– WHATEVER YOU WANT TO CALL IT, YELLOW IS THE HAPPIEST SHADE IN THE SPECTRUM SET TO UPLIFT ANY SPRING WARDROBE.

JA DE CH ILTO N Style Director

RACHEL BASSET T “Some say blondes and yellow don’t go. I say bring on the warmth. In my opinion honeyed locks, sun-kissed freckled skin and soft yellow hues are a match made in paradise. Be warned, blondes may run the risk of fading in to the look; add a zingy pair of orange shades et voilà, a fruity cocktail!”

Stylist & Writer

“A sunshine yellow maxi dress might scream ‘vaycay’ on the hanger, but when I’m not eating paella on a beach somewhere, I’ll tone the shade down with a light wash masculine denim jacket and stilettos.”

How does your day begin? During the week, I wake up at 6:45am, but to open my eyes, I need coffee. Then it’s breakfast with my 17-year-old son, usually a piece of toast with orange juice. When he leaves for school I get ready listening to the radio. Define the Sandro woman in three words? Chic, confident, effortless. What inspired the playful direction of the new accessory collection? We really went further into the creative process. The technical and inspiration searches were very elaborate. Previously, we proposed accessories to complete our ready-to-wear collection, now it’s a complete line. The final ambition is for them to have an independent life. How do you use accessories to transform an outfit? You have to pick the correct accessory to go with the right outfit. The most casual looks can be transformed with the help of a few key accessories to take basic to street style to evening wear, in literally a few seconds with just one item. What’s your must-have for the season ahead? I wanted to adapt our handbag collection to our daily needs, a bit like RTW. And the Lou bag was designed as an adaptable bag that can be worn with our dress at night, but also casually during the daytime. Do you prefer flats or heels? Since I always have to run everywhere, I like to feel at ease in what I wear especially when I’m working – therefore I prefer flats. Is there any advice you wish you’d known back when you were starting the brand? None! I wouldn’t change a thing. What’s the next big thing for Sandro? An It-bag! BOOTS DHS1,350

dress made from recycled plastic bottles? We never would’ve guessed. H&M are one of the latest retailers to move towards recycling shoreline waste and turning it into a yarn called Bionic, to manufacture their latest Conscious Exclusive collection. From embroidered box jackets to printed skirts and layered flared trousers H&M is proving that sustainability does have style. Creative Director Pernilla Wohlfahrt talks to EW on the inspiration behind the collection, how the brand is changing the way we think about fashion, and their latest foray into eco-beauty.

56 EMIRATES WOMAN APRIL 2017

The collection is created with inspiration from the human senses playing on the idea of how the clothes look, feel and sound. Embellishment is also an important part of the collection. Large sequins warp the surfaces and make their own music, tiny beads create movement and shape, while the jacquards and embroideries create dimension. Bionic yarn uses the same techniques as normal yarn. We are still able to create beautiful garments without compromising on style or quality. At H&M we aim to work with more and more sustainable materials each year. We have a giant platform in the fashion industr y and we are using our voice to educate and introduce Bionic and other re-usable materials to a large audience. We chose Natalia Vodianova as the face of the campaign as she has great style and a personal interest in, and commitment to

sustainability. This makes her the perfect face and ambassador for this collection. We have introduced organic per fume oils into this year’s Conscious Exclusive collection. This builds on from our Beauty range of conscious products which already include lip balms and body lotions. Will we delve into make-up products? We’re not ruling it out… My must-have pieces from the collection include all of the flower printed dresses, which are perfect for summer parties and the tuxedo jacket for a more smarter look. I will be accessorising the Bionic dress with a pair of sandy coloured sandals and simple bangles. The dress is such a standout piece I’ll be letting it speak for itself. My motto? If you do what you love, you will be successful. Q

f the hit US show Girls has taug ht us any thing about female fr iendship, it’s that platonic relationships can be just as deep and binding as romantic ones. Lena Dunham, the show’s creator has said: “I think about my best fr iendship – which the MarnieHannah fr iendship in Girls is based on – as like a g reat romance of my young life.” Meanwhile, actress Michelle Williams has also draw n parallels between her long-standing fr iendship w ith her former Daw son’s Creek co-star Busy Phillips and romantic love. “I’m so in love w ith her,” she has said. “She’s proof that the love of your life does not have to be a man! That’s the love of my life r ig ht there.” It’s a theme that was recently explored in Rebecca Traister’s best-selling book, All the Sing le Ladies: Unmar r ied Women and the Rise of an Independent Nation, which was recently optioned for US TV. Traister argues that the r ising numbers of sing le women (there are now more sing le women liv ing in Amer ica than mar r ied ones) has ser ved to deepen the bonds of female fr iendships w ith many now outlasting romantic relationships. f you are like most people, there are things you do with tech that could use some tweaking. Strengthening your password security, for one, would benefit you tremendously in an era when hacks are rife. For another, purging the e-junk you have accumulated over the years would help the environment and your sanity. While you’re at it, start doing maintenance on your electronics to make sure they work as smoothly as possible.

