Program (subject to change) What We’ve Lost on the Way Choreography: Felix Landerer Music: Christof Littmann Costumes: Lindsey Reif Dancers: Kody Jauron, Elijah Labay, Lindsey McGill, Julia Radick, Ching Ching Wong The piece can be seen as a reflection on the pace and restlessness in which we move through our lives. It raises the question, if there is any substance to be found in that pace or if we all just attempt to keep up and leave burned grounds behind us. MemoryHouse is one of a series of signature, dramatic, and cinematic duets from Northwest Dance Project’s founding Artistic Director, Sarah Slipper. The viewer is taken into the internal domestic world of a woman and a man, but it’s unknown if the various states and portions of their relationship and interactions that we see are happening, or are selected memories. The movements in the final minutes of MemoryHouse are decided by the dancers onstage. The female dancer’s eyes are shut and she is completely vulnerable to her partner. Is he there or not? As the duet comes to a close, she chooses one of multiple endings suggested by the choreographer, but chosen by her in the moment.

15 Minute Intermission At Some Hour You Return Choreographer: Jiri Pokorny Music: Sync24, Nicolas Jaar, Jacaszek Costumes: Heather Treadway Dancers: Andrea Parson, Elijah Labay, Franco Nieto, Julia Radick, Viktor Usov, Ching Ching Wong 15 Minute Intermission State of Matter Choreography: Ihsan Rustem Music: Ólafur Arnalds, Max Richter Poem: Benjamin Wardell (spoken by Andrea Parson) Costumes: Rachelle Waldie Dancers: Samantha Campbell, Elijah Labay, Lindsey McGill, Franco Nieto, Andrea Parson, Viktor Usov, Ching Ching Wong I discovered this poem, “The Clouds Inside,” by Benjamin Wardell, a friend and dancer with Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, and became immediately fascinated by the comparison he had made between us and clouds. I began to read the poem over and found myself lost in his vision of the world above reflecting society and discovered that the more I read, the more detached I became from the situation; an observer seeing these words and worlds come to life but from the outside in, my mind creating what felt to be almost a memory. This poem was the stimulus and inspiration which structured all decisions in the creative process for “State of Matter” - whilst not aiming to tell a story as such, I wanted to see us through the minds eye of one person, removed, on a journey dictated, like clouds, by the opposing forces in life often beyond our control. Special Thanks: We would like to thank our partners in the creation of these works including National Endowment for the Arts, Oregon Arts Commission, Regional Arts and Culture Council, the Oregon Cultural Trust, and Boeing Company. We would also like to thank UtahPresents, the University of Utah, and Brooke Horejsi for inviting NW Dance Project to perform in Salt Lake City.

About NW Dance Project Founded in 2004 by acclaimed dancer, mentor and choreographer Sarah Slipper, NW Dance Project is dedicated to the creation and performance of innovative and significant contemporary dance works from established and emerging dance makers created in an open and artistically stimulating environment.

Photo TD Foto

NW Dance Project has fostered the creation and premiere of over 160 original contemporary dance works to date. Our dedication to providing dancers and dance makers the resources and creative room needed to realize new, inspired dance works led Dance International Magazine to proclaim that we are “changing the way dance is created” and the NW Dance Project has become “a laboratory, factory and repository for risk-taking new works from the next generation of choreographers from Europe and North America.”

I AM BIG BIRD: THE CAROLL SPINNEY STORY•JANUARY 29

Kingsbury Hall POST-FILM Q&A WITH CAROLL SPINNEY For 45 years, Caroll Spinney has been beloved by generations of children as the man behind Sesame Street’s Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch. A loving portrait of the man in the yellow suit, the film features extraordinary footage of Spinney’s earliest collaborations with Jim Henson. As the yellow feathers give way to grey hair, it is the man, not the puppet, who will steal your heart.
