2019-2020 FRIENDS & DONORS REPORT
Work by Dylan Wallace '20 (Interior Architecture and Design)
October 2020 Dear MIAD friend, It is not an exaggeration to say that the past year has been unimaginable in its impact on the world, our nation, city, community and MIAD. And yet, throughout the challenges and tragedies brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic and our country’s systemic injustices, the passion of our students, faculty, staff, alumni and Board has been unstoppable. Faculty and staff are unstoppable in delivering our students’ art and design education, and in supporting students to see them through last semester’s emergencies and continuing financial and emotional hardships. Their collective efforts are key to the college reaching a new all-time enrollment high again this fall at 920 students.
Our students are unstoppable in their perseverance and problemsolving, approaching remote work from a professional mindset and delivering innovative work that exceeds expectations. Students, alumni, faculty and staff are actively involved in our community. Through individual and collective projects and products, the entire college community renewed our purpose to partner and to address racial injustice. Our Three-Year Equity & Inclusion Action Plan continues to enact the changes needed to create a more equitable and inclusive environment in Milwaukee and at MIAD. MIAD is unstoppable because of your support. You help ensure that students can access our nationally recognized education in a learning environment that meets their needs and career plans in the most equitable way possible.
Thank you! Jeff Morin MIAD President

MY EXPERIENCE HAS TAUGHT ME THAT
CREAtIVE PROBLEM-SOLVING
IS THE ABILITY TO KEEP MOVING FORWARD IN LESS THAN IDEAL CONDITIONS. David Gabriel ’20 (Industrial/Product Design)
1
David is an Army veteran, interned at NASA and is a program management analyst with Dynetics. He worked with NASA engineers on a lunar habitat for his 2020 Senior Exhibition, shifting his project from a full-scale model to virtual reality after the pandemic began.

UNSTOPPABLE
CREATIVE PROBLEM-SOLVING As the world changed this year, MIAD’s passionate faculty and staff applied creative problem-solving to deliver courses online, keep students engaged and connected, and take the Senior Exhibition virtual. Unexpected challenges drove innovation beyond expectations, showcasing the grit and determination of students and alumni to succeed and effect change.
When courses shifted to online delivery in March, Illustration professor John Matson encouraged seniors to tap into their professional mindset: “Welcome to your trial run of exactly what it’s like to be a professional designer,” he told them. “The students knew how to respond and embraced the challenge. Their work exceeded my expectations.” 3
The MIAD Innovation Center worked with clients remotely and hosted weekly virtual meetups for the MIAD community. The center forged a new partnership with No Studios that provides students memberships and more, and featured individuals associated with No Studios during the weekly Epic Humans Series.
MIAD's enrollment has grown 50% over the last five years.
The First-Year Experience Exhibition went virtual on Instagram (@miadfye); work by Mikayla Kaufman ‘23 (Illustration).
Work by Raphael Miller ‘20 (Illustration).
Olivia Paul ‘21 (Industrial/Product Design) designed Charlie, a dinosaur-shaped infrared digital thermometer for pediatric use.
4
Alumna Nirmal Raja ‘08 (Painting) created “FEEBLE BARRIERS,” a record of our times as seen through the eyes [and texts] of health care workers across the globe. The text is hand-embroidered and sheer masks are machine-stitched on cotton organdy with exaggerated ties. The series of 101 masks was on view in July at Grove Gallery.
“A Healing Place” by Tiffany Dasher.
Seniors agiley adapted their work for the virtual Senior Exhibition. John Calderon ’20 and Tiffany Dasher ’20 received international Award of Excellence recognition in the 2020 Design Communication Association Juried Drawing Exhibition for their Interior Architecture and Design (IAD) thesis projects. IAD students Sam Saltijeral ’22 and Amber Henderson ’21 also received recognition for work in drawing and studio courses.
Summer 2020 Pre-College offered online art and design courses to 106 high school youth – 84% of whom received scholarships to attend. Work by Sara Vang.
MIAD’s Student Engagement staff innovated to cultivate community. Through a MIAD Minecraft Server, where students could interact, Devin Beck ‘23 (Illustration) and three other student players collaborated to build this virtual community. 6

