Our 30s Festival pays homage to the music you would have heard in the era when the Warner Theater first opened. Scores for the silver screen, jazz, swing, big band, and symphonic music with an industrial vibe are part of the mix.

A playful production with props, a puppet, and plenty of fun. The orchestra, along with the Milwaukee Symphony Chorus and other co-conspirators, offer an imaginative, semi-staged take on Grieg’s music and Ibsen’s drama. A morality tale amusingly told, the spectacular features the immediately recognizable “In the Hall of the Mountain King.” Altogether, a concert that will be, dare we say it, peerless.

WELCOMING A UNIQUE MUSICAL TALENT FOR AN EX TENDED STAY
Beginning this fall, the MSO will host Artistic Partners. The initiative will explore new and exciting musical territory. Stay tuned for concerts and more intimate gatherings with our very first Artistic Partner, pianist Aaron Diehl, a long-time collaborator of Ken-David Masur. Our musical world is about to expand!

MSO MUSICIAN PROFILES Most of the time you see them formally attired, a swath of black across the stage. They want the music to stand out, not themselves. And it most certainly does! But MSO musicians are a colorful group, each with distinct interests and pursuits in addition to music. There simply would be no symphony without them, and we are thrilled to showcase them with informal portraits throughout this guide and in other materials you’ll see during the season. The photos were taken by one of our own, English Horn player Margaret Butler. We hope they reveal a little something of the people behind the musicians.
“ One of my passions outside of music is photography, and I was delighted to take these snaps of my fellow musicians in more personal settings.” - Margaret Butler, English Horn

Welcome back to experiencing music together! The 2021.22 season begins with energetic and joyful music, including the upbeat jazz of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, the hopeful message of Ellington’s New World A-Comin’, the sheer drama of Stravinsky’s Firebird suite, and James B. Wilson’s poetic exploration of a flower blossoming against all odds. This can’tmiss program opens with a commissioned world premiere by composer Eric Nathan — a fitting choice, as his music contains “a nod to the Classics with an eye to the present and future” (Arts-Louisville).
ANNA THORVALDSDOTTIR Aeriality BRUCH Violin Concerto No. 1 RACHMANINOFF Symphonic Dances
“Aeriality refers to the state of gliding through the air with nothing or little to hold on to – as if flying – and the music both portrays the feeling of absolute freedom,” says composer Anna Thorvaldsdottir of her spellbinding work which opens these concerts. The program continues with one of the most legendary and beloved works for the instrument: Bruch’s Violin Concerto, performed here by current Artistic Advisor and former Concertmaster Frank Almond, returning to the MSO stage. Rachmaninoff’s final composition, Symphonic Dances, is an orchestral suite in three movements: a frantic dance with Russian flair, a restless and colorful waltz, and finally a struggle ending with a great triumph.

Guest conductor Thomas Wilkins leads Hanson’s “Romantic” Symphony; this symphony’s fingerprints can be found in movies such as Alien, which borrowed its theme, and E.T., which John Williams modeled after this symphony. A visit to the countryside and a pleasant, babbling brook. A “merry gathering” of friends and neighbors. A sudden downpour and, finally, feelings of “thanks to the Deity.” This is the path Beethoven charts through his Sixth Symphony, titled “Pastoral” after its idyllic country setting; listen for birdsong, thunder, and the call of the shepherds. Music Director Laureate Edo de Waart returns to conduct this icon. In the first half, MSO Principal Cello Susan Babini performs Elgar’s poignant Cello Concerto.

This is no Peer Gynt you’ve ever experienced before! In this semistaged adaptation, conductor Ken-David Masur and director Bill Barclay reunite Grieg’s unforgettable music (including the immediately recognizable “In the Hall of the Mountain King” and “Morning Mood”) with a fun and modern take on Ibsen’s drama. This creative team has assembled eight costumed actors, a playful puppet, props, the Milwaukee Symphony Chorus, and more to create an expansive staged spectacle — all to tell the outlandish tale of Peer Gynt, a hopeless yarn-spinner who lies and sneaks his way through many misadventures and ultimately learns his lesson.
In The Dharma at Big Sur, composer John Adams invokes the majesty of his adopted Pacific Coast and the way “the current pounds and smashes... in a slow, lazy rhythm of terrifying power.” He wrote his Dharma specifically for “the greatest living exponent of the electric violin” (BBC Radio), Tracy Silverman, who performs here against a backdrop of evocative projected visuals by cinematographer Adam Larsen.

Music Director Laureate Edo de Waart invites piano legend Ronald Brautigam to perform Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 25 in C major, widely considered to be of Mozart’s greatest masterpieces in the concerto genre. Variations plays upon a theme which Brahms believed — erroneously, it turns out — to have been written by Haydn. (The Variations are charming nonetheless, and Brahms adds some authentic Haydn into the finale.) In his dramatic Coriolan Overture, Beethoven alludes to a Roman general bent on war; in one touching theme, Coriolan’s mother pleads for peace.

Singin’ in the Rain, named the Greatest Movie Musical of all time by the American Film Institute, comes to life with spectacular accompaniment by the MSO. Experience award-winning performances by Gene Kelly, Donald O’Connor, and Debbie Reynolds in this lighthearted story of silent film actors making the transition to “talkies.” This charming film features song-and-dance numbers such as “Make ’Em Laugh,” “All I Do is Dream of You,” “Good Morning,” the iconic title track, and more.
Between her two Academy Awards®, ten Grammys®, five Emmys®, nine Golden Globes® and more, the inimitable vocalist Barbra Streisand needs no introduction. Guest artist Ann Hampton Callaway is not only an accomplished singer and actress in her own right, but a songsmith as well; in fact, Callaway has written many songs for Barbra Streisand, including “At the Same Time” and “I’ve Dreamed of You.” In this powerful concert experience, Callaway plumbs the depths of Streisand’s songbook, performing hits such as “People,” “The Way We Were,” “Don’t Rain on My Parade,” and more.
