YOUTH SERIES
Designed for grades 3 through 8, the acclaimed MSO Youth Series uses orchestral masterworks to inspire students, promote active listening, and encourage critical thinking. These concerts align with state and national standards for music education, as well as connect to multiple subjects and disciplines.
The Composer is Dead: A Slightly Spooky Musical Mystery

Prelude Bernstein (arr. Peress): “Mambo” Brahms: Serenade No. 2 in A major, Op. 16, II. Scherzo Vivace Nathaniel Stookey: The Composer is Dead Can you solve this musical murder mystery? Students will be introduced to each section of the orchestra – from the sneaky strings to the tricky trombones – until at last the inspector can figure out who snuffed out the composer. The fun, family-friendly mystery The Composer is Dead features music by Nathaniel Stookey and text by Lemony Snicket.

Recycling Rhapsody: Composers Reuse and Recycle, Too! Tue FEB 9 & Wed FEB 10, 2021 | 10:30 am & 12:00 Pm Bradley Symphony Center Ken-David Masur, conductor Student hosts, TBA Repertoire to include: Copland: Variations on a Shaker Melody Beethoven: Symphony No. 5, Movement 1 Mahler: Symphony No. 1 in D Major, Movement 3 Stravinksy: Firebird Suite, Finale Did you know that composers often reuse and recycle music? It’s true! This fascinating concert explores the ways that a composer can recycle a musical idea into something new and different. Students will learn about themes, motives, variations and more by listening to famous examples such as Copland’s Variations on a Shaker Melody and the Finale from Stravinksy’s Firebird Suite. Recycling Rhapsody also celebrates the reuse of the nearly-abandoned Warner Grand Theater as the brand new Bradley Symphony Center! This concert will feature the 2020 Audrey G. Link Up: The Orchestra Moves

Wendy’s playful forecast introduces students to the ways music can sound like a peaceful morning, a sudden storm, softly falling snow and more, using dynamics such as piano (quiet) and FORTE (loud). TEEN CONCERT The Teen Choral Partners project returns with MSO Music Director Ken-David Masur at the helm! The performance will take place in our brand new Bradley Symphony Center. This concert experience is curated especially for middle and high school audiences. In addition, each student will receive his or her own Teen Guide specifically created for this concert.

Magnificent Mozart Wed MAR 17, 2021 10:30 am Bradley Symphony Center Ken-David Masur, conductor Featuring guest choruses from Wisconsin high schools Mozart: Overture to The Magic Flute Mozart (completed Sussmayer): Requiem (abridged) Mozart did not live to hear his Requiem completed; a student put the finishing touches on what has since become one of the most beloved pieces in all of choral music. Join the Teen Choral Partners, MSO Music Director Ken-David Masur, and the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra as they present excerpts from this magnificent musical masterpiece. Docents In conjunction with Forte, the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra’s Volunteer League, the MSO offers free docent visits leading up to the Youth and Music for Me! concerts. Our docents are passionate about the orchestra and trained by the area’s finest music educators. Docents arrange a time to visit your school, bringing fun activities and lessons corresponding to the performance. For more information, email edu@mso.org Chaperones One complimentary chaperone ticket is offered for every ten paid student tickets. Educational Materials Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra Teacher Resource Guides provide background information about the music and composers, and lesson plans in a full-color, digital format. Lesson plans support Common Core and Wisconsin State Standards in music, English language arts, and other subject areas. Spotify playlists are created for each concert.
