CALDER FOUNDATION IN(sta)FlaTION ECO-PARASITE
The re-design and addition concept for the Martin Luther King Jr. Library was to make the previously hidden book stacks a main focal feature and programming element throughout the building. This building is a Mies Van Der Rohe design and shares the common elements in many of his designs, such as ornamental I-beams and a recessed ground level plan. The book stacks cross multiple floor planes and programs, and serve as unifying elements such as masses, and at times voids to let in natural light to the core of the building. A central circulation path created through ramps provides increased natural light, an inviting entry way and a direct circulation path to the upper levels of the library. The book stacks that are half in and half out of the building are a gesture and recognition of the library of the 21st century, where books and technology have to coexist. In the public realm, the first floor market hall and event space create a visual connection from the exterior to the interior breaking the threshold of a former unused space.

The interior contains an open atrium area that is created by removing the current floor slabs and exposing the structure within them. The exposed I-beams serve as reminders of the previous design, while also supporting the new scheme. Book stacks are placed as monolithic elements along the interior circulation that remind the visitors even though this is a new technological era, books were once the main source of information. These stacks are seen throughout other areas of the building
as well providing connectivity between floors and separation of interior program. The previously separated and distinct spaces were opened up to create areas that are more free and flexible for occupants to enjoy. The general idea behind the rebranding of the building was to make it known that there is a library behind the facade and the books being shown from the street reflects this idea. Books are a symbol of information and knowledge and will continue to be seen as such in the MLK Library. MARYWOOD SOA

The community center serves as an urban node along the reclaimed post-industrial Lackawanna River Heritage Trail. The trail is located on the footprint of a previously abandoned railroad, which serves daily as a primary catalyst for recreational activity. Not only is the site used for pedestrian activity, but it also houses a community center, business center, housing for adults with autism and a private sanctuary space focusing on natural light. The form of the site plan was taken from alignments of existing structures and surrounding areas. This form creates an urban funnel for pedestrians along the trail and residents on site. The ground level of the project is composed of the public space of the program and is structured to hold up the rectilinear housing on top. The housing lies along the North/South axis in order to accommodate natural forces and systems and is cantilevered across the site with the aesthetic of a train trestle. This project is to serve as a communal intervention in an area that needs revitalization.

An urban node for community activity and a trail head for the Heritage Trail Society, this intervention seeks to establish a recreational center in a former post-industrial site. The program consists of a business center, cafe, community center, autistic housing and a small sanctuary space. The varied programs allow the form of the buildings on the site to take on main arteries of pedestrian flow. The entry areas are announced by

copper cladding and structure is composed of cast in place concrete panels. The vegetated roofs allow the building to appear to be growing out of the site, an aesthetic chosen for its proximity to the Lackawanna River. The facilities embrace the existing surroundings while improving the overall experience for both occupants, residents and visitors.

The Alexander Calder Foundation is a proposed museum, auditorium and research/ restoration facility in center city Philadelphia. The chosen site is a former parking lot near an arts corridor with a view of the William Penn statue designed and built by Calder’s father. The building was designed to showcase Calder’s work inside and out, while providing space to reflect upon the monolithic sculptures in the context of the city. The Footprint of the building intentionally creates large amounts of public space incorporating vegetated roofing as well as a sunken theatre. A main axis connects the building to the rest of the city allowing for movement through the site as well as places of refuge.

larger program into distinct parts. The pedestrian axis also allows for opportunities to view Calder’s work while circulating through the city. The building form is oriented to specific views that enhance the way the sculptures are viewed, this allows the downtown to be the backdrop for the art work. This strategy was realized through a series of figure/ground studies that were created using alignments taken from prominent locations in the immediate vicinity of the site.

The street corner typologies in center city Philadelphia were analyzed and documented in order to study the way pedestrians move throughout the urban context. The harsh 90 degree corners that are very common were preventing a freedom of movement from block to block and they formed a rigid boundary between the buildings and the sidewalk. I wanted to reduce this boundary by chamfering the buildings on the site and creating a main pedestrian axis that bisects the

INsta(F)LATION is an inflatable installation located in the lobby of EMPAC (Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center). EMPAC was chosen as a site for this installation because of its poor vestibule design. The installation will provide a new transition from exterior to interior allowing for a smoother thermal transition into the building. The design concept revolves around motion actuated silicone inflation that provides a thermally dynamic surface. This surface is constricted by a tensile rope and is allowed to inflate in an irregular asymmetrical movement. The experience of the installation is multi-sensory incorporating both visual and tactile performance for the user. The air source is concentrated on top of the space frame that supports the inflatable installation; the inflation occurs when movement is sensed and follows the path of the user. Temperatures of the air flow vary based on the seasons.

A design propsal for New Orleans and Miami, two cities which flood often. This design provides a temporary relief shelter for humans as well as a more permanent ecosystem for non human flora and fauna. The design takes advantage of the hot humid climate by growing vegetation on itself. The parasitic form attaches itself to a building stealing daylight and opportunities for views from the occupants, but in return provides a symbiotic relationship in terms of passive cooling and sun shading for the building.
