Message from the Chair
The 2022 fiscal year was a special one for the Milwaukee Art Museum. It was the first year the Museum was fully open to the public and providing regular on-campus events since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. We are thrilled to be back serving you and the community at large with our talented team.
Attendance more than doubled from the previous year as our community enjoyed the beauty of the Calatrava and a host of stellar art experiences. The Kohl’s Art Studio reopened, and the Museum’s nationally recognized Education Department welcomed more than 176,000 students and lifelong learners on campus, digitally, and throughout the community. Our innovative programming included opportunities to come together and celebrate with our community—from the “On Site: Derrick Adams”: Block Party to a new season of Lakeside at MAM, a program that has swiftly become a summer favorite for Milwaukee families. And we expect even more in 2023!
We are continuing our focus to provide compelling, innovative, and immersive art experiences. We relocated the Museum Store to a more prominent location in Windhover Hall and, also, reopened the café for food and beverage service, which together helped the Museum more
than double its earned revenue. We continue to allocate resources to ensure our Museum will serve as a vital cultural resource for local, regional, and national audiences for generations to come.
On behalf of the Museum’s leadership—my fellow trustees and management—I extend our heartfelt gratitude to the individual supporters, foundations, corporations, support groups, and organizations that partner with us to empower the dedicated staff and docents to provide dynamic art experiences celebrating our incredible collection.
Let me close by thanking each of you for your support as we endeavor to create a special place where everyone can immerse themselves in the art, our artists, and the compelling stories that bring them all to life.
Very best,
Jeff Yabuki Chair, Board of Trustees

Message from the Director
Dear Donors, Members, and Friends of the Museum:
Over the past year, we have been heartened to see an overwhelming return of visitors to the Milwaukee Art Museum’s campus. Life has progressed closer to what we remember before the pandemic, and we were eager to welcome you throughout the year to enjoy many meaningful art experiences together. We continue the important work of inspiring and engaging guests of all ages through art, serving the community as a dynamic destination and celebrated icon for Milwaukee.
We were delighted to present exhibitions with a range of ideas and perspectives and to broaden their reach for local, national, and international audiences. This included the final iteration of the nationally touring exhibition An-My Lê: On Contested Terrain, the first survey of work spanning the celebrated photographer’s career, and Always New: The Posters of Jules Chéret, which highlighted James and Susee Wiechmanns’ generous gift of more than 600 works by the artist to the Museum and the idea, relevant today, that change is central to modern life. For the Museum’s On Site series, critically acclaimed artist Derrick Adams created Our Time Together, a site-specific installation that reframes historical Black narratives by commemorating rituals of everyday Black life and leisure in Milwaukee. From large feature presentations to more intimate collection-based rotations, our exhibitions fostered important dialogues and new modes of considering our history and shared humanity.
Through the remarkable work of our devoted team and trusted community partners, the Museum also hosted a robust calendar of
dynamic programming. Visitor favorites such as Art in Bloom and curator gallery talks returned, and we premiered the Expert Series, which sparked conversations and created new opportunities for the community to engage more deeply with art.
At year’s end, we had a change in leadership in the Education Department. Brigid Globensky, Barbara Brown Lee Senior Director of Education and Programs, retired after 22 years with the Museum. Like her predecessor, Barbara Brown Lee (BBL), Globensky brought impassioned energy and an unparalleled dedication to ensuring all the Museum’s visitors experienced the wonder in art. We remain in exceedingly talented and competent hands as Amy Kirschke, who worked alongside Globensky and BBL and has served the Museum for 20 years, steps into the expanded role of Barbara Brown Lee Senior Director of Learning and Engagement.
I am profoundly grateful to the Museum’s dedicated staff and volunteers for ensuring the Museum continues to welcome and uplift audiences of all ages and backgrounds. In the year ahead, the team and I look forward to welcoming new and returning visitors through our doors to enjoy transformative art experiences, find inspiration, and connect with one another.
Thank you,
Marcelle Polednik, PhD Donna and Donald Baumgartner Director

