01 Project title: Upcycling 3D Printing Institute Location: Ouseburn, Newcastle

Creative Synergies

Academic Year: 2020-2021 (Stage 3)

3

The studio’s brief focuses on the central question of what role the institution of education, and the spaces in which it takes place, can play in consolidating and mediating between the transient and established communities.

The 3D upcycling institute provides research facilities to the students and academic communities from Newcastle University and Northumbria University. The institute focuses on the research and production of sustainable materials for the 3D Printing industries. As a means to engage the institute with the established communities, creative practice from the Ouseburn valley is invited as consultants to help out with the design of the printed products. The printed art pieces include art installations and functional products such as medium-sized furniture. In addition, residents can constantly engage with the institute by collecting recycled plastics to produce raw materials for printing. My approach to the scheme is inspired by the three main bridges across the

Ouseburn Valley from the Newcastle City Centre to Byker. The bridge as a typology could be a useful tool to interconnect the institution with the existing and transient communities around the site parameters. My initial exploration focused on an urban scale that creates spatial links between the established institution and the different communities in the city, extending out into the deeper parts of Ouseburn and potentially to Byker to the east and Shieldfield to the North. The pedestrian bridge cuts through the building from the exoskeleton frame structures to the central concrete conical core, creating a physical and visual connection that interlinks the public and academic communities. Ouseburn Pavilion

The Ouseburn pavilion functions as exhibition space that takes the shape of a circular loop and a linear form. The main idea of the pavilion is to make circulation spaces into an alternative learning environment where people can walk through and learn at the same time. The pavilion provides opportunities for the local creative industries and local residents of Ouseburn to display their talented artwork and providing a platform for them to exchange their ideas.

The series of sketches and model show how I began to imagine how the institute extends out to reach deeper parts into Ouseburn and out to Shieldfield and Byker. I did a mapping of the different axis/vistas which are r elated to the context, including directional axis and historical paths. The different axis will help me decide the overall geometry of my design and influencing the circulation paths for the meeting points.

02 Project title: Railway Social Housing Location: Laurieston, Glasgow

Dwelling Plus

Academic Year: 2019-2020 ( Stage 2 )

15

The south part of Glasgow city in Tradeston, Laurieston and Kinning park was once densely populated with factories and tenements during the nineteenth-century expansion and regeneration scheme. Much of the urban fabric was cleared out during the 1960s to make way for multi-storey towers and slab blocks. However, the good intentions for total urban transformation and modernisation have caused social and environmental issues over the years. Many of these buildings have now been demolished to make way for smaller-scale apartments and residential units that serve the place better. The Dwelling plus phase of the Glasgow Economic Project involves designing a housing scheme containing at least six housing units and a public space. The site is uniquely located above an abandoned railway track. The main feature of my scheme involves turning the abandoned railway track into a bustling pedestrian walkway with social housing blocks. The unoccupied arches are also transformed into workshops and shops for the local communities to generate incomes.

Project title: Bishop Auckland Kiln Workshop Location: Bishop Auckland, North-East England

Exploring Experience

Academic Year: 2019-2020 ( Stage 2 )

20

Located in - between Darlington and Durham and sitting above the river Wear, Bishop Auckland is the largest town of the south of Durham. The town is a living palimpsest of British history. The main street, Newgate Street, runs along an original Roman Road, around which the town has been gradually developed. To explore the studio’s theme “Mirroring / Reflecting”, I began to rationalise the mimetic design process by studying some existing buildings on the site. The abundance of warehouses from the site inspired me to explore the warehouse typology regarding its materiality, structures, pattern and rhythms. My final design revolves around an interpretation of the conventional warehouse typology. The combination of the materials is distinctly separated into two-part. The heavy bottom is built using bricks, and a lightweight top part is cladded with metal sheets. The idea of separating material properties into heavy and light gave me a clear design direction for this project.
