2011 CORONADO SPEED FESTIVAL
Welcome As the Commanding Offi cer of Naval Base Coronado, it is my great pleasure to welcome you to Naval Air Station North Island, the “Birthplace of Naval Aviation”, for the 14th Annual Coronado Speed Festival and NAS North Island Open House. This weekend, wings will take a back seat to wheels as we once again host the nation’s most unique car races; classic pedigreed machines racing on a 1.6 mile course built on a Navy runway and taxiways. In addition to the racing, attendees can visit a vendor village, wander through the car club corral and tour prestigious classic car collections. This perfect family outing has plenty of excitement for racing fans of all ages. This year, the race appropriately celebrates the 100 year anniversary of Naval Aviation at the place where it all began, North Island. To commemorate the Centennial of Naval Aviation, vintage and modern-day aircraft and other military hardware will be on display at the entrance to the “speedway.” I also hope that you take advantage of the warship tours and meet the truly remarkable Sailors of your Navy. It’s only through a generous partnership with the San Diego Fleet Week Association, that we are able to bring you the 2011 Coronado Speed Festival as part of San Diego’s Fleet Week celebration. Best wishes to all of the drivers and their race teams! On behalf of the more than 31,000 service members and civilians who work on Naval Base Coronado Installations, I would like to thank the cities of Coronado, Imperial Beach and San Diego for their unprecedented and continuing support of our young men and women in uniform. Thank you for supporting this event!
YANCY LINDSEY
CAPTAIN, U.S. NAVY COMMANDING OFFICER, NAVAL BASE CORONADO
Welcome To the 14th Annual Fleet Week Coronado Speed Festival presented by Lockheed Martin! This year we are honored to participate in the Centennial Celebration of Naval Aviation. What makes this incredible 100th anniversary so special for those of us participating in the races or volunteering for the event, as well as those of you who are joining us this weekend as spectators, is the fact that we are standing on the very birthplace of Naval Aviation. This is a privilege for all of us to be here! This weekend we are acknowledging and celebrating three Centennials. We are racing our beautiful pedigreed cars where Naval Aviation was born 100 years ago. Many of us are driving fabulous old cars manufactured or powered by Chevrolet, which is also celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. And, last but certainly not least, some of this weekend’s vintage display cars have raced in the Indianapolis 500 which turned 100 this year as well. As many of you know, the Speed Festival was conceived in 1997 to pay tribute to service men and women who dedicate and risk their lives to defend us and to keep America a free nation. Please make sure you thank them for their service as you see them roaming around the event. Many sailors and marines may not be in their uniforms, so if you notice a tell tale haircut or some other defi ning piece of clothing, please ask so that you can thank them as well. Cris Vandagriff, President of The Historic Motor Sports Association and his team have once again brought to the Base a fabulous collection of vintage race cars, as well as, historic and contemporary stock cars that had a previous life in the Winston Cup/Sprint Cup series with NASCAR. He has also added another class of race cars to the paddocks, the Formula 5000’s, America’s answer to Europe’s Formula One. Additionally, the Fleet Week team has put together a huge car club corral along with a car show “showdown”, terrifi c static military displays, the Navy Leap Frog team, F-18 fl yovers, test drives by Chevrolet and BMW, more ship tours including the U.S.S. Ronald Reagan, a nuclear-powered super carrier and the U.S.S Benfold, a guided missile destroyer. We are also excited to introduce our newest addition to the Speed Festival, which allows active-duty military men and women to compete against one another in our fi rst annual, Stock Car Race Series Military Pit Crew Challenge. For those of you who follow NASCAR, you are familiar with the annual event that challenges the Team Pit Crews to compete to see which team has the fastest pit stop, which includes pushing a car to a selected spot, jacking up the car and changing the tires, fi lling the fuel tank, etc. The Stock Car Races Series club (SCRS) thought it would be fun to devise a competition of 8 teams made up of 10 members stationed on Naval Air Station North Island, its ships, air squadrons, etc who will compete during the lunch hour on Saturday and Sunday. The semi-fi nal competitions will take place on Saturday and the fi nals will take place on Sunday. Let’s cheer them on!!!! Thank you again for supporting this great event. Team-driven innovation that has made Aegis the cornerstone of today’s ballistic missile defense. A vital component in ensuring global security. Partnering with the U.S. Navy to keep America and its Allies safe is all a question of how. And it is the how that Lockheed Martin delivers.

