Normally, debt forgiveness results in taxable income. But under the Mortgage Forgiveness Debt Relief Act of 2007, enacted Dec. 20, taxpayers may exclude debt forgiven on their principal residence if the balance of their loan was $2 million or less. The limit is $1 million for a married person filing a separate return. Details are on Form 982 and its instructions, available now on this Web site. “The new law contains important provisions for struggling homeowners,” said Acting IRS Commissioner Linda Stiff. “We urge people with mortgage problems to take full advantage of the valuable tax relief available.” The late-December enactment means that reporting procedures for this law change were not incorporated into tax-preparation software or IRS forms. For that reason, people using tax software should check with their provider for updates that include the revised Form 982. Similarly, the IRS is now updating its systems and expects to begin accepting electronically-filed returns that include.

Form 982 by March 3. The paper Form 982 is now being accepted, but the IRS reminds affected taxpayers to consider filing electronically, which greatly reduces errors and speeds refunds. Debt must have been used to buy, build or substantially improve the taxpayer's principal residence and must have been secured by that residence. Debt used to refinance qualifying debt is also eligible for the exclusion, but only up to the amount of the old mortgage principal, just before the refinancing. Borrowers whose debt is reduced or eliminated receive a yearend statement (Form 1099-C) from their lender. For debt cancelled in 2007, the lender was required to provide this form to the borrower by Jan. 31, 2008. By law, this form must show the amount of debt forgiven and the fair market value of any property given up through foreclosure. The IRS urges borrowers to check the Form 1099-C carefully. Notify the lender immediately if any of the information shown is incorrect. Borrowers should pay particular attention to the amount of debt forgiven (Box 2) and the value listed for their home ( Box 7). Note: Legislation enacted in October 2008 extended this relief through 2012. Thus this relief now applies to debt forgiven in calendar years 2007 through 2012.

Road Trip North to Tallahassee! Tour “The Old Capitol” Tallahassee gets its name from the Apalachee Native American world meaning “land of old fields.” The Apalachee, the first inhabitants of the region, were an agricultural society. In 1528, an expedition led by Panfilo de Narvaez brought the first Europeans to Apalachee country. A few years later, Hernando de Soto spent the winter in the area of the State Capitol Building. Settlers and missionaries followed and as more people came, warfare and disease led to the demise of the Apalachees. In 1821, Spain ceded Florida to the United States. Tallahassee selected as the center of government for the territory because it was mid-way between Pensacola and St. Augustine, the two most important Florida cities at that time. When Florida officially became a state in 1845, Tallahassee was the logical capital. Originally built in 1845, this white stucco, neo-Classical building served as Florida's State Capitol until 1978, when it moved to the modern office building in back. In 1979, the city began to restore the Old Capitol to its 1902 appearance and it opened as a museum in 1982. There are exhibits on Florida's state history and self-guided tours visit the house and senate chambers, the governor's suite, the Supreme Court and the rotunda. Capri Salad ~ Yummy!!!! Using a sharp knife, cut tomatoes into thin slices. Drain the mozzarella, if necessary and cut into slices. Slice the olives into thin slices. Layer the tomatoes, mozzarella slices, olives and basil leaves in 4 stacks, finishing with the cheese on top. Place each stack under a preheated hot broiler for 2-3 minutes or until the cheese has melted. Drizzle the balsamic vinegar and olive oil. Season to taste with salt and pepper. A German company, Nanopool has essentially turned glass into a liquid spray by extracting silicon dioxide from sand and combining it with water or ethanol. The product can be sprayed on anything from desks to clothes to statues, making surfaces antimicrobial and easy to clean. Quantum LiquiGlas is only 100 nanometer thick, which is about 500 times thinner than a human hair and is resistant to bacteria because the material’s chemical properties make cell growth difficult. LiquiGlas is already being used on hospital surfaces in the U.K. and at a meat processing factory in Germany. It will hit the U.S. market later this year!.

Get the kids out and into nature. We have so many parks here for taking hikes, camping, swimming and outdoor activities. Children establish bonds with outdoors and will give them a reason to want to protect the environment they have grown up in. By using simple phrases like “Use less and give back more”, meaning use less water, less paper, less electricity and give back more to the earth by creating a home garden..even small, these are ideas the kids can understand and take forward and teach other kids!

Ok...this one is easy. Buy a pack of cloth napkins. Buy some cool, fun napkin rings. Let everyone in the family pick out their napkin ring and after dinner, if the cloth is still pretty clean...drop in a basket designated for the napkins and reuse them the next night. Wash and start over! Think about how many paper towels you won’t use in a year!

Teaching kids about putting the papers in one bin and glass in another bin. If their clothes are still in good condition, they can pack a box and you can take them to a local charity or Goodwill center. Explain that now some other child will be able to wear them. How about turning off the water while they are brushing their teeth!