Clean up your password hygiene What’s that smell? It’s your bad password hygiene! You are probably using the same password across multiple websites for banking, shopping, social media and email. That’s understandable – a person can only memorise so many passwords. But in 2016, Yahoo reminded everybody that reusing passwords is a very bad idea, after it revealed that 500 million Yahoo accounts were compromised in 2014, in addition to 1 billion accounts that were hacked in 2013. If your Yahoo account 64 EMIRATES WOMAN APRIL 2017

password was the same as ones you used elsewhere, those accounts were vulnerable, too. Don’t become another statistic this year. Spend time logging into each of your accounts and creating unique, strong passwords. To make this easier, use applications like LastPass or 1Password, which are password-managing apps that let you use one master password to unlock a vault of passwords to log in to all of your online accounts. They also automatically generate strong passwords for you. Then add an extra layer of protection by enabling twofactor verification on your accounts whenever the option is available. When you enter your password, you will receive a message (usually an SMS) with a one-time code that you must enter before logging in. Taking these two simple steps will help safeguard you from the inevitable hacks that arise this year.

but a little maintenance can make them feel brand new. First, check the condition of your batteries. With iPhone and iPads, you can hook the devices up to a Mac and run the app coconutBattery, which reveals battery statistics. With Android devices, you can use the app Battery by MacroPinch. If your battery is on its last legs, it’s time to order a new one or schedule an appointment at a repair shop to replace it. If your devices feel sluggish, freeing up some storage can also make a dramatic difference. Start by purging apps you never use anymore. Then do something about those photos you never look at. Back up all of your photos to the cloud using services like Google Photos and then delete them from your device to start afresh. Show your gadgets some TLC, too. Give your screens a good wipe with a damp cloth. If you own a desktop computer, open it up Maintain your and use compressed air to blow out the dust. Carry out this basic maintenance every six devices After regular use, our smartphones and months and your devices will run smoothly computers start to feel sluggish and short-lived, for many years.

WORDS: BRAIN X.CHEN, NEW YORK TIMES

Mind your infrastructure We don’t hesitate to buy new smartphones every two years but that neglected, ugly Wi-Fi router tucked away in the corner of the living room may be the most important tech product to upgrade every few years. Among all tech headaches, there is nothing more annoying than a sluggish, spotty Internet connection. Start off by checking your Internet infrastructure. If your router is more than three years old, you probably need a new one that is compatible with today’s faster, smarter wireless standards. If you are relying on a router supplied by your broadband provider, you should probably buy a more powerful stand-alone router. The Wirecutter, a product recommendations website owned by The New York Times, recommends TP-Link’s Archer C7 as the best router for most people. (If you have less technical know-how, try the Wi-Fi system from Eero, which offers a smartphone app that holds your hand through the network setup).

Be less wasteful Unused gadgets and power cables take up lots of space in drawers and attics. This e-waste would be better off sold or donated to someone in need, or recycled for their precious metals. Spring clean your home and throw unwanted junk out of your life. Companies like Amazon and Gazelle offer headache-free trade-in services for selling used electronics. Just punch in the gadget you are trying to trade in, like a used iPhone or Samsung Galaxy device, and the sites offer a quote for how much money or Amazon store credit you can get in exchange for the gear. Then pack up the outdated hardware, slap on a shipping label, drop it off at a shipping center and wait for the money to roll in. There is bound to be unsellable e-junk in your pile. Fortunately, all Best Buy locations will recycle your used electronics for free. Just bag the items up and drop them off at the store’s customer service counter, and the retailer will take care of the rest.

