Variations plays upon a theme which Brahms believed — erroneously, it turns out — to have been written by Haydn.

SOMEI SATOH Saga From Me Flows What You Call Time TAKEMITSU RIMSKY-KORSAKOV Scheherazade

JEAN-FRÉDÉRIC NEUBURGER Aube Cello Concerto in D minor LALO FRANCK Symphony in D minor

In Eastern folklore, Scheherazade told the cruel Sultan 1,001 stories in order to save her own life. Rimsky-Korsakov borrows Scheherazade’s tales of princesses, festivals, sea voyages, and more in his richly orchestrated and Far Eastern-flavored fantasy. Grammy®-winning ensemble Third Coast Percussion takes the stage for Toru Takemitsu’s visually captivating From Me Flows What You Call Time, which calls for unusual bells suspended from the ceiling and played using long, colorful ribbons.

Franck’s most endearing work is his symphony, though its legacy took some time — the French found it “too German,” critics found it too modern (including the “unthinkable” use of English horn). Lucky for us, audiences soon warmed to its genius. Edgar Moreau brings “angelic purity of tuning and impeccable fast finger-work” (The Telegraph ) to the impassioned cello concerto by Édouard Lalo, rounding out this delightful French program.

This creative team has assembled eight costumed actors, a playful puppet and props, the Milwaukee Symphony Chorus, and more to create an expansive staged spectacle — all to tell the outlandish tale of Peer Gynt, a hopeless yarn-spinner who lies and sneaks his way through many misadventures and ultimately learns his lesson.

JANÁCEK Jealousy DVORÁK Violin Concerto SMETANA The Moldau KODÁLY Suite from Háry János

Dvorák is known for infusing his music with his native Bohemian folk melodies. His Violin Concerto, a hallmark of violin repertoire, is a prime example of that classic Dvorák style, especially in its dance-filled finale. Ruth Reinhardt, “a conductor with strong ideas of her own” (The Seattle Times ), also leads Smetana’s beloved Moldau, as well as a suite from Kodály’s comic opera Háry János ; Kodály’s Háry is a boastful veteran soldier who “sits at the tavern spinning yarns about his heroic exploits.”

Happy birthday, Beethoven! The MSO joins the world in celebrating the 250th birthday of this legendary composer. Ken-David Masur conducts Beethoven’s Seventh, a rousing symphony originally performed as a benefit for wounded soldiers. Currier composed Aether expressly for violinist Baiba Skride; “aether” refers to fresh air, or in Currier’s words, “the air the gods breathe.”