Ride & Drives Visitors to the Fleet Week Coronado Speed Festival will get the opportunity to test drive one of several models from participating manufacturers. There is no additional fee to participate in the Ride & Drive events, but those interested should visit the events for more information and an explanation of program rules. Drivers are accompanied by trained product specialists, who point out vehicle features and benefits, and answer questions. Each Ride & Drive takes about 15 minutes.
Garage Tours Aside from being set up on a live Naval tarmac, one of the event’s most distinct features is its open paddock, which allows fans the opportunity to walk right up to the cars and interact with the drivers and crew. What better place to learn about the history of these magnificent cars than in the garage with the professionals? Take advantage of the free, guided tours of the garage. You are also more than welcome to visit the garage on your own time. Whether it’s a guided tour or a casual stroll, it’s certainly an experience you don’t want to pass up.
Participating Manufacturers
Mark Maynard’s Garage San Diego Union-Tribune Wheels editor, Mark Maynard, will be on-site at Maynard’s Garage, just off of vendor village and near the paddock area. Stop by to meet Mark, and also see what cars he’s bringing this year to the Coronado Speed Festival: among the cards in Maynard’s Garage this year will be the 2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302 (444-hp, track model), the 2012 Porsche Panamera Turbo S (top-line performance model with 550-hp – goes from zero to 62 in 3.8 seconds), and the 2012 Chevrolet Camaro 45th Anniversary Edition coupe. Also, the newspaper will be promoting its weekly automotive section, and it’s award-winning SDmarketplace Wheels Website on SignOnSanDiego.com. The website offers more consumer help in selecting a new or used vehicle, free photo classifieds and automotive news – all updated throughout the week.
Calling all Speed Fest attendees! Watching high performance machines zip around the track is certainly exciting – but how about getting behind the wheel yourself to feel the power of a brand new Corvette or Camaro? Chevrolet is bringing these to Speed Fest and welcoming members of the military, their families and race enthusiasts alike to take a free test drive. Stop by the Chevrolet booth and sign up to drive. You must be at least 21 years old to drive or 18 years old to ride along, and don’t forget your valid driver’s license.
The BMW Performance Drive If the racing action has you craving a fast ride, why not satisfy it in the driver’s seat of the ultimate driving machine? BMW has brought a slate of vehicles from its line-up to give drivers a feel for all it has to offer, beginning with the 328 which for 21 years in a row has been the Car & Driver Top 10 award winner by defining the luxury sports sedan market. The 328 is a premier example of the 50-50 weight distribution which predicates the ultimate driving machine. The X3 and X5 are called sports activity vehicles because the ride and drive offers much more performance and quality than traditional SUVs. Still, you’ll be amazed at the storage room for mountain bikes, kayas and other active lifestyle accessories. The two-seat roadster Z4s got their start with James Bond, and provide a fun, unique sports car driving experience that looks great and drives better than they look. In the mid-size category, the 5-Series sedans are perfect for carrying golf clubs or dining out with another couple, without being bulky. They’re agile and catlike as the rest of the brand. BMW offers financing to make these magnificent vehicles affordable. Contact your local San Diego County dealer for options.

