FLOOD HAZARD MITIGATION Planning & Management
FLOOD HAZARD MITIGATION Milone & MacBroom has been a leader in flood hazard mitigation for over 30 years. The firm has designed many projects aimed at increasing flood resiliency, including improvement of channel hydraulics, restoration and reconnection of floodplains, removal or replacement of undersized culverts and bridges, removal of dams, wetland creation, and structural alterations of buildings. Our engineers have secured Conditioned Letters of Map Revision (CLOMRs) and Letters of Map Revision (LOMRs) for various projects, and are familiar with Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) modeling and mapping standards. Our experience includes extensive hydrologic and hydraulic analysis, oneand two-dimensional hydraulic modeling, benefit-cost analysis, and regulatory permitting. A majority of these projects have focused on flood mitigation approaches that are designed to simulate natural conditions, increase flood resiliency, and restore degraded river channels, floodplains, and wetlands.
HAZARD MITIGATION PLANNING Hazard mitigation is defined as sustained action that reduces or eliminates long-term risk to people, property, and resources from natural hazards and their effects. Milone & MacBroom has worked with over 100 communities in several states to develop hazard mitigation plans. These communities have elected to include the many following hazards in their plans tropical storms and hurricanes, thunderstorms and tornadoes, severe winter storms, earthquakes, dam failures, wildfires, and inland and coastal flooding that can occur as a result of any of these events.
HAZARD MITIGATION GRANT ASSISTANCE Milone & MacBroom has assisted many communities with benefit-cost analysis and grant applications under the PreDisaster Mitigation (PDM) program and Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP). Funded projects have included home acquisitions, bridge replacements, culvert replacements, riverbank stabilization, and landslide mitigation. We have helped obtain over $2 million in mitigation funds for numerous communities across New England, New York, and the eastern seaboard.
FLOOD MITIGATION DESIGN Milone & MacBroom has evaluated, designed, and supervised construction of a wide range of stream-related projects, including channel restoration and flood mitigation, streambank stabilization, and high bank failure repair, in many diverse settings and scales. Many of our past design projects have included complex hydrologic and hydraulic analysis, structural analysis, and regulatory permitting.
