Choosing a new scent to wear on your wedding day is a surefire way to trigger happy memories when you inhale that particular blend after your big day has passed. Quite possibly one of the most renowned and classic fragrances, Chanel No. 5, has been reinterpreted into a modern, lighthearted and fresh scent by the iconic fashion house's perfumer, Olivier Polge. Chanel No. 5 L'Eau ($119 to $168, at Chanel counters) is a brilliant contender for your wedding day fragrance, featuring bright citrus notes of lemon, mandarin and orange accompanying the classic Chanel notes of rose, jasmine and ylang ylang. This rendition of Chanel No.5 is a whole new take on a beloved scent, making it a gorgeous option for celebrations.
Vitamin C is heralded for its brightening properties and this 3-step system from Ole Henriksen is a brilliant way to amp up skin's natural radiance before a special occasion, making this perfect for any bride-to-be or bridal party member. Each set of POWER Bright ($66 for 6 treatments, sephora.ca) contains 3 different formulations in numbered pods to keep the ingredients fresh, which increases efficacy. Sugar, honey and pomegranate seed powder buff away dulling skin cells to reveal fresh, radiant skin. A potent 25% strength vitamin C serum is layered on and activated by the final step, a cleanser laced with rosehip oil for soft, smooth and supple skin.

Hey DJ, Keep Playin'
by the Milni team When it comes to getting a party started, selecting entertainment is a crucial decision. Wedding DJs have certainly earned a definitive "must-have" status for South Asian weddings, but not all wedding DJs are created equally. We caught up with Nav Singh of Nspire Sound to learn a bit more about what brought him into the highly entertaining world of wedding DJs. Tell us about Nspire Sound. What inspired you to the start your company? I started Nspire Sound 15 years ago because I felt that families that were hiring DJs received basic forms of customization. I was a DJ for a few years doing events for friends and family before I started this business. When attending events, I always noticed DJs would have Punjabi music with limited English options. They would also say that they would play certain requested songs, but they never did. It was extremely frustrating to me as a guest, but I concluded that the DJ was playing what the brides and grooms wanted. One day, after attending a wedding as a guest, I actually spoke to a groom after his reception and discovered he was upset that his specific song requests weren't played. That made me decide to move into the wedding industry and it's been a crazy ride. How is your team different than other DJ companies? Nspire Sound was the first to assemble a team of DJs into the South Asian wedding scene. Other individual DJs obviously existed, but a team was a unique concept. We brought a level of professionalism to the DJ game, from wedding dress code to pre-event client meetings. We are also at the forefront of technology in terms of equipment we use, such as Serato, which is a computer-based DJ program. I proud to say I have a letter from the company stating that we were the first in North America to buy their product. It is now the universal standard of DJ software. We pride ourselves on being ahead of the curve whenever possible. We operate at a higher standard than our competition with more client meetings per booking to ensure that everyone walks away with a positive experience. We don't accept each and every booking sent to us. We don't outsource DJs, so the DJ you confirm in your event contract is the DJ that shows up on the night of your event. If we don't have the right DJ available for your event, I apologize and decline the event, which happens more often than you'd think.

How do you work with your clients to ensure they are selecting the right music, lights and entertainment for their wedding events? We strive for true customization. We sit down with each client to develop an understanding of what type of wedding they’re interested in to make sure we can rock it. We go through the entire night with our wedding worksheet, including song requests and songs that must not be played. These meetings are important because it allows the client and DJ to build a rapport and ensures a smoother execution of the flow of events. A lot of clients don't have wedding planners, so essentially we are the ones helping control the evening. As far as sound, lighting and special effects, every client is different; when I initially meet the client, I suggest all options and through a detailed process, we're able to determine the best package for their family and guests. What is the craziest wedding entrance song and dance you have seen at a wedding? We all share stories after events as a team. Pyrotechnics, smoke, flash mobs, cars, motorcycles - there's definitely some crazy stuff that people do these days. What was the worst first dance song you have had to play for a couple? A tale from my team: the couple didn't meet the DJ prior to their wedding reception, so they chose their first dance song at random. It was slow and not exciting, and ultimately, the guests thought my team had played the wrong song and we're all staring at DJs. My DJ did suggest the couple select a song in advance, but they were so stressed with the wedding planning process, and just stubbornly settled. It was a small wedding, so it was a super awkward moment, but they ended up being a really fun couple and family, so it was all good. If their intent was for people to remember their entrance, it worked!

