The MediaStar Pro system is capable of delivering up to 180 PAL and 200 NTSC channels of TV and AV sources through the CAT-5/UTP structured cabling infrastructure. The heart of the system is the MediaStar Adminstration software, a comprehensive management program which allows System Managers complete control of the MediaStar Pro system and the ability to determine the privileges and access rights accorded to individual users and groups. The MediaStar Administration software monitors and addresses the MediaStar Video Hub Chassis, the hardware switches which route the video and audio content to the appropriate end points on the system, in addition to managing the MediaStar Evolution IPTV elements of the solution as well. The MediaStar Administration software is the gatekeeper that ensures that only the appropriate content is delivered to specific authorised end users.

MediaStar keeps Betfair up to date Cabletime’s MediaStar Pro and Compact video distribution solutions are delivering a huge number of realtime TV channels at Betfair, the world’s leading online betting exchange, using the Cat-5e/6 cabling infrastructure at the company’s two UK offices.

Betfair is a registered bookmaker in the UK and operates a betting exchange. Through cutting-edge technology, the company matches bets between punters at prices punters set themselves. Betfair takes a small commission on net winnings. The company processes more than 300 bets per second during peak hours. Cabletime’s solutions were originally installed at Betfair’s headquarters in Hammersmith, and it was the success of this installation that prompted IS Manager Tony Rigby to specify MediaStar for the Stevenage office. The installation was managed by Carole-Ann Naylor, Betfair AV/TV Project Engineer, who heads up all TV/AV and VC for Betfair UK, She said: “We have been impressed by MediaStar since it was installed. Its ease of use and reliability are vital to us and we were keen to stick with the same system in our new office.”

Graeme Mayhew at Decibel Managed Systems, said: “MediaStar provides a rock solid, stable solution for Betfair. It does exactly what it promises to do, and is straightforward to operate as well as being totally reliable. Because Betfair builds its service around providing up to the minute sporting results, it needs a solution that it can totally depend on. MediaStar Pro also offers additional management software, so it gives Betfair a great deal of flexibility in using the system.” MediaStar Pro is a complete solution for professionally managed multi-channel video and audio delivery. Without impacting on the LAN, it offers 100/200 TV channel capacity, unlimited users, use of an existing Cat 5e/6/7/ infrastructure and total control of users viewing rights. MediaStar Compact is very flexible and easy to use, like its sister product, it also has zero impact on the LAN and offers 16 channel capacity, with up to 24 outlets per hub.

The installation at Betfair’s Stevenage office, follows on from two successful installations at the company’s London and Tasmanian offices, and was managed by systems integrator Decibel Managed Systems on behalf of Audio Visual Machines Ltd., (AVM Ltd). The original specification was dual MediaStar Compact solutions, which were able to deliver 32 channels made up of 16 channels on one and 16 on the other. This has been expanded using MediaStar Pro, which can provide up to 180 channels of live TV across the Cat-5e/6 cabling. Decibel has re-installed the Compact systems into the racks, so that Betfair can remotely control the satellite receivers, without the need to leave their desks and lose market management time.

Open University looks to the future with MediaStar The new Library at The Open University’s main campus headquarters in Milton Keynes had an eye on the demands of future technology when it recently deployed a MediaStar TV distribution and video conferencing system from Cabletime. With CAT 6e cabling already installed in the Walton Hall HQ, The Open University was looking for a solution that could deliver TV, video, presentations, video conferencing and radio across its network, and which could also offer the OU some degree of futureproofing as its requirements changed.

The Open University Library has meeting and presentation rooms as well as public areas and a cafeteria. The system needed to be flexible so that, for example, a group of students could be accessing one of the huge archive of OU programmes on DVD or video in a meeting room, whilst the reception area was displaying BBC News 24. In order to provide this flexibility, CTL installed two MediaStar hubs with 40 input sources, from which the OU can select channels including all the terrestrial stations, Sky and other digital and satellite channels. The signals are digital and satellite channels. The signals are being displayed on a range of output devices including projectors, LCD screens and plasma displays. Mary Hunt, Project Manager at the OU Library said: “Initially we used the system to display presentations, stream video or deliver news and we are now starting to use videoconferencing. We plan to use video over IP in the near future.”

