Celebrating Excellence; Celebrating Success A welcoming community like MIAD embraces diverse voices and talents to proactively transform new challenges and opportunities into growth and success. Because of your support, MIAD marked a momentous year in 2022-2023. Your generosity allowed the college to successfully complete our $10 million Our Creative Future campaign. Together with the entire MIAD community, our programs and recognition continue to grow as our enrollment and retention hold strong. In the pages that follow, we gratefully highlight many of the voices that your support has propelled and amplified. We entered the current academic year with great enthusiasm and intention, especially as we proudly celebrate 50 years of art and design education in 2024. Thank you once again for your generosity as we boldly look to a shared creative future of innovation and service with our students, our Greater Milwaukee community, and beyond.

Celebrating Excellence; Celebrating Success

MIAD’s People and Programs

MIAD people – from faculty, staff and alumni to the Board of Trustees – fuel the college’s programmatic success; and MIAD programs fuel our students’ excellence. Following are highlights from 2022-2023.

Fashion and Apparel Design A recognized conduit to pattern, apparel and textile designers in the industry, MIAD formally announced its new fall 2023 major – Fashion and Apparel Design – at Creative Fusion: Fashion Forward on May 6, 2023. MIAD’s major explores fashion across gender, accessibility, size, trends and the future of the industry itself – distinguished by its focus on design, craft, sustainability, diversity and collaboration. 4 | MIAD 2022-2023 FRIENDS & DONORS REPORT

“MIAD’s Fashion and Apparel Design program is different in that it is completely reflective of the MIAD student, making it inclusive on a lot of levels.” Sarah Eichhorn, visiting instructor and curriculum developer of Fashion and Apparel Design

“I got a fashion design book for my 10th birthday, and a pair of Nike’s. [T]he access to the materials education at MIAD … is definitely one of the reasons this [Nike internship] is happening.” Emma May Travitz ’24 (Product Design), summer 2023 intern, Nike’s Global Apparel Materials (GLAM) Team

“Fashion can be so experimental, and right now, especially in the Midwest, we’re all about upcycling and recycling….” Chad Alexander ’24 (Fine Art + New Studio Practice), one of 25 students selected from the U.S. and Europe for the 2023 Yale Norfolk Summer Program.

Left: Julianna All ’23, "Fairy Top," altered garment, sequins, 2023.

“We do not try to replicate what other schools are doing that fall outside our focus areas, but instead strategically build on our strengths.” Deanna Tillisch, MIAD Board Chair; Our Creative Future Campaign Cabinet MIAD 2022-2023 FRIENDS & DONORS REPORT | 5

Design Excellence Among MIAD’s design accolades, in 2023, Animation Career Review named MIAD the #1 Graphic Design School in Wisconsin and in the top 7% of design schools in the Midwest. MIAD’s Animation program was named the top in the state, and the college’s Illustration program in the top ten in the Midwest. MIAD is the only college in Wisconsin included in that list.

“Marine Terminal Lofts residential studio," Ramirez's Gold Award-winning design.

“The Outback Yard,” Sedovic’s senior project based on the Kansas City Zoo.

“I was trying to figure out how to blend art, architecture and science, and MIAD was a place where I found I could do all three. I’ve … catered my MIAD experience to this job that I’ve always had as my career goal.” Jenna Sedovic ’23 (Interior Architecture and Design, and Illustration), zoological designer, WDM Architects 6 | MIAD 2022-2023 FRIENDS & DONORS REPORT

“Our three IAD classes … merged at the end of the semester, which allowed us to use all of our skills to make our apartment designs and presentations the best they could be.” Megan Ramirez ’25 (Interior Architecture and Design), Student Residential Design Gold Award, Wisconsin Design Excellence Awards hosted by the American Society of Interior Designers. MIAD students swept the awards in Student Residential Design; four MIAD alumni won a total of seven awards.

MIAD’s yearlong Design Internship Program for area highschoolers expanded in 2022-2023 to eight partners. Thank you!

2022-2023 Design Internship Program Partners:

“Loophole," Currie's senior project, is an app that curates second-hand clothing through an easy style survey allowing the user to practice sustainability and affordability.

“I grew a lot through my packaging design class. That taught me a lot about what I want to do and where my passions lie….” Catherine Currie ’23 (Communication Design), selected from among 1,500 national applicants for Nike’s summer graphic design internship.

Community Programming: On Campus and Beyond MIAD expanded its campus with the critically acclaimed opening of MIAD Gallery at The Ave; joined by the groundbreaking exhibition and programming on campus for “Art Against the Odds”; Service Learning Project on Black LGBTQ+ Milwaukeeans; and PBS special on the Veterans Print Project.

“We make art and design work accessible to all, and provide a supportive space for MIAD students, alumni, faculty and staff to show and sell their work in the heart of downtown Milwaukee.” Monica Miller ’13, MIAD Gallery at The Ave manager and adjunct fine arts faculty. The college’s first offsite gallery opened in April 2023 at 301 W. Wisconsin Ave. and was included in Midwest Living Magazine’s “10 Fresh Places to Eat, Drink, Play and Stay This Fall.” galleryattheave.miad.edu

“Knowing there’s a community out there for us to connect with and even go to, if necessary, that there are resources for us outside of MIAD, it’s really comforting.” Intan Zulkifli ’24 (Illustration), whose Service Learning class partnered with LGBT milWALKee on the House of History project to create portraits of interviewees, produce animations and posters, and design shirts.

“I feel because of my addiction issues, because of grief … to be able to take it and then to draw and to focus … allowed so much healing to take place both physically and emotionally.” John Tyson (CBS58, Feb. 12, 2023), one of 65 individuals from 20 Wisconsin prisons whose work was shown in the first-of-its kind exhibition “Art Against the Odds.” The exhibition, curated by Debra Brehmer, included over 200 works and premiered at MIAD from January 19 – March 11, 2023.

“I really didn’t know anything about veterans before this project, so just learning about Myron’s experience and how much they had to go through was impactful for me.” Fine Art major Grace Ranz ’24, who with Grey Higginbotham ’24 and Gregory Baranyk ’24, created a giant print on the Milwaukee Soldiers Home and Myron Webster, Native American artist and Viet Nam War veteran. The national Veterans Print Project has partnered with MIAD Professor Rina Yoon since 2018 (Milwaukee PBS 10thirtysix, April 20, 2023). MIAD receives inaugural grant from the Ruth Foundation for the Arts MIAD received an inaugural grant from the nationally recognized Ruth Foundation for the Arts (Ruth Arts) through its new Wisconsin Grants to Artists program to support research and development of work by individual artists. MIAD partnered with the foundation to create the Faculty and Staff Fine Arts Grant, which supports up to 15 full-time faculty and staff with amounts of $5,000 – $10,000 per individual. “To inaugurate this re-granting program, we selected three organizations with the infrastructure and expertise to connect with artists in the city,” said Ruth Arts Executive Director Karen Patterson in the foundation’s April 2023 release.

“We were doing our estate planning, and we thought, what happens when we're no longer around. We want to continue supporting this institution … and it was a very easy decision to make.” Robert Zimmermann and Thomas Derenne, MIAD Friends
