“Giving of form is far more than the making of shapes, or creation of beautiful or aesthetically pleasing objects in themselves. But rather it is the presentation of order.” - Peter Eisenman 2004 The concept of form in this text represents a substance other than its conventionally aesthetic associations. It is a means to look at the city’s structure through a societal scope; a way to question architecture’s contribution to collective mentality. Its precise ability to mutate physical context is also that which allows it to be an intellectual influence on the individual and on the collective. Comprised of selected theories and readings, the following aims to build a discourse on how we may view the composition of our cities. It uses ‘The Porosity Paradigm’ as a structure for analysis; the term evokes relevant formal associations and its constituent parts provide chapter titles for discussion. Without a formal strategy we risk losing sight of the fundamental values that connect us to context. Simple dismissal of its significance only perpetuates ignorance to a conversation in dire need of attention.