NAVAL BASE CORONADO Naval Base Coronado (NBC) is one of the largest consortiums of military Installations in the Navy with a plant replacement value of nearly $6 billion dollars. It is composed of Naval Air Station North Island, Naval Amphibious Base Coronado, Naval Outlying Landing Field Imperial Beach, Naval Auxiliary Landing Field San Clemente Island, Silver Strand Training Complex (SSTC), Remote Training Site Warner Springs (RTSWS), Camp Michael Monsoor and Camp Morena. These eight geographically separate complexes account for over 57,000 acres combining three airfields; three ports; land, sea, undersea, and air ranges; and over 1,000 buildings in support of local, state, and federal law enforcement and international military training, as well as nearly all U.S. Navy warfare areas and extensive U.S. Navy research, development, and testing efforts. NBC supports over 31,000 military and civilian personnel across 140 tenant commands, including Commander, Naval Air Forces; Commander, Naval Surface Forces; and Commander, Naval Special Warfare Command. The base also oversees 5 housing areas that provide nearly 700 homes to Navy families. The headquarters for NBC, Naval Air Station North Island (NASNI) is best known as the “Birthplace of Naval Aviation” and serves as a Master Helicopter base and home to the West Coast’s premier intermediate and depot level maintenance facility, Fleet Readiness Center Southwest. NASNI’s nearly 250 days of sunshine annually and mild climate are the perfect environment for its 20 squadrons. It is also a favored destination for visiting forces, contributing to an annual air traffic count of over 121,000 evolutions, 10,000 transient aircraft, 120,000 passengers, and 7,160 tons of air cargo. In response to the 2006 Quadrennial Defense Review, shifting 60% of naval forces to the Pacific region, NASNI’s helicopter community will transition to the MH-60R/S helicopter and grow by 4 squadrons…from 151 aircraft to 203 aircraft by calendar year 2016. This growth will result in over $200M of construction and renovation; to include a new three-squadron hangar, a new maintenance facility, and an increase of 800 personnel and 33% in airfield operations. NASNI is also the premier, West Coast Aircraft Carrier port with facilities for three of these nuclear powered vessels. Two carriers currently call NASNI home; the USS CARL VINSON (CVN 70) and USS RONALD REAGAN (CVN 76), with the other three West Coast based Aircraft Carriers making regular port visits throughout the year as they prepare for and return from operational deployments. These versatile, multi-mission warships have recently supported several military operations such as Operation IRAQI FREEDOM, Operation ENDURING FREEDOM, and a host of humanitarian and disaster relief efforts such as Operation UNIFIED RESPONSE following Haiti’s devastating 2010 earthquake and Operation TOMODACHI following Japan’s devastating earthquake and tsunami in March, 2011. Just south of NASNI, Naval Amphibious Base Coronado (NAB) is home to the Navy’s West Coast amphibious warriors with over 30 tenant commands and a population of approximately 5,000 personnel. NAB is also home to Naval Special Warfare (NSW) Command headquarters, four West coast-based SEAL Teams, Special Boat Team 12, its undersea component and the Naval Special Warfare Center where these special operations forces train. NSW continues to grow its Force, expand its training curriculum and seek training range enhancements to effectively meet its overseas operational requirements. NAB is the only base of its kind on the West Coast, which encompasses calm bay waters, rougher ocean 14
water, and land/beach training areas in close proximity to administrative and training facilities, providing a unique, cost-effective training complex for students and experienced, warhardened veterans. Every Navy SEAL has, at some point in time, passed through and trained at NAB. Located near the Mexican border, Naval Outlying Landing Field Imperial Beach (NOLFIB) provides critical airfield, pattern, approach and landing training for all of the Navy’s West Coast helicopter crews. It’s also home to Maritime Expeditionary Security Group ONE and its three subordinate Maritime Expeditionary Security Squadrons. Known as the “Helicopter Capitol of the World”, NOLFIB rivals San Diego’s Lindbergh Field with over 236,000 annual air evolutions, which accounts for nearly 95% of required helicopter training for squadrons based at NASNI. Naval Auxiliary Landing Field San Clemente Island (SCI) is the southernmost of the eight California Channel Islands and serves as a cornerstone for all tactical training and support to the Southern California Range Complex. Comprising 37,000 acres, SCI is the only naval range facility where surface ships, submarines, aircraft and Special Forces can simultaneously conduct coordinated live fire training scenarios across all warfare areas and in all physical battlespace domains. The Island is also home to 22 listed species of animals and plants, which require close, careful management and deconfliction to ensure Navy forces can accomplish their training missions while