Dec 3, 2021–March 27, 2022
Organized by Carnegie Museum of Art. Coordinated at the Museum by Lisa J. Sutcliffe, Herzfeld Curator of Photography and Media Arts
An-My Lê: On Contested Terrain was the first comprehensive survey of the work of photographer An-My Lê (American, b. Vietnam, 1960). The exhibition featured large-format black-and-white and color photographs from across Lê’s career, which she has dedicated to exploring the complexity that envelops war. Lê draws on the traditions of survey photography and classical painting to create evocative images that look upon the landscape as a witness to history.
Major support for this exhibition was provided by Lannan Foundation and the William Talbott Hillman Foundation. Additional support was generously provided by the Virginia Kaufman Fund, the Henry John Simonds Foundation, the Phillip and Edith Leonian Foundation, the E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Foundation, Jennifer and Karl Salatka, the Virginia S. Warner Foundation, Deb and Sam Berkovitz, and the Gouge Family Fund.

Always New: The Posters of Jules Chéret
June 3–Oct 16, 2022
Curated by Nikki Otten, Associate Curator of Prints and Drawings
Always New: The Posters of Jules Chéret presented 109 posters, prints, and drawings by French artist Jules Chéret (1836–1932) that represent the French interest in novelty at the end of the 19th century. Drawn from James and Susee Wiechmanns’ gift to the Museum of more than 600 works by the artist, the exhibition was organized into five sections that highlighted the pleasures his posters publicize: performances, fashion, newspapers, leisure travel, and consumer products. Always New brought Chéret into focus as a master of his medium and demonstrated how these posters reflect larger societal issues in their depictions of everyday Parisian life.

On Site: Derrick Adams features a multimedia wall mural and sculptural installation Derrick Adams (American, b. 1970) made specifically for the Museum’s East End, on commission. Inspired by Victor Hugo Green’s The Negro Motorist Green Book (published 1936–66), a traveler’s guide for Black Americans during the Jim Crow era, Adams celebrates the rituals of everyday Black life and leisure and reframes historical Black narratives.
Derrick Adams: Our Time Together is the first in the Museum’s On Site series to activate the East End. The exhibition series, which began in 2001, involves inviting contemporary artists to make new work that responds to a location within the Museum.

Currents 38: Christy Matson
Feb 25–July 17, 2022
Curated by Monica Obniski, Curator of Decorative Arts and Design, High Museum of Art and former Demmer Curator of 20th- and 21st-Century Design. Coordinated at the Museum by Margaret Andera, Interim Chief Curator and Curator of Contemporary Art
Currents 38 presented more than 40 woven compositions by Los Angeles–based artist Christy Matson (b. 1979), who thinks of herself as a painter. Her woven pictures participate in minimalism, abstraction, and decoration. She employs historical weaving structures and techniques to explore memory; the gendered history of textile production, long considered a feminized form of labor; and issues around sustainability.
The Museum’s Currents series began in 1982 to highlight new trends in contemporary art; Matson is the first fiber artist to be featured in the series.
Presenting Sponsor: Milwaukee Art Museum’s Friends of Art Research was supported by a Craft Research Fund grant from the Center for Craft. Exhibitions originally scheduled for 2020 at the Milwaukee Art Museum were made possible by the 2020 Visionaries: Donna and Donald Baumgartner, John and Murph Burke, Sheldon and Marianne Lubar, Joel and Caran Quadracci, Sue and Bud Selig, and Jeff and Gail Yabuki and the Yabuki Family Foundation.

