Youth Series Music for Me! Teen Series

Hello, teachers! As the Associate Conductor of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, I would like to extend an invitation to the 2013.14 Concerts for Schools. Since joining the Milwaukee Symphony in 2011, I have conducted concerts not only in Milwaukee, but also in Fish Creek, Marinette, West Bend, Ripon and throughout Wisconsin. I am enjoying the chance to explore our home state and getting to know the wonderful people who live here. I am so pleased to play an active role in our orchestra’s educational programs again next year. One concert for which I am especially eager is Link Up The Orchestra Sings. Link Up is a program of Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute that pairs orchestras across the country with students in grades 3-5 at schools in their local communities to explore orchestral repertoire through a year-long hands-on music curriculum. Students will get to sing and perform in the culminating concert! We’ve got exciting programs in store for students at all grade levels next season. Our two-part Youth Series, “Orchestral Colors”, explores how composers can use the colors within an orchestra to create a variety of sounds and images. Within this series, “Colors of Wisconsin” is inspired by my travels around this state, while “Symphonic Palette” takes a deeper look at the connections between art and music. We will go on a symphonic safari in “Music for Me!” and our Teen Series features favorite Romantic works, Fauré’s Requiem and Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet. This brochure has more information about our 2013.14 Concerts for Schools, as well as ticket information and registration information to ensure that your students will be in our audience. As conductor Leopold Stokowski said, “A painter paints his pictures on canvas, but musicians paint their pictures on silence.” I look forward to sharing our musical pictures with you and your students next season.

Composers and musicians create melodies, which can be sung or played on instruments. When an orchestra plays these melodies, the orchestra sings. Students explore melody in a range of colorful orchestral repertoire, sing, play the recorder or violin, compose and perform in a culminating concert!
