WELCOME BACK AARON DIEHL MSO 2022.23 ARTISTIC PARTNER We’re delighted that pianist and composer Aaron Diehl joins us for a second season as MSO Artistic Partner. Aaron’s eclectic interests manifest themselves in a repertoire that spans Monk to Ravel, Gershwin to William Grant Still. In addition to recording three critically-acclaimed albums, Aaron has appeared live at Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Village Vanguard, the New York Philharmonic, and the Philharmonie de Paris. This season, Aaron displays his versatility on Gershwin’s Concerto in F, Copland’s cowboy ballet Rodeo, and the lyrical Symphony No. 2 by William Grant Still, often called “the dean of African-American composers.” Aaron also shows his jazz chops on Mary Lou Williams’s Zodiac Suite, premiering the complete version for full orchestra, after having presented four of the sections with the New York Philharmonic in 2021.
I look forward to collaborating with the MSO for a second season and creating music that brings people together. - Aaron Diehl

Fanfare (Co-Commission) Concerto for Two Pianos in E major Eine Alpensinfonie
The MSO opens with a brassy co-commissioned Fanfare from acclaimed trumpeter and composer Wynton Marsalis, and ends with Strauss’s massive tone poem An Alpine Symphony, depicting scenes along an adventurous hike through the Alps. Accomplished twin sister pianists Christina and Michelle Naughton honor the 175th anniversary of Mendelssohn’s death with his Concerto for Two Pianos, a captivating work written at the prodigious age of 15. This project is supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts.

Rodeo Symphony No. 2 “Song of a New Race” Concerto in F
This distinctly American program features pianist and composer Aaron Diehl, kicking off his second season as the MSO’s artistic partner with Gershwin’s Concerto in F. Copland’s cowboy ballet Rodeo is a joyful romp through the American West in this symphonic suite. William Grant Still, often called “the dean of African-American composers,” wrote his lyrical Symphony No. 2 as a depiction of the Black experience and a vision of an integrated society. This project is supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts.

Initially dedicated to Napoleon Bonaparte, the revised title “Eroica” (“Heroic”) suits Beethoven’s grand symphony of tension, energy, and triumph. Currier composed the delicate and mesmerizing Aether expressly for Latvian violinist Baiba Skride, premiered in 2019; “aether” refers to fresh air, or in Currier’s words, “the air the gods breathe.” A tone poem by Sibelius opens the program, his rousing and rhythmic Night Ride and Sunrise.

BRAHMS Gesang der Parzen BRAHMS Schicksalslied IMAN HABIBI Jeder Baum spricht SCHUMANN Symphony No. 1 “Spring” BRAHMS Academic Festival Overture
Italian conductor Jader Bignamini leads this concert of passionate melodies and technical feats. Coleridge-Taylor’s Ballade conjures a lush and sweeping romantic theme. Up-and-coming Canadian-born violinist Blake Pouliot applies his “immaculate, at once refined and impassioned” (ArtsAtlanta) style to Paganini’s strikingly complex and virtuosic concerto. Tchaikovsky’s soul-stirring symphony showcases the full orchestra in the second half.
In an ode to the wonder of our natural world, this program reflects on fate, resolve, and reverence. Contemporary composer Iman Habibi’s Jeder Baum spricht (“every tree speaks,” taken from Beethoven’s writings) is a reflection of our world’s environmental crisis. Schumann’s symphony is a celebration of spring and renewal. In the second half, the Milwaukee Symphony Chorus takes the spotlight in three choral works moving through grim fatalism, hopeful spirit, and rollicking celebration.

The MSO’s 3-week Water Festival opens with a splash – Tan Dun’s concerto brings water front and center as an integral percussion element to create an enthralling orchestral experience for the eyes and ears. Smetana’s symphonic poem captures the love of his Czech homeland, while Hailstork evokes the bustling energy of a busy port city. Britten’s Four Sea Interludes close the program with coastal scenes from his towering, stormy opera Peter Grimes.
Suite from Naïs RAMEAU BOTTESINI Concerto for Double Bass No. 2 HANDEL Water Music Suite No. 1
The MSO’s Water Festival continues with Rameau’s Suite from Naïs, his French Baroque opera depicting the sea god Neptune’s love story with the eponymous water nymph. The operatic nature persists with the virtuosic Concerto for Double Bass, performed by MSO’s own Principal Bass Jon McCullough-Benner. Handel’s jubilant Water Music, originally written for performance on the River Thames for King George I, fills Allen-Bradley Hall with gorgeous flowing melody.

The MSO’s Water Festival concludes with waves of beautiful sound showcased by MSO principal musicians. Takemitsu’s homage to the sea features alto flute, harp, and strings to evoke the “spiritual domain” of water and nature, while Ludwig’s concerto for bassoon captures the poetic fluidity of water as it relates to life. Debussy’s iconic La mer, inspired by the rich and shifting moods of the Mediterranean Sea, closes the program.
British pianist Stephen Hough brings “the most perfect piano playing conceivable” (The Guardian) to Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2, a towering masterpiece of tempestuous melodies and harmonic tensions. Bartók’s Dance Suite transitions the program to harmony and unification in his celebratory work of Hungarian folk-style melodies, commemorating the merging of Buda and Pest into the nation’s capital. Bizet’s Carmen Suite steps up the dancing theme with a seductive Spanish flair.

The Polish folkloric style of Lutoslawski’s Concerto for Orchestra draws together regional melodies with transformative harmonies and textures.