BRADLEY FAMILY GALLERY
A O SMITH CORPORATION GALLERY (AMERICAN ART GALLERY K230)
American Memory: Commemoration, Nostalgia, and Revision
Curated by Brandon Ruud, Abert Family Curator of American Art, and Phoenix Brown, Abert Family Curatorial Fellow
Told in three chapters across the galleries, this exhibition examined how images—paintings, prints, and documentary photographs—shape our memories and understanding of historical and current events. American Memory amplified underrepresented voices and analyzed the impact of slanted narratives, employing social history to move beyond purely aesthetic readings of the works.
Chapter 3: Responses and Revisions
Oct 1, 2021–Jan 16, 2022
This third and final chapter highlighted how the images we use and see in the schoolroom, in books and travel guides, and online and through social media can shape our memories and perceptions of historical events.
Distinctive Individuality: George Mann Niedecken’s Milwaukee Interiors
March 25–Oct 9, 2022
Curated by Brandon Ruud, Abert Family Curator of American Art, and Chyna Bounds, Assistant Curator
Local furniture designer and self-described “interior architect,” George Mann Niedecken (American, 1878–1945) blended the simplicity and natural forms emphasized by the Arts and Crafts movement and Prairie School with the decorative embellishments associated with the Art Nouveau and European Secessionist styles. Drawn from the Museum’s collection and its George Mann Niedecken Archives, Distinctive Individuality spotlighted Niedecken’s
approach to design for creating a home in complete harmony.
The exhibition focused on Niedecken’s Dining Table and Eight Chairs for the Frank T. Boesel Residence. Never before shown at the Museum, the set featured recently restored chairs.

The reupholstering of the chairs was generously funded by the Demmer Charitable Trust.
PABST BREWING COMPANY GALLERY (EUROPEAN GALLERY S202)
In the Dark: European Prints, 1600–1910 Jan 14–June 5, 2022
Curated by Nikki Otten, Associate Curator of Prints and Drawings
In the Dark featured 20 prints that revealed the many facets of darkness artists have explored over the centuries. Some depicted physical spaces, others adopted the dark as a metaphor for despair or grief, and still others represented primordial states from which life emerges. Made between the early 1600s and the early 1900s by artists including Paul Gauguin, Francisco de Goya, Käthe Kollwitz, and Rembrandt van Rijn,
all of the works were drawn from the Museum’s collection. Together, they offered an opportunity to reflect on the generative potential of darkness during some of the shortest days in Wisconsin.
Convoy of Wounded: An Artist’s Experience of War
Layton Art Collection Focus Exhibition
Aug 5, 2022–March 26, 2023
Curated by Catherine Sawinski, Assistant Curator of European Art
Edouard Castres’s painting Convoy of Wounded (Franco-Prussian War 1870) received wide acclaim after its display at the 1872 Paris Salon. A citizen of neutral Switzerland and member of the newly formed International Red Cross, Castres (1838–1902) was uniquely positioned to capture the humanitarian disaster that occurred toward the end of the Franco-Prussian War. Castres and the conflict that inspired the painting were brought into critical focus in this exhibition.
Program Highlights
Lecture: “War Imagery in Nineteenth Century France,” with Katie Hornstein, Associate Professor of Art History at Dartmouth College
Sponsored by Layton Art Collection Inc.

HERZFELD CENTER FOR PHOTOGRAPHY AND MEDIA ARTS
Shifting Perspectives: Landscape Photographs from the Collection
March 18–July 3, 2022
Curated by Lisa J. Sutcliffe, Herzfeld Curator of Photography and Media Arts, and Ariel Pate, Assistant Curator of Photography
Shifting Perspectives explored how photography transforms our understanding of the physical world— of the places we call home. Photographers have been documenting and reflecting upon the landscape since the early 1800s, when camera technology made capturing an image possible. Their pictures often trace the effects that political and social forces, including war, climate change, manufacturing, and development, have on the land. Together, the more than 65 photographs in the exhibition traced the various ways we see and understand the landscape, from metaphor to speculative terrain.

The Milwaukee Art Museum’s Currents exhibition series highlights new trends in contemporary art. This volume brings together nearly 50 of Christy Matson’s works from the previous five years, which were featured in the exhibition, and is the first publication to explore the artist’s wide-ranging textile art. Working within a renewed interest in craft practices, the Los Angeles–based Matson (born 1979) creates woven pictures that explore memory and imagination through the layered history of textile production while advocating for issues surrounding sustainability. Her abstract compositions resemble paintings, and yet they are deeply rooted in textile history. Using a digital jacquard loom, Matson both honors the centuries-old craft and embraces new technologies.