Be a smarter shopper To get great deals on electronics, carefully research high-quality items and buy them when their prices drop. This technique can be used when online shopping for just about anything, but especially for tech products that decrease in price as they age. Web tools like Camel Camel Camel and Keepa make price tracking on Amazon.com easy. On their websites, just do a search on the name of the item, and the sites will pull up a price history. From there, you can create a tracker to alert you via email whenever a price drops to a desired amount. Another way to save money is to consider buying used products. Look out for sales of used or refurbished electronics from reputable brands. Before you buy a used item, read about its condition carefully. Often, products sold as used were barely touched before a customer returned them, or they were restored to good-as-new condition by a refurbishing centre. There are always good deals to be had; you just have to know how to spot them. Q APRIL 2017 EMIRATES WOMAN 65

bsentmindedly munching your way through an entire packet of biscuits while engrossed in Netflix could be considered a late night ‘snaccident’ but, for a growing number of people in the UAE, compulsive eating is putting their health at risk. “The precise prevalence of eating disorders in the MENA region is difficult to pinpoint, but anecdotal evidence and cultural factors suggest it may be higher than in other parts of the world,” says Carine el Khazen, Clinical Psychologist of American Center for Psychiatry and Neurology (ACPN), which runs an eating disorders outpatient service at its branches in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah. “We are seeing a rising number of adults affected by binge eating, which results in the same health risks associated with clinical obesity, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and type 2 diabetes. The disorder also has an impact on

102 EMIRATES WOMAN APRIL 2017

relationships with family, friends and colleagues, causing sufferers to feel more isolated. Plus, binge eaters are also at a greater risk of psychiatric issues such as anxiety and depression. This it what makes it challenging to spot and, in turn, to be able to encourage those who are affected to seek help.” According to Middle East Eating Disorders Association (MEEDA), binge eating disorder (BED) is characterised by excessive eating in a short space of time – even when the person isn’t hungry. Binges are usually planned – almost like a ritual – with special foods being eaten in private. Unlike other eating disorders such as bulimia, however, binge-eating episodes aren’t followed by purging, like making yourself sick or taking laxatives, as an attempt to control weight. Both men and women can be affected and it’s most commonly experienced in those aged 20 to 40.

Complex causes The reasons why binge eating disorder develops can be complex, with emotional and even cultural triggers among the most common culprits. “In many cases, BED links back to an emotional trigger that occurred in childhood before the age of seven,” says Naser Al Riyami, a clinical psychologist who specialises in hypnosis and neuro-linguistic psychology at online wellness resource Enritsch (enritsch.com). “If you were upset as a child and your grandmother fed you your favourite food to feel better, for instance, this can develop into compulsive eating as a way to process stress in adulthood. “There is also a wave of people in the UAE who have come from war-torn countries where food was sparse at some point in their youth and who now binge eat regularly because they subconsciously fear that food could be cut off again at some point,” he adds. BED can also be due to a physiological issue, such as ‘hunger hormones’ failing to flag when you are full and satisfied, or simply bad habits spiralling out of control. “In some cultures, there is also the habit of overfeeding babies as there is the belief that the chubbier the baby is, the more likely he or she is to survive,” says Naser. “Again, in adulthood this can manifest in overeating as a reaction to stressful situations.” Low self-esteem, feeling guilty or ashamed and socially isolated can all be part of the picture. “The relationship between weight, size and health is a complex one,” explains Carine. “Raising awareness of the common signs and symptoms of binge eating disorder, however, is an important step toward HOW TO helping those affected to get the support and treatment SPOT BINGE they need.” E AT I N G DISORDER

Road to recovery

Common sig ns of BED, a ccord i n g to M E E DA .

Generally speaking, if someone binges at least once a week over a period of three months or more, they could have BED. “Often people don’t recognise they have a problem until an associated health problem stops them in their tracks and their doctor picks up on it,” says Naser. “Usually, uncovering body dysmorphic disorder in patients can help reveal it.” If you think that you or a friend may be affected, take the ACPC Eating Attitudes Test, which measures the symptoms and characteristics of eating disorder and can help pinpoint red flags for BED. “The next step would be to refer these patients to a clinical psychologist in order for a confirmed diagnosis to be made and a treatment plan developed,” says Carine.

“It’s advisable to stop any weight loss measures the patient is currently taking as this can actually be triggering the binge eating as, when the body feels deprived, it will demand food as a survival instinct. We can then turn to psychotherapy to help tackle the emotional aspect. If the individual is overweight or needs to lose weight for medical reasons, this can be addressed once the binge eating has been treated and resolved through sustainable and realistic lifestyle changes that can be stuck to in the long term.” “Instead of turning to surgery as a solution that effectively punishes people for binge eating through a form of aversion therapy – stomach stapling to stamp out overeating, for instance – it’s kinder and more effective if the emotional aspects

are addressed,” agrees Naser. “Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) can help, as can hypnosis, by helping to shed light on the triggers and reprogramming the mind so that when those familiar feelings arise we can choose to manage them in a different way rather than overindulging in food. Learning more about nutrition can also be a useful tool. “Many people count calories but have no idea about the nutrition they are getting from food,” says Naser. “It’s important to have a balance of minerals such as zinc and copper in the body, for instance, as it can have a marked effect on behaviour. Only when people learn these new habits and start putting them into practise can they break free from the unhealthy cycle of binge eating and move on to leading a healthier life.” Q !02), %-)2!4%3 7/-!. 105