“ MIAD stands in support OF the immediate and long-teRm actions needed to create SyStemic change and DISmantle Racism in our milwaukee community. Excerpt from MIAD statement, June 12, 2020 8
RENEWED PURPOSE TO ADDRESS RACIAL INJUSTICE At MIAD, we believe in the power of art and design not merely to reflect the world, but to change it. MIAD will enact the changes needed to dismantle racism, and create a more equitable and inclusive environment on our campus, in our Milwaukee community and beyond.
Nearly 500 community members attended the MIAD Creativity Series presentation by painter, sculptor and activist Titus Kaphar in February. Kaphar also engaged with, and prompted projects for, 250 MIAD art history students and 50 Milwaukee Public Schools students. MIAD students completed research projects and individual presentations on decolonizing art history and the high school students inserted themselves in their work, which was critiqued by MIAD Fine Arts Chair Kim Miller. The MIAD Creativity Series was generously supported, in part, by the Milwaukee Art Museum’s African American Art Alliance and the Layton Visiting Artist Fund. 9
Founders of the Strange Fire Collective addressed body policing, political action and access to power during the Fall 2019 MIAD Creativity Series. Collective members engaged with MIAD students, and curated the “In this body of mine” exhibition through an intersectional lens spanning gender, sexuality, race and representation. The exhibition was generously supported in part by the Mary L. Nohl Fund of the Greater Milwaukee Foundation.
Knox Chair of Drawing/Associate Professor Brad Bernard ’93 and MIAD fine arts students Taylor Morant, Reagan Mulvey, Darienne Hood and Mario Hamilton created a Black Lives Matter mural at RSR Services in West Allis in collaboration with Milwaukee Lutheran High School and Repaint MKE 414.
“Scream” by Dasia Bryant ‘23 (Communication Design) was featured in MIAD’s “Token or Legacy” exhibition during Black History Month, highlighting the many roles Black students must inhabit when navigating college campuses.
10
Efforts by MIAD students and the college community to cultivate a more equitable and inclusive learning environment resulted in hiring the college’s first Director of Inclusivity; establishing a Resource Center for Equity and Inclusion to better support BIPOC, LGBTQ+ and students with disabilities; and developing a Three-Year Equity & Inclusion Action Plan that was reviewed by Milwaukee Fellows, the YWCA and LIT. Actions include, but are not limited to: • supporting community advocacy • diversifying the college’s faculty and staff • providing anti-racism training on an ongoing basis • decolonizing the curriculum
In 2019, the U.S. Department of Education designated MIAD an Emerging Hispanic-Serving Institution. 11

In July 2019, MIAD collaborated with Latino Arts Inc. and Walker’s Point Center for the Arts to curate the “Mi Gente” exhibition at the League of United Latin American Citizens’ (LULAC) 90th National Convention in Milwaukee.
MIAD’s Future Designers program, which is generously funded through philanthropy, brings design experiences, technologies and career pathways to high school students. In fall 2019, the program partnered with five schools.
MIAD is partnering with Greater Together on the Greater Equity 2030 initiative, which aims to increase diversity in Milwaukee's creative workforce to more accurately reflect the makeup of the city. The college is providing guidance on creating internships for college and high school students. 12

A PASSIoN
FOR PARTNERSHIP
Throughout their education, students actively engage with Milwaukee-area nonprofits and businesses to gain professional experience and to strengthen our community through sponsored class projects, work in the MIAD Innovation Center, service learning and community programming.
Wisconsin-based Carmex worked with 120 MIAD Illustration students to create digital artwork for a social media campaign based on the students’ personal versions of comfort and living. Work from five students – Kate Kruk ’22, Liz Geoffrey ’21, Jordon Polk ’20 (work pictured), Irene Balasoiu ’21 and Amira Humes ’21 – was selected for the campaign. Carmex also hired students through the MIAD Innovation Center to create campaign videos. 15
Students completed Service Learning projects remotely. One example: Paige Slinkard ‘21 (Communication Design) designed marketing materials for the Milwaukee Water Commons.
Story & Craft – A Magic: The Gathering Exhibition welcomed renowned artist Winona Nelson to campus for a presentation, “Making a Career of Diversity in Fantasy Art.” She also met with 5th graders at the Indian Community School, where she shared her influences, work and the Ojibwe story of “The Star and the Water Lilies.”
During the 2019 Fall Experiment (Fall X) event, members of Northwestern Mutual’s STEM outreach program, hi, Tech, partnered with MIAD Innovation Center students and staff to co-host the Failing Forward Design Challenge for Milwaukee middle and high school students. The challenge helped youth to embrace the value of taking risks and experimenting while learning from the (often necessary) failures that arise during the innovation process. 16

“Receiving the emergency funds not only provided me the needed support from MIAD, but solidified how much MIAD goes the extra mile for students in need. Help during times like this pandemic where people are out of work, struggling financially due to closings, worried about what’s next, has shown how important it is for larger entities/institutions to watch out for those in their community. And MIAD did show up. So for that I am forever grateful.” Elio ’21 (New Studio Practice: Fine Arts) 20
Megan Piunti ’20 (Industrial/ Product Design) struggled to care for her dog Emmie when Emmie had a painful Intervertebral Disc Disease injury that left her temporarily paralyzed. The experience inspired Megan to design a portable crate with multiuse elements to help other injured dogs rest. The design won third place (among 265 entries from 29 colleges) at the 2020 International Housewares Association Student Design Competition.

Because the fiscal year ended May 31, 2020, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic was minimal for that period. Tuition revenue increased with the larger student population and special fundraising contributions were higher. However, spending for instruction, supplies, shipping and janitorial costs significantly increased. The 2020-21 fiscal year will realize a much greater negative impact of the pandemic as a result of lost revenues and additional requirements necessary to address it. 26
