Wouldn't it be great if we could wave a magic wand and "presto" change would just happen? And it would be stress-free? Change is often the most difficult process professionals undertake, but it doesn't have to be hard. Here are some tips on how to manage change by managing the quality of your conversations. Managing a business today means leading change in your organization. Leading change through real conversations can be an important ingredient as you build your management skills and incorporate important changes that affect your strategic planning. Your project management people skills and how you use them to manage these work conversations may be improved with some coaching and a few simple guidelines. All change must start with a change in attitude. Business is an extended conversation, whether it's with your boss, team members or direct reports. As a leader, your ability to manage these conversations is the start to making change more palatable as you grow your healthcare practice.

Sadly, the quality of many work conversations borders on mediocrity and boredom. Meaning and connection tend to be reserved for personal conversations. To communicate effectively, focus on the quality of your conversations. The way you present your information can make the difference between: • Clarity or confusion; • Collaboration or competition; • Inspiration or resistance; and • Profound connection or disengaged boredom. Real conversations begin with YOU. You must be the change you want to see, and model how you want others to behave. Despite indisputable evidence to the contrary, many leaders believe that displaying emotions in the workplace should be avoided. In fact, showing how passionate you are about your topic portrays you as a leader who cares and who is intent on affecting positive change. There are 10 simple steps that can guide you through more meaningful conversations.

Welcome back, once again, for the continuation and in this case, the culmination, of Facelift or Remodel. We have so far discussed Flooring and Cabinetry issues one can encounter when working on your kitchen and or bath. This month we will touch on issues that pertain to the Fixtures in the K&B. That is my true specialty. As owner operator of Aquadecor / Faucets, Sinks, Etc. my family and I are confronted daily with challenges associated with all types of issues related to this. The fixtures (toilets, faucets, sinks, lights etc…) are considered to be pretty much any appliance type device that, most of the time, requires a licensed contractor to install. Many times the reinstallation of these fixtures are reasonably priced(Depending of course on your selection) and can create a very clear change along with a little paint on the walls can make a small investment a major visual and functional change. Of course, we go back to the original rulewhat condition is/are your fixture/s in to begin with. I am taking it for granted for the purpose of this write up, that the homeowner wants to change the fixtures in his or her bath. TOILET The first and really quick test you should do before deciding to change out your water closet (toilet), is to measure the distance between the wall behind the water closet and the bolts on the side of the closet. That dimension is called the toilet rough-in dimension. The standard is 12”, and about 95% of the water closets available in the market place today are for 12” rough-ins. Unfortunately, that dimension is not always 12”. Sometimes it’s a little less and sometimes a little more than 12”. There are a few avenues to rectify your problem, in my opinion, only one of them, good. Some of the bad ones first, this should allow you to fully appreciate the last. First, you can have the floor chipped away at the drain area to allow moving the piping over the necessary distance, by a contractor with his chipping hammer. This would allow the dimension to be rectified back to 12”. It would also require addiVolume 8, Issue 11

tional piping, is expensive, and is extremely messy. Second, you can go on a hunting expedition in search of either 10” or 14” rough toilets that would respectively accommodate your non-standard rough-in dimension. These water closes are far and few between and because of the laws of supply and demand, are very expensive and usually very plain looking. The last, newest and easiest option is to purchase your water closet from a manufacturer that incorporates removable trap ways on their toilets. These toilets in addition to being skirted (are fully draped in the front out of the same vitreous china/porcelain material that conceals the trap way. This feature also makes cleaning the toilet considerably easier ) come with removable trap ways that are standard at 12” roughs. But, as an option these companies offer 10” and 14” removable trap ways that can be used in lieu of the 12” trap that comes in the box. This will accommodate/ adapt these toilets to any of these offset installation requirements. Today, there are several manufacturers that offer toilets with these features, although the pioneer of the technology was TOTO of Japan. In the flooring section we discussed challenges that may result from different size toilet footprints with regard to tile/stone/wood flooring. VIEW THESE LISTINGS WWW.SFREGUIDE.COM