You finally found the perfect artist for your wedding, and you’re excited. A trial is a great way to figure out exactly what your wedding day look will be. You should take a bit of time to think about what you want to look like and how you want to feel. Do you want to be ultra glam and if so, are you okay with touching up all day? Do you want to look effortless? Do you want to have your hair up and out of your way? There’s a lot to consider, but no need to fret! Here are some tips to help prep for your trial that will make the experience far more enjoyable. Look through magazines or create a Pinterest board of looks you love. Group your ideas into two sections - one for makeup, one for hair. Once you have your images, go through and pick out ones that resemble your features. For example, if you have brown hair, pick images of hairstyles executed on brunettes. Why? Hairstyles can look very different on various hair colours. If you see a beautiful, beachy braid on a blonde, it’s important to acknowledge that it wouldn’t look the same on your deep brown hair. Take the same approach for the makeup looks you’re exploring. Looking at images that have the same features and skin tone as you helps build a realistic vision of a look that will suit you. Bonus: your artist will love you for this. Ultimately, having your hair and makeup done is meant to bring out the beauty in you - not make you look like someone else. Think about how you look on a day-to-day basis, how you look when you go out and how your fiancé sees you. You might think that you want to go for full glam on your wedding day. You might love the idea of it, but you don’t want to stray so far from your true self on your wedding day. You want to feel like you and you want your partner and loved ones to recognize you. I’m not saying you can’t turn it up a few notches, but keep in mind you want to look back at these images in years to come and see your best self!
MILNI
On the day of the trial, be sure to take images with you of the looks you have in mind for hair and makeup, as well as your dress. If you have a veil or hair accessories, take it along to see how it can be incorporated seamless into your look. Go to your trial with clean, dry hair. Your stylist can add texture if it’s needed or create a smooth look without having to fight any product you might have used. I usually remind my clients to have clean, blow-dried hair. It’s a great idea to exfoliate your skin (especially your lips!) before the trial. This ensures that your face is ready for makeup with no dry flakes standing in the way. You can also apply your moisturizer beforehand to make sure that your skin is well hydrated. If you are planning to do a drastic hair change before the wedding, do the trial after that hair change is scheduled, or speak to your artist about what you are planning to do. This way, there are no surprises on the wedding day for either of you, as the changes you make could affect the hairstyle you pick. Try to schedule the trial earlier in the day if possible to see how it wears. Consider scheduling your trial run on a day that you’ll be going out so that you can make the most of the glam look you're walking away with! www.milni.co | 14
Karima's Top Shelf As a makeup artist and a self-professed product junkie, I have tried a lot of products and continue to try new launches to ensure I am up to date on the latest formulations and innovations! Here are some of my alltime favourite products: 1. Give your skin a glow from within and use a primer with luminous properties, such as Charlotte Tilbury Wonderglow ($65, charlottetilbury.ca). 2. Use a foundation that suits your skin type and needs. If you have oily skin, try a formula with a semi-matte finish, such as NARS Sheer Glow Foundation ($58, sephora.ca). If your skin is on the dry side, use a hydrating formula, like MAKE UP FOR EVER Water Blend Face & Body Foundation ($54, sephora.ca). 3. Make sure to set your foundation and concealer to make them last! I like a lightweight loose powder, such as Kat Von D Lock-It Setting Powder ($38, sephora.ca). 4. Blush is a must to brighten your face and complete your look. Opt for a formula that offers pigmentation that’s still easy to blend in for a natural finish. Try Too Faced Love Flush Long-Lasting 16-Hour Blush ($32, sephora.ca), which comes in a flattering range of shades. 5. A pink-nude lipstick is the perfect complement your glowing skin. One of my go-to shades for brides is MAC Lipstick in Créme In Your Coffee ($23, maccosmetics.ca). 6. Looking for a fast way to add major texture to flat hair? Try Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray ($53, Holt Renfrew). 7. To add some wave and texture to hair, I love using a curling iron and doing some quick curls and shaking them out. My wand of choice: Hot Tools 1 ¼” Curling Iron ($124, tradesecrets.ca).