rom pesticide residues in our fruit and vegetables, to hormone-disrupting chemicals in household cleaning products, it can be exhausting trying to keep up with the latest health warnings for everyday items. The truth is, synthetic chemicals can be found in everything from food to cosmetics, furniture, electronics and even our childrens’ toys. While many of these chemicals are widely considered to be harmless, numerous studies have shown that they could pose a threat to our health. A recent study by the University of Buffalo indicates that exposure to insecticides could put us at a higher risk of developing diabetes* while a University of Alabama study has found that parabens may increase the risk of developing breast cancer**. While it’s difficult to avoid coming into contact with synthetic chemicals completely, learning about those that are considered to be potentially harmful can help you make informed decisions about what to buy.

JULY 23 TO AUGUST 22

Four planets stall just long enough for you to take a break. Despite recent successes, a time-out is called for. Watch, too, for the chance to make the best of your creativity. Being with the right people at the right time can make all the difference. Venus may also introduce a new friendship or romance. If it’s someone older, a lasting fascination seems likely.

Virgo

Sagittarius NOVEMBER 22 TO DECEMBER 21

April encourages you to follow your heart. You may be feeling restless, but don’t try to force things to happen. It’s often easier to go with the flow. Should obstacles appear, view them as opportunities. Life is a dance, so choose the rhythm that offers you greatest joy, and take comfort in fact that all paths lead to the same place – your greatest good.

Y OUR FORECAST FOR THE MONTH OF APRIL

AUGUST 23 TO SEPTEMBER 22

Taurus APRIL 21 TO MAY 20

April presents a paradox. Even with the best of intentions, you may not be able to keep your mind off love. Keep in mind that you don’t have to act on every romantic thought. As much as you dream, you might find yourself outside your comfort zone. Don’t worry, this is an out of the ordinary situation. Revel in it while it lasts.

Leo

Money becomes more abundant, although there’s a temptation to spend up. But what’s life for, if not to enjoy? You sense a growing social camaraderie and will want to be part of it. Nothing feels impossible or out of reach. Blessed with more confidence, you can turn most situations to your advantage. Love could tag alongside professional pursuits.

Cancer JUNE 22 TO JULY 22

You’ve lingered on a decision long enough – now, it’s time for action. There’s no arguing that it pays to be prepared, and that practice makes perfect, but the big question is: are you ready to give it a try? You’ll only know by taking that proverbial leap of faith. If tensions do exist, they seem more to do with family or children. In love matters, the 11th’s full moon opens up romantic possibilities.

The upward progress you’ve been experiencing continues. Although you crave rest, continue to push ahead and don’t shy away from the occasional risk – some may be worth taking. You also realise that letting others mistreat you is a form of self-abuse, something you’ll no longer tolerate. Live your truth.

Libra SEPTEMBER 23 TO OCTOBER 22

It seems the more you do this month, the more you get to do – but the same theme applies to spending. You may find that one purchase warrants another – not great for your bank balance. It seems that your love life looks just as casual. You’re free to attract whomever you want, but choose friends carefully. Some have claws, others stings. It’s a wild world out there.

Scorpio

Capricorn DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 19

Feeling tired? Little wonder. You can’t keep burning the candle at both ends, and then be surprised when the flame burns out. Nurturing yourself can help bring back your usual sparkle. The world won’t fall apart if you take a few weeks’ rest. You’ll be back in the thick of it soon enough. Before then, take a holiday - you never know who you might meet.

Aquarius JANUARY 20 TO FEBRUARY 18

This month, short-term plans attract interest. Mars offers financial opportunities, but asks for patience. Delayed gratification isn’t usually your style but persistence will pay high dividends. In matters of the heart, singles attract someone special. For couples, there could be pressure to fall in line with a partner. If so, maintain independence and equality.

OCTOBER 23 TO NOVEMBER 21

There’s a delightful contentment to April that you should enjoy. Sure, there’s much to do, but your workload won’t seem so much of a burden. Around the 19th, you instinctively put yourself in the right place at the right time. Communications flow smoothly, and you find inspiration in innovative ideas. Projects initiated earlier this year may also come to profitable fruition.

Pisces FEBRUARY 19 TO MARCH 20

To achieve anything, you have to be willing to take calculated risks. Knowledge is counterweight to risk: the more you know, the lower the risk. This applies to everything from crossing the road, to changing your life. And that’s what April is all about. It’s a time of learning, personal transformation and daring to be different. Q
