WELCOME
Throughout history, the arts have helped humanity translate experiences when words alone do not suffice. The arts have been, and continue to be, present when we need them the most. Orchestral music and Opera hold a moment in time and tell rich and moving stories that resonate with new and long-time listeners alike. Music is in our collective past, present, and future.
Steven Brosvik President & CEO
During this unique time in our history, Utah Symphony | Utah Opera has found creative ways to continue connecting our community through great music. Your support helped us initiate safely distanced live performances from September through November, pivot to streamed performances when our venues were closed to live audiences in December, and create new online music education offerings distributed throughout our state via the Utah Education Network. This moment will reaffirm that, even (perhaps especially) in times of turmoil, we all recognize the importance of preserving our access to the arts. This season would not have been possible without the incredible generosity of the community leaders and donors recognized in the donor pages of this program. Another important pillar of our community has stepped forward to help us deepen and broaden our support to ensure that USUO can continue to create great music well into the future. All new and increased contributions received through May 1, 2021, will be matched 1:1 by the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation. With this announcement, the Foundation Trustees express optimism for a bright future filled with uplifting musical experiences, and encourage the community at large to participate with them in supporting Utah Symphony | Utah Opera. Please visit usuo.org/donate to learn more. While our world has changed, the power of music and its vital place in our lives has not. Thank you for joining us today to demonstrate the importance of USUO in your life.

NOTES ON THE PROGRAM By Micheal Clive
André Jolivet (1905–1974)
Suite en concert for flute and four percussionists Born in the Montmartre section of Paris, André Jolivet was the son of an artist father and pianist mother. His own interest in the arts emerged early, and at age 14 he began studying the cello and painting. His parents—perhaps because of their firsthand knowledge of the difficulties of the artist’s life—encouraged him to become a teacher, but his music instructors believed he had a future in music, and so did André himself. From his earliest youth André regarded his music as a strong affirmation of his ardent non-conformism “It’s an attitude I’ve held to, come what may, one that will perhaps allow me in the future to express, in a way no less independently, but, I hope, more perfectly, the new relationships in sound which I am aware of and which I see are going to emerge.” Throughout his life Jolivet remained faithful to this goal. Paul Le Flem, Jolivet’s first composition teacher, imbued him with a firm grounding in classical forms. Later exposure to the work of Arnold Schoenberg piqued Jolivet’s interest in more modern tonal techniques of composition, and he eventually became the sole European student of the influential modernist Edgard Varèse. These disparate influences are borne out in the wide range of Jolivet’s output, comprising

more than 200 works. We can also hear in them the unique, almost mystical power that Jolivet accorded to the art of music itself: From the time of Mana (1935) to La Flèche du temps (1974), he expressed the need “to give back to music its original ancient meaning, when it was the magical, incantatory expression of the religious beliefs of human groups.” Although Jolivet had no desire to found a school, he felt the need to write a kind of music that addressed itself to mankind in general. He sought to combine humanism and universalism. Jolivet’s Suite en concert, also known as his second concerto (for flute), was composed at the behest of the eminent French flutist Jean-Pierre Rampal. Rampal had performed Jolivet’s first flute concerto so many times that he finally requested a second concerto from Jolivet. Clearly inspired by the challenge, Jolivet produced a work that flutists everywhere value as one of the most fascinating compositions in the repertory. Devotees of Jolivet’s music note that his choice of instruments is extremely significant: He cherished both flute and percussion as being instruments very near to the “primal” senses and origin of music he saw as essential. The Suite is technically challenging to play. It stretches the limits of the percussion instruments as well as the flute with a rhythmic structure that is unusual and intricate. The sound has been characterized as primitive in character, giving rise to an almost frenzied energy; but it may be more accurate to describe this as the deep, “primal” sense