HOW TO MAKE YOUR
RELATIONSHIP STRONGER by Dimple Mukherjee Image: Unsplash, Gabby Orcutt
Calling all lovers! Before you start your lifelong journey together, here are 7 principles of making love last, according to the Gottman Institute’s model of The Sound Relationship House: Enhance Your Love Maps. Get to really know each other. Emotionally intelligent couples are intimately familiar with each other’s worlds. The key? Ask open-ended questions. Nurture Your Fondness & Admiration. What drew you to your partner in the first place? When you have a fundamentally good view of your relationship, it acts as a powerful buffer when the (inevitable) rocky times creep up. Turn Towards Each Other Instead of Away. Every time you let your partner know that he or she is valued during the daily grind, you’re putting value into the emotional bank. Let Your Partner Influence You. Respect your partner’s opinions and feelings when making decisions. Practice Conflict Management Next time tempers flare, soften the start of your points by beginning with “I feel” statements. Don’t blame. Make Life Dreams Come True. We all have goals, and it's essential you support your partner’s. Give them a safe space to grow and love. Create Shared Meaning. Ultimately, a spiritual dimension is all about creating an inner life together. Create your own traditions/rituals, as they're important to having that shared meaning among the otherwise mundane day-to- day. Let’s all love to the best of our ability. ❤ MILNI

At The by the Milni team When it comes to South Asian weddings, the value of a wedding planner is not to be understated or overlooked! Wedding planners are essential when planning largescale events with guest lists often upwards of 400 people – and that’s on the conservative side. Wedding planners are fantastic for making sure the details (big, little, and everything in between) are squared away and looked after so that you can ultimately enjoy your big day even more than you thought possible. We sat down with Richha Arora of Arora Events at Nadège's Queen Street location to chat about strategy related to weddings, including how to keep the numbers down and a cardinal rule for all aspiring wedding planners to keep in mind.
Milni: What are your top planning tips for today’s South Asian bride planning her wedding? Richha Arora: Do not put pressure on yourself to please everyone. No matter how delicious the catering is, someone will have something to say about it! No matter how on schedule you are, someone will think your cocktail hour is too long. Try your best to make the majority of your guests happy, but accept that pleasing everyone isn’t realistic, so it’s not worth fretting over!

M: What advice do you have to get couples and parents on the same wedding planning page? RA: Communication is key! So many times, we have brides and grooms undertaking the planning process with us; however, families and parents are less aware of what is happening in the planning process. It’s important that key decision makers are in the know of your wedding plans so that expectations are clear and there are no surprises for anyone on the wedding day. If there are some vendor meetings that you can bring your parents to, it not only helps them feel a part of the process, but it puts them to ease and allows them to address their concerns. As part of our planning process, we host a large family meeting with key family and bridal party members closer to the wedding day to review the agenda. It’s a great way to get everyone on the same page and iron out any kinks before the big day. M: What’s the best overall advice you’ve heard and repeated! - related to wedding planning? RA: We always like to ground our clients throughout the planning process. When emotions and stress levels get high the day before the wedding, we like to remind them that no matter what, tomorrow you’ll be married and that’s what matters. It’s a reminder that the wedding is only the beginning of the next chapter – marriage!