ensuring full compliance with natural resource, environmental, and cultural law and regulations. Every West Coast Carrier Strike Group and Amphibious Readiness Group trains and exercises in the Southern California Range Complex before deploying to areas around the world. Operations at SCI have grown 560% over the past 10 years, with recent annual support of 19,000 air evolutions, 8,000 training events, and over 11,500 Department of Defense transient personnel. SCI’s invaluable contribution to military readiness and national security cannot be under-estimated and it’s unique location and capabilities cannot be replicated anywhere in or around CONUS. The Silver Strand Training Complex (SSTC), formerly known as the Naval Radio Receiving Facility, has become a premier training facility for the Navy’s Special Warfare forces. Located on the border of Imperial Beach and Coronado, this 450-acre facility provides access to the San Diego Bay and Pacific Ocean providing a realistic training environment necessary to maintain maritime skills. Located in East San Diego County, Camp Michael Monsoor and Camp Morena provide realistic mountain warfare training opportunities that closely mimic the terrain Navy Special Warfare forces experience in many overseas locations. North East San Diego County is home to the Remote Training Site Warner Springs, Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape (SERE) facility, which prepares aircrew and high risk of capture DoD personnel to survive under any conditions. SERE specialists train over 6,500 aircrew members a year in the proper use of principles, techniques, equipment, and procedures necessary to survive in hostile environments and situations. NBC continues its award-winning legacy and is committed to maintaining a vital and productive relationship with its surrounding communities, conserving its natural resources, continuing its remarkable energy and water conservation programs, and managing an outstanding Safety program and record…all while providing outstanding support to the Fleet, Fighter and Family.

flags
The flags shown on this page are displayed from the tower at the start/finish line, as well as in each turn. With these various flags, race officials are able to communicate with individual drivers during the race.
track communication
Start
At the start/finish, the green flag means “go”. It is displayed to start the race, or restart after a caution period. On the course, it means “all clear” at the end of a danger area controlled by yellow flags.
Stop
The red flag stops the race because of an unsafe condition on the track, such as a crash or rain storm. All drivers must stop racing immediately and proceed to the pits.
Caution
The yellow flag means slow down and take caution because of an unsafe condition. Drivers must hold their positions by not passing other cars under the yellow flag, but may close the distance from the leading car.
Overtaking
The blue flag is shown to slower cars to warn them that they are going to be overtaken by one or more faster cars.
Enter the Pit
The black flag tells a driver to enter the pits on the next lap for consultation. Ignoring the flag means the car is disqualified. This flag may be shown for several reasons, including mechanical problems, oil leakage or penalties.
Mechanical Problems
The black flag with red or orange disc informs the driver that his car has mechanical problems likely to endanger himself or others, and that he must stop in the pits on his next lap.
Oil on the Track
The yellow flag with red stripes tells drivers that the track surface has suddenly deteriorated due to oil, water or other problems.
Last Lap/Slower Traffic
At start/finish, the white flag is shown to drivers as they enter their last lap. On the course, the white flag tells the driver that he is overtaking slower traffic such as an emergency vehicle or disabled race car.

Tips on Enjoying the Races
We are here.
The fi rst thing that you’ll notice as you enter the Coronado Speed Festival grounds is the distinctive roar of the cars as they speed around the track. These incredible sounds, along with the bright collage of colors and spectacular vintage racing cars, almost seem to overwhelm your senses. Move Around: The general admission grandstands are “open seating,” so take advantage by moving around and sampling the view from different locations. Passing By: For passing, fi nd a tight turn just after a long straightaway. For speed, fi nd a spot on the main straightaway. Select Your Favorites: Find cars that you like during the warm-ups in the morning, and follow their progress during the afternoon races. Check Out the Various Classes: There are all kinds of different cars racing, from the powerful Cobras, Corvettes and Shelby GTs, to the nimble Porsches and Lotuses. Look out for engine sizes and see what a difference it makes in sound and speed. Listen: Different cars make totally different sounds. From powerful roars to high-pitched whines, each car has its own signature sounds. Listen for gear shifting and tire squealing if you’re close to the corners…it will give you an insight into the drivers’ styles and skills.