FAUCETS (LAVATORY) Pretty much what you see is what you need to get. What do I mean? If you are not changing your lavatory sink/bowl or in some cases countertops, you need to replace the faucet you have with a faucet that covers the same amount of holes and that the holes are the same distance apart. The three types available are: single hole, 4” CC, and widespread faucets. The first, as its name sake suggests needs only one hole to be installed into. The 4” CC is installed into three holes, the center of the two outside holes being separated by 4”. The widespread faucet also gets installed into three holes, but the center of their two outside holes are separated by 8” or more. Other concerns to keep in mind, although they are clearly more aesthetic in nature, are to try to match the finish on all the faucetry, accessories, lighting, and door hardware. You won’t believe, if you have these in different finishes, how much of a difference just this makes. Hopefully this write up has helped to shed some light on what may not always be obvious issues and concerns encountered when working on your kitchen and or bath. Most importantly, I hope this was able to help anyone who is on the fence and undecided about whether to do a complete remodel or just a facelift. Cooking with Chef Juliette Corn!!! It's that time again. It's been coming in drips and drabs, but watch out it's coming. You might as well get used to it, cause it's here to stay, so scour through your recipe files and pull out all those soup,muffin, and pudding ideas, sit back and enjoy!!! I would like to share with you some of my fondest corn related memories and a quick easy recipe to add to your own collection. As a college student, we used to take holiday's in a border town in Mexico named La Playa Plata. We had great fun camping on the beaches and visiting the small town just a mile away. During corn season, street vendors with push carts used to sell grilled corn and shrimp, (which were almost as large as an ear of corn!) served with a wedge of lime and salt. How simple, yet delicious. While at college I befriended a gal who married a Mexican man. At the end of corn season, which was sometime between Thanksgiving and Christmas, we would gather at her house to make tamales, using the dried husks that were saved from the harvest. The house was packed with all the abuelas, tias and hermannas from his family and all the grandmothers, aunts and sisters from her family. The chores were split up amongst each of us. First, us novices would have the chore of checking for ear wigs (yuka). Then the better part of the day was spent making the pork and beef fillings. Then, in an almost conveyer belt like process, someone would spread a thin layer of masa on the husk, next came the meat filling, then the rolling, tying and stacking and finally into the pressure cooker. Talk about a girls night out!! We would be there all weekend making and cooking tamales. Then on Sunday, ( after what seemed like we made a zillion tamales) the “men folk” would come with plenty of cervas, then we all enjoyed the fruits of our labors. I never tried to make them on my own as it is a lengthy process, and am certain I could never recreate the recipe or the heart that went into the process. But, I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity.

Then there is, in two words, Apfelkorn and Amsterdam. Apfelcorn is this wonderful liquor made from corn and apple, that is drunk ice cold (yummy), accompanied with herring in some form (Hollands' answer to the hot dog!) And then there is Amsterdam, well, let's just say “What happens in Amsterdam...” So get your heads together folks and embrace the corn. Here is my favorite way to enjoy corn. The amounts of the ingredients are arbitrary, everything is to taste, but here are the basics:

Roasted Corn Salad 3 - 4 Ears corn on the cob 1 Red bell peppers 1 Onion (I use vidalias or red) 1 Canned black beans (rinsed and drained really well and blotted so the color of your salad wont be gray) 1/2 cup Cilantro, chopped Salt and Pepper Red pepper flakes, just a shake 1/4 cup Rice wine vinegar 1 tbs Olive oil (optional) 1 Fresh squeezed lime juice Pop all your veggies on the grill and cook. Skin the peppers and chop, Chop onions, Cut the kernels off the husk Put all veggies and black beans in a bowl and toss with rice wine vinegar, cilantro, s&p and olive oil if using. Serve at room temp. Enjoy!!!
