Traditionally food growing is an inseparable part of human daily activity. Since industrialization begun to monopoly food production, and not forgetting to mention the fast speed of urbanization, food growing is set apart from urban environment. Through creating a parasitic and metabolic system of vertical ecological forest, the project aims to seek possibility of merging the food growing system with urban context, while revitalize the neighbourhood with new possibility of public common space. Chicken and wheat are believed to be most important food product in this eco forest system, in relation with Melbourne and Fitzroy food culture. As research shown Australian people are growingly most in favour of chicken meat over others. Melbourne and Fitzroy are renowned for its brunch culture, meaning that wheat products and eggs are crucial to the bakery products in every day’s life. The goal of the ecological forest is the co-existence of different types of food including wheat, chicken, and vegetables that can be beneficial and supplemental to growing chicken and wheat. This helps with increasing biodiversity of this system. The aim is to create an enclosed loop, even self-sustained system in this eco forest.

"WHAT is Urban Parasitism?" The main design concept of "Urban Parasitic" aims to transform some abandoned or underutilized spaces in the city. Through the research on spatial typology, the original spatial types are transformed into new spatial models through framing structures. The newly generated parasitic components will serve the surrounding neighbors as an organic public service space. This radial service space model will continue to develop and expand through its own iterative logic in the next 5-10 years.

"WHY & HOW does the structure develope in the urban space? " The entire structure will slowly develop in the city based on the pre-designed "ECO Urban Point" modular system in a cycle of 5-10 years. This development model can provide services to different communities and can be parasitic in the area. Use and obtain raw materials from other food production projects in Fitzroy to generate new benefits. After analyzing the new site, the system generates a new parasitic frame based on the required functions. This model can also be promoted in Melbourne and even globally.


Our food focus this semester has been on Eggs and Wheat. This is because these are considered to be some of the most basic and important foods for humans and therefore the staple products in our “Urban Vertical Forest” system. Melbourne and Fitzroy are renowned for its brunch culture where bread and eggs abound. We think that wheat products and eggs are then crucial to the consumption habits in our every day’s life. Our ambition is not only to create a food production system, but a close-loop eco-system as shown in the diagram. The main products are eggs, wheat, wheatgrass and spinach. Our secondary products include wheat grass green juice, beer as well as organic fertilizer made from chicken manure fermentation. We have designed a complete production industry chain and distribution chain to quickly deliver products to customers in surrounding areas by using an online order system with drone distribution. We are also trying to make use of the waste at every stage and recycle this, so we can create a self-sustained system, avoiding too much consumption of resources. Meanwhile, the project will collect grey water generated by the system itself and from each household in our neighbourhood to then be filtered and reused in our ecological food production system.

This ECO close-loop system is achieved by 8 centralised towers. These towers have different functions to work as a smart big machine, including growing of wheat, wheat grass, egg tower, pet tower, packaging, waste recycling, drone tower and educational visitor tower. These towers are connected by highlines to allow transportation of resources within towers, but also allow pedestrian access as new urban public communication spaces.

The top of the egg tower is to detect wheater of the day. If it is not rainy, chickens can get out from the chicken capsule and run around.

Feed is composed by wheat grain, spinach and watercress, which all of them are from the system itself.

All the chicken live in the chicken capsule, composed by waffled structure to be assembled on site, and inflatable membrane facade.

People can access to the tower by circualtion core in centre, or by the highline. It allow self pick-up of the eggs.

The lower part of the egg tower is connected to the houses, to make use of kitchen waste to feed chicken.

Incubators of eggs are located near ground level to allow people to observe the process of egg to chicken.

Chlorine gas is regularly used for sterilization to eliminate harmful microorganisms in water

Ornamental fish were fed with purified water, and the feces were recycled as fertilizer to grow wheat and wheat grass

The organic combination of wheat and spinach is used as the public space for the entrance, and the screen is used for environmental protection publicity

Mixer is to mix and blend material collected including wasted newspaapper, cupboard and watercress, to prepare for pulping.

It is to package and seal food, prepare for delivery. It is connected to other food production towers, to allow transportation within towers.

The wheat growing tower allows visitors access from the highline.

Hot-press Pulping to make egg trays and other packagings. The packaging process will be done on automatic packaging belt.

The drone tower is for drone landing and wireless charging. They are powered by solar panels.

The lower part of the package tower is connected to each household through pipes, and collect wasted paper for pulping.

The package tower makes use of waste collected from the house, and used watercress in the water purification system, for hot press pulping, for egg packaging.

The drones are powered by solar panels. There are two types of drones, one is for supervising, the other one is for delivery of goods.

When people on their way back to home from work, they can place order of the product from our system, including egg, spinach, beer and wheatgrass juice.

In recent years, environmental problems such as global warming and urban garbage have attracted public attention. The recycled clock can be used as an environmental protection landmark in the area to show the working logic and status of the system to the community through the clock and multimedia screen.

The system uses the latest replaceable filtration and sterilization system, through nano level layer by layer filtration and distillation sterilization, so that the recovered wastewater can be quantitatively divided into solid fertilizer and potable purified water.

The distillation system at the bottom speeds up the distillation through multistage distillation tanks and a cooling system with recyclable cold air, so as to meet the needs of the whole community. The exposed gear adheres to the idea of "building tell the truth", shows the structure to the community, and enables people to gain a sense of participation by making the community understand the logic of system operation

The purified organic solid residue is dried and chopped and converted into solid fertilizer for planting system.
