There is growing demand, both legislatively and ethically, for health and safety to be considered a priority within every organization. Safety Leadership Training Agenda
With a host of new challenges and responsibilities to tackle, supervisors need safety leadership training like never before. Learning how to supervise safety situations on a trial and error basis can lead to discouragement. This two‐day workshop will help you teach participants how to overcome many of the problems supervisors may encounter.
AGENDA | DAY ONE
Introduction and Course Overview You will spend the first part of the day getting to know participants and discussing what will take place during the workshop. Students will also have an opportunity to identify their personal learning objectives.
Adjusting to Your Role To begin, participants will learn some key strategies for new safety leaders. Then, they will discuss ways to ease the transition from employee to safety leader, and how to solve common problems.
A Safety Leader’s Responsibilities Next, participants will talk about their responsibilities to themselves, their employer, and their employees. Making Plans During this session, participants will learn how to use the urgent‐important matrix to plan and prioritize. Participants will also be given a framework for planning.
SMART goals for leaders This session will help participants set SMART goals.
Leadership Participants will look at different leadership models, including the Direction‐Support model.
The Situational Leadership Model During this session, participants will learn about Paul Hersey’s situational leadership model.
Synergy for a safe work environment This session will being looking at teamwork by exploring synergy: when the whole of the team is more than the sum of the parts.
Trust Next, participants will discuss why trust is so important in a team environment, and how to build trust for a better safety environment
Essential Communication Skills for Safety Leaders During this session, participants will discuss what communication is, what can be a barrier to communication, how to engage in active listening, and how to ask good questions to prevent hazards.
The Communication Process This session will give participants a three‐step model to use with employees who are agitated in some way (for example, excited, frustrated, or angry).

Orientation During this session, participants will rate their company’s orientation and develop ideas for improvement to bring back to their workplace.
Training Future safety leaders need to train others in the workplace. This session will give participants some guidelines for effective training as a trainer.

Defining a Safety Culture This session will explore the idea of a safety culture. Participants will also be asked to identify how safety applies to their organization.
Conducting a 360 Degree Safety Assessment It is essential to use a formal approach to analyze the current safety situation of your organization. A safety leader does not only use a check list to assess the safety situation, he looks at it as a way of life.
Getting Started in Your New Safety Leadership Role A good first safety step is establishing a safety committee. This session will give participants some ideas on getting started.
Identifying Hazards Hazard identification typically forms the basis for a safety plan. We will look at some ways of identifying hazards and then we will apply those methods to a case study.
Resolving Hazards Hazard resolution is the logical step to take after hazard identification. We will look at three ways of resolving hazards and then we will apply those methods to a case study.
Taking Proactive Measures There are measures you can take when hiring and training employees to make your workplace safer. This session will explore these measures through lecture and discussion.
Identifying Groups at Risk During this session, we will look at a number of factors that can increase a person’s risk of accident. We will also look at how to mitigate these risks.
Writing a Safety Plan Everything that we have discussed so far will come together to create a safety plan.
Implementing the Plan Your safety culture will only be a success if it is accepted and adopted by your employees. We will discuss just how to do this in a lecture.
Incident Management for Safety Leaders No matter how well your safety culture is implemented and accepted, there will still be incidents. This session will look at how to respond to, document, and investigate incidents. We will also discuss how to handle near misses.
Reviewing the Program The final essential component of your safety plan is to include a review process. We will look at when and how the plan should be evaluated.
Workshop Wrap‐Up At the end of the day, students will have an opportunity to ask questions and fill out an action plan.
