Director’s Note

Dear Odyssey Patron,

Welcome to Odyssey’s 26th and final year of Thriller. And what an odyssey it’s been!

In 1994, I saw that there was this huge pool of talented dancers here who could do everything –ballet, jazz, tap, hip-hop, ballroom – and would be working regularly if they had decided to move to New York or L.A. I thought it was a shame to see that talent go to waste. And Dance Theatre was born. My concept was to start small and then build up as we could afford. Since we were the new kids on the block, funding was pretty much nonexis tent. We relied on ticket sales to make our way. I knew we needed a large show that would be like a ‘Nutcracker’ for ballet companies, something that would bring a large audience in, and significant income. That’s where Thriller came in; we created an amazing show from a series of Halloween-themed vignettes, and it has become a smash hit.

I believe the thing that has made Thriller unique is that we have taken all of your favorite Halloween characters and placed them into different tongue-in-cheek settings and contexts. There is a lot of humor in the show, and nothing is left out, from Jason impersonations, to skeletons, to the use of chain saws. When we first produced this show, we had sold only 50 tickets for four mere performances

four days away from opening. So I decided if I was going to go down - I was going to go down in flames!  I knew there was something special about what we were doing - and felt word of mouth might be good - and it was!  Within two years we were selling out!

For years now, we have performed the show in five or more Utah locations with more than 45,000 patrons in attendance; for several years, we even had two companies simultaneously performing in multiple locations.

Although we have done new pieces in the show every year, it is amazing how many of the original pieces we put together still remain the staples of the production.

It has supplied the funding for the rest of the season which, in addition to Thriller, included Joy to the World, The ReduxNut-Cracker and It’s a Wonderful Life. The Spring Repertory Season Shut Up and Dance has been a dance lover’s buffet with something for everyone.

After a 28-year mission of providing a space for talented dancers to stay in our home state of Utah, as well as attracting talent from all over the world to Utah and creating new and innovative works, Cheryl and I will be onto the next ‘mission’ in our lives, serving a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Thank you for making our dream a reality and supporting us all of these years. Read on to find out what’s next for Odyssey.

Receiving the Best Show of the Year and Season Award in Unterfoehring, Germany 13. Garnering world wide recognition when 9 Odyssey dancers made it to the top 10 of Hit TV Show So You Think You Can Dance 14. Earning 80% of its revenue from ticket sales You take all of that and continue the legacy! When Odyssey Dance Theatre closes its doors on performing at the end of Thriller, it will open them again as the Odyssey Dance Theatre Foundation. Our mission will be to make dance accessible to young people who would not normally experience the magic of dance, by granting dance scholarships (watch our website for upcoming information about our grant making procedure). If you want to continue the odyssey with us, please consider making a gift to Odyssey Dance Theatre Foundation to help underwrite dance scholarships to young people who would not normally have the opportunity to experience the magic of dance. Your donation is tax deductible to the extent of the law and your donation will be recognized on the Odyssey Dance Theatre Foundation website: www.odysseydance.com 9tuacahn fall concerts 2022

Suzie

Balser(Lorena Bobbitt)

Suzie graduated from BYU with a BFA in Music Dance and Theatre where she performed as a Young Ambassador and won the Theatre Department’s award for Best Supporting Actress and an Irene Ryan Nomination for Ilona Ritter in She Loves Me.

Acting credits include Aheh in Sunfish at the New York ASCAP foundation musical theatre workshop with Stephen Schwartz, Stephanie in the New York production of Katie Thompson and Patrick Livingston’s R.R.R.E.D., Sophie in the Las Vegas production of Mamma Mia!, Nellie Forbush in Tuacahn’s South Pacific, Molly in The Unsinkable Molly Brown, Winnie Tate in Annie Get Your Gun, Laurie in Oklahoma!, Maude in Funny Girl, Mrs Wormwood in Matilda, Demeter in CATS and of course, Lorena Bobbitt in Odyssey’s Thriller. In addition to the stage, Suzie can be seen in local and national commercials. In conjunction with performing Suzie has taught music, dance, and theatre around the country. She is currently an owner and Artistic Director at Utah’s own Conservatory of Performing Arts (COPA). Thriller has been such a fun tradition for Suzie and her family. She is excited to share the stage this season with her own little Zombies and Chucky dancers. The scariest things about Suzie include not loving pie, never seeing Wicked the Musical and her ability to avoid making dinner.

Thanks to her own little family of ghouls and goblins for all their support and to the Yeagers for all the memories!

Guest Artists

Darla is the mama of 2 amazing boys and a darling and sassy baby girl. She and her husband Nik Day started a non-profit called 90&9 which promotes healthy living through the performing arts and was their reaction to a world darkening with the challenges of mental health. SAWYER BROWN

SHAYNE HILL

Shayne Hill is the not-so-new “new guy.” Shayne joined the band in June of 2004—after rehearsing with the band once. Once. Yes— he was that good.