DIY Florals
South Asian weddings are known for being gorgeous, bold and grand...as well as a significant financial undertaking for all involved. If you're up for a little crafting, there's nothing like taking decor into your own hands to create centrepieces for some of your pre-wedding gatherings. This sweet floral arrangement is ultra easy to put together and the supplies can largely be found at discount retailers or the dollar store. These florals are a perfect accent to your bridal shower, bachelorette party or for adding a bit of colour to your home during the pre-wedding festivities.
Supplies Floral foam (ours is from Walmart) Scissors Glass vase (from the dollar store!) Twine

www.milni.co | 19
STEP 1: - On a scratch-proof workspace, cut yourself a piece of floral foam to fit inside the base of your small vase - The floral foam should ideally be flush with the height of the vase - Wrap twine around the vase, tying it in a bow and cutting the twine from the roll with the scissors (or measure it out beforehand and then cut it whatever your preference!) STEP 2: - Now that your floral foam is trimmed, soak it in water so that it absorbs fluid to later keep the florals hydrated - Do so by filling a deep dish with water and letting the foam absorb the water for a few minutes - Once sufficiently saturated, place the foam in the vase - The foam will deepen in colour when wet, but that will only add to the pop of colour your flowers give STEP 3: - Trim your flower stems! - We decided to go with a fairly tight flower arrangement design, so our flower stems were trimmed down to be a bit shorter than the height of the vase - We found 8 roses per vase were best for a filled effect with little to no gaps that would allow the floral foam to be visible from the top - Bonus points!: You can opt to line the vase with leaves from the flowers for an added textural element that's visually pleasing - We recommend storing these arrangements in the fridge if you're making them at all in advance, as the cold temperature will help prevent petals from wilting MILNI

regularly found in gorgeous wedding celebrations held in the Mediterranean region. Some of our all-star vendors convened to come up with a beautifully rustic and elegant concept that captures a South Asian wedding with an Italian flair. The details are divine
with so many colours and exciting elements to take in. It's so exciting to see the range and variety vendors can offer. Much love to all involved for bringing a fantastical vision to life! Be sure to check out the behind-the-scenes video online on our blog here.

We love to see a variety of colours and textures that add a touch of whimsy to a special day. These splashes of aqua and green are a nod to the Mediterranean inspiration of this wedding theme, while the cake design is a nod to the bride's attire.
Matching florals between wedding invitation design and decor serves as a visual point of cohesion.

Mandy grew up attending countless large Indian weddings, growing to admire the regal feel and the vibrant colours. For their wedding, Mandy and Jeremy aspired to create a hybrid between an Indian wedding and a Western wedding that was unique to their tastes. Picking the venue presented a challenge; they loved the on-trend rustic feel, but felt that Indian attire would be a mismatch with a rustic aesthetic. When they saw the Grand Banking Hall at One King West, they had finally found the perfect backdrop for their desired vibe - regal with a vintage flair. They worked with the Rachel Clingen Wedding and Event Design’s team to bring their vintage vision to life. The team was phenomenal at creating a cohesive event space that the couple loved. The head table backdrop was a particular feature that the design team worked with Mandy to create. The colour palette for the reception was navy blue, blush and gold, which matched Mandy’s reception lengha - a custom creation by Blue Peacock. Jeremy’s navy tuxedo was also a nod to the colour palette, custom made by Garrison Bespoke. Mandy and Jeremy's favourite moment of the night? The unveiling of a midnight buffet from McDonald's, which was a labour of love that the couple insisted on when working with One King West. Z Molu Photography captured the colours of this intimate wedding beautifully, as you can see in this feature!

Amardeep and Sophie began their courtship for a brief moment in their university years, taking off once they had completed their studies, which lead the couple to become inseparable. For Amardeep and Sophie's auspicious celebration, they wanted to give their guests an amazing culinary experience since one of their favourite things to do is dine out, and Amaya Catering accomplished that objective effortlessly. Amardeep is a car fanatic, which inspired the couple to use Amardeep's father's classic car as an accessory in their pre-reception photos. The happy couple wanted guests to be engaged and entertained throughout the evening, and this was achieved through a combination of a violinist, aerialists and a photo booth for keepsake photos.
