This retelling of Romeo and Juliet explores themes that are as relevant today as they were when the show debuted in 1957: race, violence, and cultural identity. As Tony and Maria try to find their place in the world while the tension between warring street gangs intensifies, they are forced to face the question if there will ever be a world where they can be together. I’d like to remind you to download The Grand App, free on the App Store or Google Play, to get special behind the scenes interviews with the cast and production staff. A Word

from the

stage director

West Side Story is an amazing, iconic, legendary piece of the American Musical Theatre canon. Originally created by four geniuses: choreographer, Jerome Robbins; composer, Leonard Bernstein; librettist Arthur Laurents and lyricist Stephen Sondheim, it was to be a retelling of Romeo and Juliet set in New York City with warring factions of Jews and Catholics. It became the kid-gang story when Robbins and the others were sitting poolside in Los Angeles and the news was filled with the stories of gang violence. It was then that Bernstein heard the rhythms of street noise that pervade his brilliant score which includes some of the most gorgeous orchestral and dance music ever written. Sondheim was brought in later to help write the lyrics and was not given full credit until much later. When it was revived in 2009, the only remaining creator still alive was Laurents, who was asked to direct it. Our humble production is modeled on his lovely revisions. We have included the new Spanish lyrics and dialogue added by Lyn-Manuel Miranda, giving it a much more modern and timely gravitas. Many people base their impressions only upon the movie, which is its own animal, and has not the resonance and collective feel of the stage version. With all its gorgeous music and stunning choreography, it is ultimately a tale about Tony and Maria that is, in Laurents’ own words, “a story about how love cannot exist in a world of bigotry and violence”.
