DENGUE ALERT IS UP
THE CITY HEALTH Office has expressed alarm over the rising numbers of den- gue cases following the deaths of over a dozen people since January.
Dr. Dulce Miravite, who heads the City Health Office, has confirmed the fatalities and although alarmed by the increasing number of cases, she said it has not reached epidemic level.
But Miravite was quick to say that steps are needed to prevent the spread of the deadly virus caused by female mosquito bites, particularly the species Aedes aegypti, and to a lesser extent, the
Aedes albopictus and the mosquito also transmits chikungunya, yellow fever and Zika infection, according the World Health Organization.
Mosquitoes can lay eggs in any space or container that holds clear and stagnant water and they usually bite between 2 hours after sunrise and 2 hours before sunset and can be found inside and outside the house.
Miravite urged residents to clean their surroundings and destroy mosquito breeding grounds in stagnant water such as in tires, tin cans or canals. She said water storage at home should also be properly covered.
“El de aton water storage, si tiene man kita ta recuhi agua, necesita tapa,” Miravite said. “Hace seco el areredor, si tiene agua tan pondo, puede pone larvicide.”
She said larvicides - an insecticide that is specifically targeted against the larval life stage of an insect - are available at the City Health Office. Miravite advised residents to wear long sleeved shirts and long pants and apply insect repellents to protect them from mosquito bites, especially when outdoors.
President Rodrigo Duterte recently signed Republic Act No. 11332 or the Mandatory Reporting of Notifiable Diseases and Health Events of Public Health Concern Act requiring the reporting of public health concerns and events such as infectious diseases and epidemics.
The law aims to protect the population from public health threats through mandatory reporting, disease surveillance, and an effective response system. It tasks the Department of Health, specifically its Epidemiology Bureau, to regularly update and issue a list of nationally notifiable diseases or ailments that must be reported to the public.
Response systems include protocols for reporting of diseases, measures for data security and confidentiality, and procedures and provisions to ensure the safety of personnel conducting disease surveillance and response activities. The new measure requires the Department of Health and its local counterparts to provide accurate and timely health information about notifiable diseases and health-related events and conditions to the public and health providers.
The law also allows municipal, city, and provincial health offices to declare a disease outbreak within their respective areas as long as the declaration is backed by scientific evidence.
The symptoms of dengue infection include sudden onset of fever of 2 to 7 days, headache, body weakness, joint and muscle pains, pain behind the eyes, loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, and skin rashes.
It is important to seek early consultation between 1-3 days of fever to immediately recognize the disease, which may require the patient to increase fluid intake, especially oral rehydration solution that is proven to be life-saving for dengue patients. (Zamboanga Post)
City Council remains independent
MAYOR BENG CLIMACO reiterated anew her vow not to interfere in the legislative branch and pointed out that under her administration the City Council shall remain an independent collegiate body.
She said the City Council shall continue to follow the laws, rules and regulations, and internal rules and procedures for the august members to collectively agree, disagree and jointly decide according to their votes on issues presented before them.
Climaco said she is happy to note that council members are supportive of her programs and even welcomed what she termed as “diverse voices” in the legislature.
“So far, the evaluation that they have is that majority are in support of our programs. But we really welcome diverse voices in the City Council because that is real democracy in action,” she said, adding: “There will be no more blanket authority of the mayor,” referring to the previous administration of Celso Lobregat.
“Our faith in God has led us to this moment, a reminder that we cannot allow ourselves to be dictated upon, no more blanket authority, but a real democracy in the Legislature. The time has come for us to value our mandate por causa de Dios solamente, este el deseo de maga votante, este el propio tiempo de Dios necesita kita uni y trabaja para el Ciudad de Zamboanga.”
“Ta pidi yo de ustedes ayuda na mi tercer termino para hace mas resiliente con el diatun Ciudad de Zamboanga,” Climaco told members of the City Council during its maiden session on July 9.
In 2008, City Councilor Jimmy Cabato passed a resolution granting blanket authority to then Mayor Celso Lobregat to fast track the creation of police auxiliaries in six pilot villages here.
Cabato, an ally of Lobregat, also passed other resolutions authorizing the mayor to look for available funds and accept donations from private sectors for the purchase of high-powered firearms which would then be distributed to police auxiliaries.
Lobregat, who ruled Zamboanga City as mayor and congressman for the past 20 years, lost terribly to Climaco in the May midterm elections. (Zamboanga Post)
Police set to file charges vs. man who faked kidnapping
POLICE ARE set to file charges against a man who staged his own kidnapping to extract ransom from his family in Zamboanga City.
Naguib Puyong demanded P1 million from his family, but he was nabbed by police agents last week at a branch of Palawan Express Padala in Zamboanga Sibugay province while collecting some P2,000 in medical money sent by his children.
Puyong was arrested after his family sought the help of the Anti-Kidnapping Group (AKG) of the Philippine National Police and set up a trap that led to his capture. During interrogation, Puyong admitted to have faked his own kidnapping.
Mayor Beng Climaco welcomed the filing of the case against Puyong, who is a resident of Barangay Licomo, stressing that the man should not be considered a victim, but a suspect and a perpetrator of the crime.
She thanked the police and the military, particularly the AKG, for their immediate efforts in responding to the incident.
Climaco also appealed to citizens to do away with situations that may cause alarm and scandal and put Zamboanga in a bad light.
“We appeal to residents, do not cause alarm and scandal to the people, we do not need that,” said the Mayor, who expressed dismay over the reported fake kidnapping which had caused undue alarm not only to the resident, but to the authorities as well.
“The authorities exhausted all means to investigate and to undertake rescue efforts only to find out that the incident was just a drama. Life may be very challenging and difficult, but please know that we have a government that is ready to help,” she said. (Zamboanga Post)
(Zamboanga Post)

SOME 450 new policemen were deployed to various assignments in Zamboanga City and for 6 months shall undergo a field training program, officials said
The policemen were part of 692 cops who recently graduated and belong to the Masiklab Classes of 2018- 01, according to Major Helen Galvez, a regional police spokeswoman.
She said 450 cops have been assigned to the Zamboanga City Police Office and 59 to Zamboanga Sibugay and 91 to Zamboanga del Sur and 92 were deployed to Zamboanga del Norte police offices.
She said Colonel Ronaldo Llanera, the Deputy Regional Director for Administration, led the send-off ceremony held at the regional police headquarters here recently.
“The 692 police trainees will be under the watch of Regional Special Training Units 9,” she said. “For six months, respective field training officers and senior police officers of Zamboanga City Police Office, Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga Sibugay, Zamboanga del Sur are expected to mold the new breed of police officers who will be exposed to actual police works in the field of patrol, investigation and other police works.”
