Stream & River Restoration

STREAM & RIVER RESTORATION

A healthy river can increase recreational opportunities, reduce water pollution, and protect against flooding. Dams can also cause considerable harm to rivers, depleting fisheries, degrading ecosystems, and disrupting the natural functions of the river. Understanding the reasons for dam rehabilitation and dam removal alternatives is key to sustaining these advantages and restoring the river to its natural state.

WATER RESOURCES Milone & MacBroom is recognized throughout the country for its leadership and innovation in the fields of water resource engineering and environmental science. As consultants to federal, state, and local government, our environmental engineers and scientists marry the principles of engineering, biology, hydrogeology, and earth sciences to develop environmentally sensitive project designs. We have long considered it important to not only understand but also respect the local, state, and federal environmental regulations that govern this work. We understand that a design is only good if it can be permitted and built. Therefore, embedded within this group is extensive expertise in environmental permitting. Staff assist project teams throughout the firm in developing designs that improve the management of water resources and preserve our natural environment.

STREAM & RIVER RESTORATION Milone & MacBroom has been a pioneer in combining stream and channel restoration, streambank stabilization, flood control, wetland creation, and stream habitat restoration. Our team of engineers, biologists, environmental scientists, and landscape architects have developed multi-faceted restoration projects that bring together ecological habitat improvements, flood control, and recreation. Many of our flood control and stream restoration projects have been completely integrated with the recreational components such that visitors are unaware that the site is anything more than a park or linear trail. Our staff of hydrologists, water resource engineers, and wetland biologists are well versed in the technical aspects of analysis, as well as state, federal, and local permitting that is often required for project implementation. Staff is also well-versed in the FEMA review process. The firm applies fluvial geomorphology and bio-technical processes to “natural channel design. BIGELOW BROOK STREAM RESTORATION MANCHESTER, CT

DAM REMOVAL & MODIFICATIONS Milone & MacBroom has unique experience in the area of dam removal and modifications and has been involved in over 100 projects in over ten states, with the completed removal of over 30 dams. Our staff have conducted feasibility analyses and dam removal and fish passage studies, created preliminary and final designs, and provided construction administration services during the dam removal. Staff members are frequently invited to speak at regional and national conferences ranging from specific case studies to general river restoration techniques. The firm has planned and designed fish ladders and bypass channels around dams, as well as fish passage ramps at dams that must remain in place. Milone & MacBroom has removed concrete, masonry, earth, and timber dams for safety, fish passage, habitat improvements, and river restoration. In addition to specific dam removal and modification projects, Milone & MacBroom has extensive experience in river restoration; fisheries habitat; fluvial geomorphology; fish passage; bioengineering; water quality; sediment analysis and WEST FORK RIVER DAM REMOVAL CLARKSBURG, WV

management; creation / restoration of natural stream channels; environmental permitting; and advanced hydrologic, hydraulic, and sediment transport modeling. Milone & MacBroom is the recipient of the “Outstanding Organization Award” from the Southern New England Chapter of the American Fisheries Society in recognition of the firm’s commitment to maintaining aquatic habitat and restoring fishery resources.

TIDAL RIVERS & MARSHES Milone & MacBroom is experienced in the analysis of coastal waters including restoration of tidal rivers, wetlands, and ponds. The firm provides specialized services in one- and two-dimensional hydrodynamic computer modeling of complex tidal waters. Milone & MacBroom has conducted tidal wetland restoration along the eastern seaboard from Maine to Delaware, including extensive restoration along the Long Island Sound in Connecticut and New York. This work has included land survey, tidal flow monitoring, wetland delineation and functional

assessment, two-dimensional hydrodynamic modeling, engineering design, construction phase services, and postconstruction monitoring. Milone & MacBroom provides a full complement of services associated with flood control and tidal marsh restoration. Our work on previous projects has ranged from initial evaluation of marsh species and habitats, water quality monitoring, geomorphological analysis, hydrologic analysis, hydraulic modeling of alternatives, development of design plans, and permitting. WETLAND DELINEATION & FUNCTIONAL ASSESSMENT Milone & MacBroom has unique experience in the area of wetland delineation and evaluation services. Wetland delineations and functional assessments are performed for fresh, brackish, and salt water systems, plus vernal pools. Our in-house staff of certified soil scientists, wetland ecologists, wildlife biologists, and hydrogeologists are able to delineate local, state, and ROCKWELL PARK BRISTOL, CT

federal wetlands using several indicators including vegetation, soils, and hydrology. The firm’s technological edge allows site assessments that utilize the latest available digital mapping resources that can be reviewed prior to conducting field studies. These resources are coupled with our in-house survey, landscape architecture, and civil engineering capabilities to produce quality site plans that are sensitive to the environment and easier to successfully permit. The firm completed a coastal survey for the Connecticut Department of Energy & Environmental Protection, locating tidal wetland, dune, and beach features.
