who I really wanted to work with. At that time the love story in the script between

14

Rosie and Perry just said, they dance, and I remember Christopher saying he wanted to know exactly what they were saying in the dance. He and Cynthia agreed they needed dialogue. So, I went away for a week by myself and I wrote all this passionate language that was going to be choreographed instead of spoken. The script now has these big highlighted sections of dialogue that are meant to be communicated through dance.

Cynthia, this is the first play outside of SATURDAY’S VOYEUR you’ve directed at SLAC. Can you speak to your experience of that? CF: It’s true, I typically only direct SATURDAY’S VOYEUR--given my long history with the show and [authors] Al and Nancy. I believe in giving other local talent a chance to direct our mainstage shows, but, as SILENT DANCER is something I co-conceived, there is a driving force in me to see it fully-realized. SILENT DANCER was also the first time I directed one of our New Play Sounding Series readings!

Kathleen, can you talk about how the play has evolved? KC: Because this is a groundbreaking way to tell a story, Cynthia and I felt we needed to workshop the play to really see how we were going to move from dialogue into dance and back out again. We did workshops with Christopher in which we worked specifically on that idea as well as the exploration of how these characters move. For example, what does our criminal in the play, “Legs” Diamond’s movement look like compared to that of Rosie or Michael’s? We also learned what needed to be said to make the story successful and ended up trimming a lot of the play. We did five workshops of the play including SLAC’s Playwrights’ Lab and New Play Sounding Series, as well as a workshop at B Street Theatre in Sacramento.

What else do want us to know about the play? KC: So why do this play set in 1920? I think it’s important to understand the issues of then and now are very similar. The struggle of belonging to a marginalized group in this country is still relevant. But I also think there have been triumphs. Progress is the long arc of justice Martin Luther King talked about. In a lot of ways things are the same, but we’re also moving ahead. CF: What SLAC audiences are seeing is a new artform that has received a lot of care and support. Our workshops have allowed us to determine if the concept would even work at all. The focus at that stage was mastering the dance language. Giving SILENT DANCER the opportunity of a full production has allowed us to more fully explore the depth of the characters, and the special, almost fantastical universe in which the story resides. As the process has continued over the past few years, I’ve also paid more attention to the way women have been previously portrayed onstage, particularly in period pieces. I realized that for so long, we’ve been viewing women through the eyes of male authors. I think what Kathleen has done--particularly with Rosie and Zelda--is extraordinary.