NOTES ON THE PROGRAM
of music’s origins that Jolivet pursued throughout his career as a composer. In this inner sense of the music in our blood and bones, Jolivet’s listeners hear the unique sound of genius. Ludwig van Beethoven (1770–1827)
Symphony No. 1 in C Major Music scholars—in fact, historians of all sorts—love to divide lives and eras into threes, and in Beethoven’s case, this practice began when he was still alive and has endured to the present day. But when it comes to his Symphony No. 1, generally categorized as “early Beethoven,” we learn more by considering that this important work came at the beginning of a new century. More than just the calendar was changing. Beethoven was 29 when he composed this symphony, in 1799 and 1800, and it represents the start of something new and epochal for him: his foray into symphonic form. His teachers Haydn and Mozart were masters of the symphony, and in his first attempt, Beethoven paid homage to their mastery while daring to innovate. It’s no secret that Beethoven chafed under Haydn’s instruction, and we can well imagine that Beethoven’s questing, rebellious artistic spirit might have clashed with Haydn’s statesmanlike formalism. Beethoven reserved his first efforts at the string quartet and the symphony, the two forms for which Haydn was most noted, for the very end of his “early” period, by which time he was fully confident of his
composing skills and his unique voice. In his Symphony No. 1, Beethoven was keen to demonstrate his full command of the symphonic form as Haydn had used it, while broadening the form in scope and artistic ambition. During his lifetime, Beethoven—along with the German writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe—became one of the two most celebrated cultural figures in continental Europe. In 1800, though already famous, he had not yet reached that level of celebrity. But his first symphony was definitely a step in that direction. Contemporary critics immediately recognized it as something new and important, hailing its beauty and originality. One contemporary Viennese critic called the symphony “a masterpiece that does equal honor to [Beethoven’s] inventiveness and his musical knowledge. Being just as beautiful and distinguished in its design as its execution, there prevails in it such a clear and lucid order, such a flow of the most pleasant melodies, and such a rich, but at the same time never wearisome, instrumentation that this symphony can justly be placed next to Mozart’s and Haydn’s.” Considering the sense of grace and courtliness that prevails as we listen, it may be surprising to note that for some ears, Beethoven’s innovativeness was a little too bold. For example, the first movement opens with the dominant chord that moves to the subdominant…a little harmonic adventure that piques our curiosity before resolving into the tonic Continued on page 24…

name.” Beethoven surprises us again with the final movement, which opens with a stately adagio that shows no signs of going anywhere, then suddenly opens onto a brisk and bubbling finale.
For today’s listeners, this startling introduction has the opposite effect, opening our ears and sweeping us headlong into the onrush of music. And while the second movement begins with more traditional reserve—violins singing an elegant theme—Beethoven soon steps up the energy and then keeps it at a higher-than-customary level, whisking us along with a quick-stepping minuet. According to one present-day musicologist, it is “a scherzo in all but
“Early” Beethoven? Arguably, yes: This symphony shows the composer’s deference to the Classical style and the teachers who imparted it to him. But it also reveals the boldness of artistic spirit and the originality through which he would eventually leave Classicism behind, reinventing the symphony for future generations. The craft he honed in his “early” symphonies would eventually enable Beethoven to make the great philosophical statements of his later ones.

PLANNED GIVING
SUPPORT GREAT LIVE MUSIC IN OUR COMMUNITY WITH A GIFT TO THE ANNUAL FUND Please join our wonderful Utah Symphony | Utah Opera family of donors who sustain great live music in our community. As a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, USUO is thankful for your generosity that supports our musicians, singers, artisans, crew and staff. Your gift now will make an impact as we plan for the future. The CARES Act has enacted new rules around charitable giving. The bill makes a new charitable deduction available for up to $300 per taxpayer, regardless of whether you itemize your deductions. Furthermore, if you do itemize, you may elect to deduct qualified contributions of up to 100% of your adjusted gross income in 2020. Please consult your tax advisor or financial planner to determine the impact of CARES Act changes on your personal tax situation.
CONSIDER USUO IN YOUR ESTATE PLANNING We never know what the future holds, but our eyes have been opened to how crucial planning ahead is. The pandemic has caused many of us to contemplate our legacy, assess our priorities, and plan for the future. Perhaps now more than ever, we recognize how important and meaningful it is to have a place where we can gather as a community to be uplifted and inspired by great music. If you want to ensure the future legacy of Utah Symphony | Utah Opera for future audiences to enjoy, please include USUO in your estate planning.

UTAH SYMPHONY GUILD OUR MISSION
Because we believe great music can elevate the human spirit, the purpose of the Guild is to foster, promote, and facilitate the operation of the Utah Symphony Orchestra financially, socially, and educatonally. It is our honor to maintain a gift shop throughout the year which raises funds for our orchestra. We have added all our available items to the “online store” and all proceeds go to USUO. We will continue adding events as social distancing requirements allow to aid in rasing funds for our great orchestra. We will sponsor the Youth Guild and outreach violin lessons again this season, and we appreciate your ongoing support of these important community programs. To join or renew your membership in the guild you may go to our web page and fill out the new members information. www.utahsymphonyguild.org Carolyn Abravanel Eva-Maria Adolphi Wendy Ajax Fran & Tom Akimoto Georgia L.