Shayne grew up on the road playing music. His family had a band and they toured all across the Western U.S.—with Shayne playing even more instruments than he does today. But no—he will not play fiddle for you. We’ve already asked him.

Once moving to Nashville, Shayne toured with Chely Wright, Avalon, and LeAnn Rimes, just to name a few. He is also an in-demand background singer and guitar player. And since he needs just a little bit more to do, he has his own recording studio— where he can be found whenever one of his kids isn’t crying…and sometimes even when they are.Shayne and his wife Kristin have two children, Jesse and Harper—they are cute like their mama.

JOE SMYTH

Joe Smyth never met a percussive instrument he didn’t like—and he can play them all. The band’s original bio stated that Joe played 300 percussive instruments—a number that Hobie made up, but still swears by.

Joe is a graduate of the Berklee College of Music and earned a Master’s Degree in Music from the University of Miami—but he doesn’t rub that in the other guys’ faces. That speaks volumes about him.

In addition to being a sought-after session drummer, Joe is accomplished symphonic musician, as well. He has played with the Nashville Symphony, including at their heralded appearance at Carnegie Hall.

Joe is also a respected percussion instructor, doing his part to nurture the next generation of drummers and percussionists. Joe is the proud dad of Tristan, Jenna, and Bryce.

GREGG HUBBARD

Gregg “Hobie” Hubbard was born and raised in Apopka, Florida—The Indoor Foliage Capitol of the World. So there.

There was never a time Hobie can remember that he wasn’t listening to—and by listening we mean obsessed with—music. He grew up attached to the radio and record player— and is still rarely very far from either one today…although the record player looks more like an ipod these days.

24 tuacahn.org
NOVEMBER 10 SAWYER BROWN

Hobie sang and played piano in church through his high school years and began writing songs when he was in college. He has co-written several of Sawyer Brown’s hits, including “The Dirt Road,” “Drive Me Wild,” “’Round Here,” and “Outskirts of Town,” as well as several songs on the Sawyer Brown Christmas albums. In addition to Sawyer Brown, Hobie has sung background on recording sessions for a variety of artists.

Hobie gave up a promising career in the food services industry to join the band. He might or might not still have the smock.

MARK MILLER

Mark Miller was born in Ohio, but moved to Florida when he was in eighth grade. Growing up, he played basketball, went to the beach, worked at Walt Disney World, and went to school—pretty much in that order. He was on the basketball team at the University of Central Florida when he started writing songs, finally deciding to move to Nashville to focus on singing and songwriting. The move worked out okay. Mark has written many of Sawyer Brown’s hits, including “Step That Step,” “The Walk,” “Thank God for You,” “The Boys and Me,” as well as the band’s anthem: “Some Girls Do.” Mark discovered the band Casting Crowns and has produced all of the band’s CDs, winning a Grammy for his work with them along the way. In April 2013, “Ring the Bell,” a movie that Mark wrote and produced, was released—and he has more movies in the pre-production stage. He doesn’t sleep much. Mark and his wife Lisa have two children— Madison and Gunnar. They own their daddy.

When New York City pianist Scott Bradlee created Postmodern Jukebox out of a basement in Queens in 2011, his goal was simple: to remake the pop hits of today into the classic sounds of the legends of yesterday. Miley Cyrus became The Platters. Bruno Mars became Frank Sinatra. The Spice Girls became The Andrews Sisters. Guns ’n’ Roses became Bessie Smith.

Now, nearly a decade later, Postmodern Jukebox has grown to become a pop culture mainstay in its own right, having played over a thousand shows on six continents worldwide — including acclaimed venues like Radio City Music Hall, Sydney Opera House, and Red Rocks Amphitheater. In the process, PMJ has introduced audience to many of the world’s greatest singers, dancers, and instrumentalist — many of whom have gone on to become stars in their own right.

DAVUD

At just 16 yrs old, David Archuleta became a star. In 2008 more than 30 million television viewers fell in love with his angelic voice, making him runner-up in Season 7 of “American Idol.” His first single “Crush,” debuted at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, eventually going double platinum after selling more than 2 million digital copies, worldwide. After a few more albums, appearing as a guest star on The Mormon Tabernacle Choir’s holiday album, and starring in a mini-series in the Philippines, Archuleta (a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints) put his singing career on hiatus so he could serve a two-year stint as a missionary outside of Santiago, Chile. Since his return to music in 2014, David successfully began releasing music under his own indie label, Archie Music. Regularly selling out two domestic tours a year and with a total of nine studio albums under his belt, Archuleta now resides in Nashville where, in his downtime, he’s able to collaborate with other songwriters and musicians. His most recent album ‘Therapy Sessions,’ which Billboard magazine dubbed as his “most vulnerable music yet,” narrates Archuleta’s lifelong struggle with mental health.