Always New: The Posters of Jules Chéret is the first museum publication in English dedicated to the French artist Jules Chéret (1836–1932) and celebrates the impact he had on French art and culture. The exhibition catalogue details how Chéret embraced the public’s interest in novelty and rapid change during the 19th century and transformed the illustrated poster into a form of ephemeral art. Drawing from the James and Susee Wiechmann Collection, the largest collection of Chéret posters in the United States, Always New features more than 100 works illustrated in full color that span the artist’s career.

Donors
Individual supporters, foundations, corporations, and organizations, including the Museum’s support groups, were instrumental in helping the Milwaukee Art Museum serve the community as a vital source of inspiration, a place that brings people together to celebrate human creativity and the power of art to change how we see each other and our world. Museum Members and donors annually support the presentation of world-class exhibitions, the creation of leading education programs, and the care and stewardship of more than 34,000 works of art that we hold in public trust. Museum supporters also play a critical role in caring for the Museum’s largest work of art, the Santiago Calatrava–designed Quadracci Pavilion, which transformed
the skyline at the lakefront 20 years ago, becoming an icon and source of pride for the city.
This fiscal year, through memberships and special Annual Fund gifts, the Museum’s Annual Campaign raised $4.2 million from 12,732 donors; grants and sponsorships provided an additional $3 million.
The following list recognizes those who generously supported the Museum as Members, annual fund donors, or sponsors of exhibitions and educational programs, providing unrestricted and restricted support of $400 or more during the 2022 fiscal year (September 1, 2021–August 31, 2022).
Thank you.

PUBLIC FUNDING SOURCES
The US Small Business Administration, and the Milwaukee Arts Board and Wisconsin Arts Board, with funds from the State of Wisconsin and the National Endowment for the Arts, provided crucial operating support to the Museum. Milwaukee County continues to support the Museum’s programs and its managing of the Saarinen and Kahler facilities on behalf of the County. Lastly, a major grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services supported activities related to the Museum’s Knowledge Management Infrastructure initiative.

In Memoriam
In August, the Museum lost a longtime and much-beloved supporter, Isabel Bader. Together with her late husband, Alfred Bader, she championed the European art program at the Museum in myriad ways. She served as a guest curator in 1989 and was a founding member of the Fine Arts Society; in 2013, she and Alfred generously supported the position of Curator of European Art. Together they donated more than 40 artworks to the Museum over the years, profoundly transforming the collection and helping build strength in 17th-century Dutch painting. Her kindness, quick wit, and love of the arts made her a passionate ally, and she believed firmly in the power of art to transform lives. She will be deeply missed.
Well-known Milwaukee philanthropist Michael Cudahy passed away in March, leaving behind an unprecedented legacy of support for the arts, innovation, and change across the city. Cudahy’s more than 30-year relationship with the Museum included serving as a trustee for nearly two decades. Cudahy’s exceptional largesse contributed to the building of the Santiago Calatrava–designed Quadracci Pavilion and the Museum’s ability to start planning for its future within its iconic building debt free. The Museum’s Cudahy Gardens, designed by Daniel Kiley, bear the Cudahy name in honor of his unexpected, generous gift. Cudahy liked to dream big and make things happen. He was committed to Milwaukee’s cultural community and will be remembered as a force of tireless energy instrumental in helping transform the downtown lakefront into a celebrated community destination.

Financial Report
The consolidated financial statements of the Milwaukee Art Museum (MAM) and its subsidiary, Museum Center Park (MCP), ended fiscal year 2022 with combined net assets of approximately $165 million. At year-end, the total market value of investments was $62.3 million, compared with $69.9 million as of 2021. The majority of the decrease was due to declines in the market. MCP had a debt balance of $1.6 million as of August 31, 2022.
With the ease in the COVID-19 pandemic, the Museum remained open the entire fiscal year, from September 1, 2001, to August 31, 2022, and more people started visiting again. The Museum welcomed 168,376 guests throughout the year. School tours and in-person programming resumed, and the Museum Café reopened. The result: Attendance and earned revenue more than doubled from the prior year.
Looking forward to fiscal 2023, the Museum has a balanced budget and, through great discipline, is in a position of financial strength to serve and inspire the Milwaukee community and beyond.
