01 It’s through mistakes that you actually can grow. You have to get bad in order to get good.
Poster series Brochure Website
—Paula Scher
Year of Completion Fall 2015
Objective
Solution
For this project, students will find examples of vernacular communication within their environment. The student has to find a poorly designed ad outside and redesign the logo and make deliverables for that brand. In a two-part assignment, the students will first recreate the communication using the same materials as the original artists. In part two, the students will use the communication intent of the original piece and create a system of communications to serve this need. Every deliverable has to be consistent and be part of an aesthetic system.
In this project, my brand name is “Miscellaneous Store”. The store buys and sells new and old items for the household, such as furniture, appliances, housewares and so on. I created three headlines as the messages to attract the audience. I also designed a brochure with colorful layouts about everything on sale. Last is a website for the store. It might look simple but it contains a good amount of information for the audience when it comes to searching for what they need from “Miscellaneous Store”.

02 Good design is all about making other designers feel like idiots because that idea wasn’t theirs. —Frank Chimero
Year of Completion Fall 2016
Objective
Solution
For this project, brand your hometown and create an app or a web page, a secondary page and a tertiary page about it. Think of this as a tourist destination. What is great about your hometown? What do people do there? What makes it unique or different? Did something famous happen there? Did anyone famous come from there? Is there a beach, a forest, a mall that you can talk about? What is the history?
In Hanoi, there is no App that navigates the city’s public transit system with accurate real-time predictions. If we had that App, it would be very convenient for everyone who lives in Hanoi or even travelers. So, the Hanoi Transit App has been created to solve that problem and more. Hanoi Transit is your real-time urban travel companion. Navigate the city’s public transit system with accurate real-time predictions, simple trip planning, step-by-step navigation. Hanoi Transit also shows the favorite restaurants and interesting locations around you. I chose orange as the main color for this App because orange is the signature color of Hanoi’s buses.

03 There are three responses to a piece of design – yes, no, and WOW! Wow is the one to aim for. —Milton Glaser
Year of Completion Fall 2016
Objective
Solution
For this project, each one of us chose a poem written in an unknown language without any given translation. The idea was to use the poem’s letterforms as the basis for a series of drawings that could be approached with any tools available.
Extracting meaning from the poem wasn’t easy. Most of the information ended up being fillers I came up with based on projections, what I wanted to see. But words such as organic, thin and imperfect were the ones I observed from the letterforms. I knew the poem was Japanese, but I thought it would be more useful to ignore that and rather concentrate on what emanated from the form itself. I interpreted the initial poem based on the letterforms. I started to draw everything by using a special polish ink that I could imagine in my mind. I wanted to explore the idea of a strong and solid object that looked more interesting by having a story behind it.
The challenge was to translate any information that could come from the poem into a visual interpretation. The only thing that I identified at first glance was that the poem was in Japanese, but the meaning of the poem itself, was irrelevant. What mattered was the interpretation based on the form. The poem I worked with was “Summer of Konbu Candy” by Yosuke Tanaka.
Later on, we were given a translation of our poem. This could be used to enhance or transform the process, or it could also be meaningless, sticking to our first impressions, shapes, lines, rhythm, etc. I decided to use the translation to redirect what I had done at the beginning. Despite my having interpreted some things completely differently, there were some aspects of the poem that I was able to capture in my hand drawing experiments. In the end, I kept the spirit of what I did in the beginning to make the deliverable. My deliverable was a Japanese style book with the original Japanese poem and the abstract story that I created when I did this project.

04 A designer knows he has achieved perfection not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away. —Antoine de Saint-ExupÊry
Year of Completion Fall 2015
Objective
Solution
Redesign the San Francisco Climate Action Plan. Using elements of design and the provided content, create a well-designed document of three deliverables.
I started to brainstorm and wanted to make an interesting new book format. After reading the old Climate Action Plan for San Francisco, which is poorly designed and boring for readers, I decided to make a new book system based on the international style. I emphasized asymmetrical organization of the elements on a mathematically constructed grid and used sans-serif justified body text. I also combined the manipulated images with colorful infographics and information to have an impact on the audience. I also designed a website and mobile app for this project.

05 I strive for two things in design: simplicity and clarity. Great design is born of those two things. —Lindon Leader
Year of Completion Fall 2016
Objective
Solution
This project leads the student through specific steps in the design process to create engaging and relevant solutions. The student will propose a topic, identify its relevant audience and stakeholders, then find, create, and implement compelling visual elements in a variety of media that work together as a cohesive system.
Since the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965, the US has seen a new wave of Asian immigration emerge. Among the Eastern cultural values that the immigrants have carried with them, there is the longstanding preference toward boys/males. This mindset has to be changed. All kids should be born, raised and loved equally by their families. A baby girl is as precious as a baby boy, and should not be treated differently by her parents. From that idea, I create the GEOUS project, which means Gender Equality Organization of the United
States. I also made deliverables for the project, which are a poster series, website, event and game show. Overall, I hope it will help the Asian immigrant community in the US change the long-standing biased mindset that has been an influence through the generations. GEOUS intends to lessen the preference for boys and show families that a baby girl is just as precious. Through our deliverables, parents will discover the value of their daughters.