The next stage for The Open University will be to add MediaStar Evolution, Cabletime’s latest addition to the MediaStar family. Evolution has been designed to take advantage of the developments in technology that allow efficient digital video delivery over IP based networks, and will broaden further the range of channels that the OU will be able to access. With installations throughout the world in banks and financial institutions, sports stadia and shopping malls, as well as other educational institutions the MediaStar pedigree has been long established. The only complete solution for professionally managed multi-channel video and audio delivery, MediaStar Pro offers zero LAN impact, 100/200 TV channel capacity, unlimited users, use of existing Cat5/6/7 infrastructure, total control of all users viewing rights, IP/RS232/RS485 control and SNMP monitoring and IR remote control.

As well as the TV distribution facility, the OU can also use MediaStar’s multipoint video conferencing facility which enables up to six people to meet at any one time, and allows students and lecturers to make face to face contact with other Open University sites.

MediaStar delivers real-time football action at Emirates Stadium Emirates Stadium is one of the most technologicallyadvanced sports venues in the world. The Press area of the stadium is equipped with 120 seats staged in pairs with a shared tabletop. On each table sits a single LCD display in a stainless steel casing. Live broadcast of the action on the pitch from an outside broadcaster such as Sky Sports was needed on the monitors to ensure that the Press attendees were receiving the live play as it happened, and were able to view the instant replays.

Systems integration specialist, Feltech and Cabletime, which has been behind live video distribution in a number of the UK’s leading sports stadiums, came to the rescue just weeks before the Emirates Stadium was due to open its doors to anxiously anticipating fans. Feltech supplied the 60 widescreen LCD monitors used on the Press Area tabletops, one Cabletime MediaStar Pro Hub and 60 MediaStar Pro Settop Receiver Units which ensure that live footage relayed by the outside broadcaster can be delivered in real time to the screens in the Press area without a single second of play being missed.

The system uses a single channel RF headend installed by Feltech, and the MediaStar Pro Hub by Cabletime receives the modulated feed from the outside broadcaster plug-in point. This is sent to the RF input of the Pro Hub which provides live service to the 120 press participants. MediaStar Pro Micro TV Settop Receiver Units connect directly to the display source, in this case the tabletop LCDs. The MediaStar Pro Micro TV Settop Receiver Unit connects to the front panel RJ45 sockets on the MediaStar Pro Hub via the stadium’s data cabling and allows interconnection at distances of up to 800 meters (2,600 ft) over CAT5/5e/6. The solution provided by Feltech and Cabletime’s MediaStar Pro allowed Emirates Stadium to provide its press attendees with the real-time football action necessary with minimal impact to the network and in a ‘plug and play’ manner that is robust and scalable.

However, despite the sophistication of the new TV infrastructure, there existed a delay in the sports action on the monitors so that when a goal was scored on the pitch, it would appear a few seconds later on screen via the distribution system. This was clearly an issue in areas where both the monitors and the action on the pitch could be seen at the same time.

MediaStar Pro

SIPI is an â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;openâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; standard interface that allows third party applications to control various functions of the MediaStar Pro and Evolution systems. The SIPI server is a software process that runs on the MediaStar System Controller. It is available only when the system has the appropriate license dongle entitlements. Control messages are sent from a third party control device (the client) to the SIPI server. The SIPI server receives and checks the messages and then issues appropriate internal instructions to the MediaStar Pro or Evolution systems. Once a command has been processed it returns appropriate messages to the client. The client is typically a software application running on a PC or a Crestron or similar control system. All control messages and responses are transmitted using a LAN based IPTCP communications link.
