THEORY

“a building should do two things, shelter us and speak to us, remind us where we are” Jhon Ruskin Urban buildings should connect intimately with the public by reflecting the environment’s activity. Continually interlinking the urban edge with that of the buildings edge. The Clinic for African Diseases has a very sensitive approach. It response to it’s environment, in its humble nature, providing solace for the sickly of Maputo. The design generators for this project was the distinctive architecture of Maputo and the use of materials, such as concrete.

DESIGN: SITUATED ON A STEEP HILL ON THE SOUTH WESTERN EDGE OF THE MDUNA’S PLOT SODWANA,KWAZULUNATAL.

WRITERS RETREAT FOR SOUTH AFRICAN NOVELIST

ONE IS MADE AWARE OF THE BUILDING BY ITS SIMPLE FORM CONTRASTING TO THE NATURAL FOLDS IN THE SUB-TROPICAL LANDSCAPE. CONTEXTUALLY IT BLENDS INTO THE SIMPLICITY OF FORM AND USE OF LOCALLY SOURCED MATERIALS. THE FUNCTIONALITY OF THE SPACES ARE BROKEN DOWN INTO THE THREE BASIC LEVELS OF LIVING: _WORK _EAT _SLEEP. THE LEVELS ALLOWS FOR INTERPLAY OF VOLUMES AND MORE INTIMATE SPACES.

CONCEPT:

IT IS DESIGNED AS A “LOCK UP AND GO” INHABITABLE SPACE. THE EXTERIOR FACADE OPENS AND CLOSES FROM THE INSIDE MAKING IT MORE SECURE. THE FACADE TREATMENTS ALLOW THE USER TO ENGAGE WITH THE LANDSCAPE ON EVERY VIEWING LEVEL.

FOR A WRITER IT IS VITAL TO DISCONNECT FROM THE REAL WORLD, AND BE ABLE TO JUST BE. THE BUILDING IS INTERPRETED AS A TOWER, A PLACE OF COMPLETE SOLITUDE.

MATERIALS:

A PLACE TO PAUSE _ LOOK OUT

THE MAIN CONSTRUCTION MATERIAL IS TIMBER. LOCALLY RESOURCED LAMINATED SALIGNA WAS USED FOR THE MAIN SUPPORT COLUMNS AND OREGON PINE PLYWOOD BOARDS USED FOR THE INTERIOR FINISH. IN-SITU CONCRETE PILES ELEVATE THE BUILDING STRUCTURE TO ALLOW FOR AIR MOVEMENT AND ENHANCE THE PRINCIPLE OF TOUCHING THE EARTH LIGHTLY.

SUSTAINABILITY: BEING “OF THE GRID” REQUIRES THE BUILDING TO ACT AS A HARVESTING MECHANISM. THE SMALL FOOTPRINT OF THE BUILDING ALLOWS FOR PLENTY OF AIR MOVEMENT AND PASSIVE HEATING. ALL WINDOWS AND DOORS HAVE A SECONDARY SKIN WHICH IS DESIGNED FOR SUN CONTROL AND SECURITY. RAIN WATER COLLECTED FROM THE ROOF IS STORED IN A TANK. A POND ‘REFLECTION POOL’ COLLECTS THE OVERFLOW IN THE RAINY SEASONS. A SOD ROOF IS PLACED ABOVE THE WRITING ROOM TO GIVE MORE INSULATION TO THE BUILDING. P.V-PANELS ARE PLACED ON ONE EDGE OF THE SOD ROOF, ENERGY GATHERED ARE STORED IN BATTERIES DURING QUIET MONTHS. GAS BOTTLES ARE USED IN THE KITCHEN OF THE STOVE, OVEN AND FRIDGE TO MINIMIZE THE ENERGY CONSUMPTION.
